Originally built in 1825 by Captain Bouer and named it after Baron Hendrik Merkus de Kock, Vice Governor of Dutch Indies, this fort was built on top of the hill to defend from the local inhabitants during the Padri Wars (1821-1837). There is not much left of the old fort but its a nice place to take a walk. Entrance fee is IDR 20,000 for foreigners. You can also walk across the Limpapeh Bridge to the zoo.

This blue not a fort at all but a depressing zoo housing exotic animals in tiny enclosures. Walked in and came straight back out again.
