We visited this place but not much info on history that you can get here. The buliding is a 3 storey building , There are ladies wearing mascots and requested monies after taking photo with them. Can try the traditional Minang Costume here at Rupiah 30K per person

For people who visit Padang & Bukittinggi, this Palace is a "must" stop location. It has been an icon for tourism here. It is indeed Majestic looking and i love the wood work of the Palace. Beautifully carved pillars and woven walls makes the history of this Palace more alive. Unfortunately not enough information provided in the Palace for an example, statues adorning beautiful traditional wears (but worn out) were put in one corner with no information plat or what so ever. The Palace also are not well lit. It was dark and gloomy and not much to do besides trying the traditional wears and taking picture in it (chargeable). Wish more information narative plat will be provided in the future for visitors to understand this Palace's history more.

istano basa pagaruyuang is a traditional replica historic house for the Minangkabau tribe located in Batu Sangkar, Kabupaten Tanah Datar, Padang West Sumatra, because this palace was burned during the riots of 1804 and there was a fire back in 2007 due to lightning strikes. Then the palace was renovated by spending 20 billion. Inside this palace there are many historic relics ranging from statues of heroes to cooking utensils in ancient times. Here we can also rent traditional wedding clothes Minangkabau typical with a price of 30,000-35,000. This place is very good for holidays with family and can add knowledge about minangkabau culture, it's just access road to istano basa pagaruyuang is quite far and there is a sharp bend.

It is located in Pagaruyung, a traditional castle made of woods. Unique, with all carving details and traditional cloth. Here we can take a photo shoot wearing west Sumatra traditional attires.

If you like culture and history then you should visit this site. A flagship of Minangkabau, it used to be the palace and the Seat of The Crown. Now it's converted into museum, Pagaruyung Palace is open for public. You can explore this all-wood palace and see how royal family used to enjoy. Don't forget to remove your shoes before you enter the palace gate.
Food stalls and merchandises are available to buy. Typically you can negotiate the price, especially if you buy a lot of it. A gudie service is available for a price. Avoid weekend and holidays as it become very crowded. Visit in the morning or afternoon for better experience.

Fabulous!! Make sure to take a horse cart from the market in Batu Sangkar to this location. They will dress you up in local costume when you get there, just leave a tip.

Pagaruyung Palace, also known as "Minangkabau Istano Basa Pagaruyuang" is the royal palace of the former Pagaruyung Kingdom, located in Batusangkar town, West Sumatra. Built in the traditional Minangkabau architectural style, it is a three stories structure. It has 72 pillers and horn like curved roof. It has been furnished with antique furniture and artiffects. The Palace has been built on raised platform. Underneath space is used to keep their cattle and cattle food. The floor space is in split level. Raised level was used for guests who will sit facing the entrance, and keeping their back to the bedrooms build at the end of the raised platform. See pictures.
Today, no royal family resides in this palace. It is now a museum and popular tourist attraction. There is a rice barn, a big horse, and gardens in the palace complex. You can rent a typical Minangkabau dress for your memorable picture. A must visit for unique experience.

Pagaruyung palace is an icon for West Sumatrans as this is the original and historical remains of the West Sumatrans kingdom and cultural image. You can take photos here wearing the famous Minang colorful dress both for men and women. And for the ladies, you can also try wearing the famous Minang head ornaments which are an identity for the west sumatrans women. The pagaruyung is also a reflection of the west sumatrans "rumah gadang" or big house, where in the old days all families and relatives stay at this big house that would typically have many bed rooms which each bed room usually accommodate different families.
