- VishtronHouston, Texas23 contributionsCamping - could've been better.Percha dam has probably seen better days and the ongoing drought isint helping. The campsites are in a pebble filled cul-de sac that backs into a field of chiles, Little pergolas are provided at each campsite with a table beneath them for shade. We set up our tent behind the structure and had a peaceful nights sleep ... or would have if not for the loud and obnoxious "neighbor" trying to set up camp at 11. Whats usually a 10 minute affair, turned into an hour long duel with an obviously inebriated patriarch yelling at the kids with unclear instructions. Our quiet tent turned into a nightclub with flashlights being aimed (not really) around at a dizzying pace. To make matters worse the restrooms were full of bugs and flies and only one was open. The showers were a boon and is what gives it 3 stars. The tent sites did seem more isolated and calmer and the camp hosts/rangers seemed like nice folks.Visited September 2021Written September 7, 2021
- nc w3 contributionsBad management, old and dumpy, weekends a noisy crowded locals park, good birdingOld dumpy park superficially maintained- restrooms were just painted but handicap showers don't work, funky pit toilets often don't have toilet paper but do have black widows- look before you sit. Weekends are noisy and crowded with large local families. Current camp host partied at a campsite that I asked to tone things down a bit after 11pm, he used many expletives and screamed at me to leave. Rangers condone this, are unprofessional and drive past you if you try to waive them down in pickups with blacked out windows, like wannabe feds. Funny, considering they only patrol two small parks where nothing much happens- contrast that with Elephant Butte Lake State Park, where the rangers who deal with real stuff roll down their windows to say "hi." The good: this past weekend I saw a painted bunting, summer tanagers, orioles (Bullocks?), sandhill cranes, to name a few. If you can tolerate the humans, the birding almost makes it worthwhile.Visited July 2023Traveled soloWritten July 9, 2023
- VWells196046 contributionsPercha Dam State ParkWell, turned out Leasburg State Park was full up and overflowing. Caballo Lake Campground across the way was almost full, and so Percha Dam State Park it was. Nice campsites with covered pads and picnic tables. Plenty of electrical hookups for $14 a day. Lots of Basic tent sites with just picnic tables down below, closer to the Rio Grande River. A major plus was the nice hot showers and flush toilets in the main campground area. End of the campground loop towards the south abuts an agricultural operation, and the weekend we were there the smell of cow fertilizer was VERY strong. Also, Ranger ? the guy who went around and made sure you had paid your fee for the night before is either a former cop/military guy, and I warn you, you will not get a smile out of him. Otherwise, things were fine. The weather was great, and the Rio Grand, although diminished greatly, was nice to see. Would stay again.Visited February 2015Traveled with friendsWritten February 26, 2015
- rick n1 contributionNot a good place to be, especially to spend two weeksWas here before COVID, here right now, this place has ha no work or upkeep since then. In fact we were here on the day we were kicked out for COVID on Friday mar 13. We were talking about what a good job they had done during the previous winter, especially with controlling the goat heads, if you have a dog , you know what I am talking about. Bath rooms still not open, excuse in all parks is that they can’t find anyone to clean them daily. COVID is the excuse for that. Probably a good one, Used to be a nice place, don’t think I’ll be back.Visited March 2021Written March 21, 2021
- Jan RLas Cruces, New Mexico49 contributionsOur favorite local campgroundI love this state park! We live in Las Cruces and come up here often. We have an RV camper trailer and the sites are very well maintained! Some sites have a grill and some sites have a pit. All have water and electricity on the upper level. So there is tent camping as well closer to the river. The bird watching here is amazing. Bullocks orioles, vermillion flycatchers, western tanagers, red winged blackbirds, green herons, sandhill cranes and great blue herons just to name a few. There is excellent fishing for trout and walleye pike at the nearby lakes and you can fish on the river also. There are places to hike and ride your bikes in the area as well. The only drawback would be that fires are not allowed right now, but propane grills and fire pits are allowed.Visited July 2022Written July 6, 2022

- Mamabadger5653 contributionsUnexpectedly Good Birding SpotPercha Dam State Park is a small park mostly devoted to camping. We heard it recommended for bird sightings, and stopped by. The campground was mostly uninteresting, although we did spot a Black Phoebe near the dam. The trail through the adjoining woods, accessible by crossing the metal footbridge, is must better. Hepatic Tanager, Lesser Goldfinch, and much more was seen easily over the course of an hour or so. It seems to be the best birding spot among the state parks in the Truth or Consequences area - we visited several.Visited May 2014Traveled as a coupleWritten June 1, 2014

- M JAustin, Texas7,990 contributionsNice place for a picnic. Rio Grande River and dam.My husband and I went Perch Dam state park on a Tuesday morning. The park is about 2 miles off I-25. A gravel road started at the park entrance. The visitor’s center was close so we paid the park fee at the self-pay station. The picnic area is along the Rio Grande River and the Dam is on the west end of the picnic area. We had a picnic lunch close to the dam. The one room outhouse restroom (for men & women) was stinky and had no toilet paper. The Rio Grande River was flowing very good the last weekend in June. The camping site looked nice but no views of the river.Visited June 2017Traveled as a coupleWritten July 19, 2017
