Animals are starving and/or suffering from injuries which seem obviously having not been cured since a long time. That's very sad to see animals used like this for tourism and money but neglicted this way. I will never go back in this zoo and will invite all my friends and families boycotting this crual and unrespectfull place.

To anyone considering going to this zoo I highly recommend you do not go . For the animals being as well as yours. This place truly is not considered a fun place to attend with others if anything it’s miserable and upsetting . Firstly , I’d like to bring up the fact that this place looks disgusting . This zoo is absolutely filthy , and there is litter everywhere. Making this place not so pleasant nor hygienic. This place is also known to have quite a bad smell. The animals are treated horribly and you could definitely consider it as abuse as well as neglect. So many of the animals are in such a bad state , and it's to the point where you can even see their ribs. Their enclosures are not maintained at all and the animals look stressed and unhappy . More and more animals are dying each day due to their awful living conditions . Please help ban this place by spreading awareness. I highly suggest you attend a true animal sanctuary with high reviews to ensure these animals are living good lives.
Please search up this zoo and go on the images . What you will find is horrifying . They do call this place the "zoo of death" for a reason afterall.

I should clarify that my trip only included a photo stop at the shark and crocodile statue in front of the zoo. I was on a cruise, and it is entirely possible that the cruise‘s excursion director just did a horrible job of scouting what tourist attractions exist in Surabaya. The Indonesian people are very friendly, and Surabaya seemed to be a much more upscale city than Jakarta or Semarang, but my advice would be to entirely skip a city tour of Surabaya, and spend your time at what seemed like a nice Zoo, seeing the Komodo dragons, Javan tiger, etc., which unfortunately were not included as part of on my cruise’s shore excursion. I‘m sorry if sound disparaging, but I cannot imagine anyone enjoying a city tour that included a Chinatown, which was the least Chinatown-like and most boring of any of the several that I have visited in five counties and several cities, a totally-unimpressive newspaper office who major attraction turned out to be it restrooms, an almost entirely-empty one room of a former Chinese home, an independence Square that had an obelisk: period, and a visit to the local mayor’s office (sans mayor). Many in from my cruise were saying they planned to demand a refund for this tour. I strongly recommend that you take my advice and simply take a taxi to the zoo and visit it instead. It appeared to be a much, much better use of your time. Even a photo of the the vey nice shark and crocodile statue at the Zoo, followed a taxi back to this would have be been preferable. I have visited 56 counties on six continents, and that’s what I recommend for Surabaya. Sorry to be so cynical. Indonesia is a relatively new nation and has yet to build or develop the tourist industry in Surabaya.

For starters , this place has been named the “Zoo of Death”, that alone should be enough to imply what type of environment you’ll be stepping into once attending this zoo. I do NOT and emphasize DO NOT recommend ANYONE to go to this zoo! The hygienic quality of the sanctuaries at the zoo were filthy and disgusting. Not to mention the HORRID conditions of their animals there, they looked starved to the bone and nearly half dead for goodness sake. It was truly a miserable and unnerving experience and not something you should bring you or your family to experience. This place needs to be shut down.

This zoo is disgusting. It does not look after its animals well and should be shut down by the government and the animals placed in sanctuaries to recover from their trauma.
The place was so dirty with rubbish littering everywhere. And please, try to avoid visiting the toilet. The animal enclosures are very small and badly kept.
The elephants are very sad and the one that they take Perot rides on every day, all day is tired and ill. She should be retired immediately.

Me and my boyfried visited this zoo whilst in Surabaya for a day waiting for a flight. We had read some of the reviews featured on here but decided to take a look for ourselves as there is little else to do in the City.
We paid 15.000rp to enter, (little more than £1). My expectations after reading the reviews had not been high, however the state of the animals and their enclosures was absolutely appalling. Monkeys were kept in tiny cages, alone and with barely any trees or ropes to climb, there was an extremely ill and neglected looking bear who was pacing up and down his rusty enclosure which almost brought me to tears. There is almost every kind of animal you can imagine being abused in this 'tourist attraction', including endangered species like jaguars and orangutans. There was rubbish everywhere, including the animal enclosures and the place looked derelict and run down. I would not recommend giving your money to these people or supporting it in any way. We were both extremely shocked and upset by what we saw today. Shame on the zoo keepers for not caring about the welfare of these poor animals. If I could rate it 0 then I would.

Go to this zoo expecting to see something of Western Tourist attraction standard and you will be bitterly disappointed.
This is a big zoo but there seems to be absolutely nothing invested in maintenance or housekeeping. There seemed to be rubbish everywhere. This is a shame as there is very little else to see or do in Surabaya.
The 'aquarium' area had holes in the roof, and the glass in the fish tanks that wasn't broken (and replaced with parcel tape, or boarded over) was so old that you could barely see through it.
Many animals were housed inappropriately : For example, a tiger in a cage so small that it can only walk 3 paces before it has to turn around... dozens of pelicans in a very small and smelly cage. A bear sitting and rocking unhappily back and forth in its small enclosure.
To be fair, the previous reviewers are not being objective by posting photos from the tabloid press a few years ago of a wounded bear. However, it has to be said that the animals generally give the impression that they are very, very unhappy indeed.
There are many vendors here trying to sell you photos of your family with (photoshopped-on) happy-looking animals, or animals which aren't even here, or cartoon animals. Kind of missing the point I think !
We also saw Zoo staff charging people to have their photo taken with a posed young orangutan. This is a wild animal, so I can only assume that it had to have been tranquilized to allow itself to be used in this way without objecting. To anyone from a civilized country, this is cruel and unacceptable.
We experienced a torrential downpour of rain while we were here, and the pedestrian pathways throughout whole place became flooded and inaccessible. Even the toilets were flooded with 6 inches of smelly rainwater. There is also a complete lack of rain shelters.
With a bit of investment and some proper spacious animal habitats and care, this could be a world-class tourist attraction. However, at the moment it only serves as an example of everything that a zoo should NOT be.

This is the worst you that i've ever been to. I was looking for a nice morning walk around some animal sanctuaries, just to find ill looking animals in a very dirty pen. The animals are sick and very malnourished. Thank god the government closed it down, for the animal's sake.

In hope my admission ticket money goes to the well-being of the animals I visit them more than once. Although it is just very depressing seeing skinny sick-like animals throughout the zoo. The pungent smell goes throughout the zoo and the animals look so sad being there. It is not a good experience at all to see animals just waiting for their death. I hope the managers of this place can use the money they get from the zoo to actually take care of the animals and not corrupt it. It is just so cruel.

NO - I don't want to know anymore about how this 'attraction' exemplifies the lack of empathy and intelligence of your country's people and government officials who played a part in this travesty.

I want to know why this zoo is still open to torture these animals and traumatize visitors who are uninformed of your government and its people's lack of humanity and empathy.

Hi, how can you think this is a place worth to visit?
I read from social media that this zoo is a Horror zoo for animals. I have seen awfull pictures about a small elephant baby in chains, a monkey in a short cahins, a tiger so tiny that it looks like it never got food etc. It looks a place like any tourists should not visit ever!

I just went to this zoo and feel like I am scarred for life. Why is anyone supporting it and why isn't it shut down. I should have researched but the concierge at the zoo made it sound great and we went on a whim. A bengal tiger with every single vertebrae sticking out of it's back is just the cruelest thing you will ever see. For anyone wanting to come here because of the price....I did the same and I am seriously mentally scarred. Don't do this and don't do this to your children. It should be closed. One would think that starving endangered animals should be flagged but I guess Tripadvisor doesn't care. WWF? WTF? Please, please please don't support this zoo. I wish I had never stepped foot in it.
