For those who prefer sights off the beaten track in Surakarta/Solo, this mausoleum complex of the Suharto family can be on your list. I visited Astana Giribangun after touring the mountain temples Cetho and Sukuh and the tea plantations in Karanganyar. The Astana is the final resting place of the late Indonesian President Suharto. Apparently, not a lot of tourists go there and the staff were quite impressed and amazed of my interest to visit the place. There were a few Suharto loyalists -- for want of a better word -- when I got there. The place is very quiet. One has to wait outside the mausoleum for one's turn to enter the mausoleum. The staff are nice and they answer questions politely. They also asked me questions in return as they very seldom have tourists visiting the place. No picture taking inside using personal cameras. However, should one need to immortalize one's visit, there is an official photographer to take one's picture for Rp20,000.00. There is also a small souvenir shop at the entrance. No entrance fee.

Truthfully, other than the mausoleum itself, there is not much else to see there. But the place offered a cool and serene respite from the hot temple and tea plantation tours I did in Karanganyar.

This place is the mausoleum of Suharto. Located in Karang Anyar Regency, about 10 minutes drive from main road Solo to Tawangmangu. It is in the up hill sorrounded by trees plantation. There was no entrance fee but we have to register at reception to get the entry permit. The mousoleum has Javanese style building and in the main building there were 5 cemeteries.

We paid a visit to Astana Giribangun with 16 participants, it was 2 hours drive from Solo City. This is private grave yard of the 2nd president of Indonesia "Soeharto". The location in big area while building is Javanese architecture style with luxurius "Big Pendopo", located in up at the hill, that's why the weather is nice, the place also cleaned & well maintained, and no entrance fee at all, proper Mosque also available, and there is small souvenir shop. To Indonesian this is worth place to be visited. Thank you & GBu

The location is outside solo city, to the east. It is a big area on a hill used as a private grave yard of the 2nd president of Indonesia, "Soeharto". It became a pilgrimage place for local. Soeharto family was famous with corruption scandal. You can still see it after the death. The main building is a big luxurious "Pendopo" (javanese architecture style), all wood carving on the wall. First, when you arrive, you have to announce yourself by a small office downstair and you have to pay the entrance fee. You will get a piece of paper to enter the area. When you're inside you come to the main building, and you were asked to fill the guest book and....... yes.... they asked us money again. They will open the beautiful door to go in the room with some grave stones. This is the mausoleum of Soeharto, his wife and some other close family. For tourist from abroad, it's not worth visit.
