There's still no change of the display since my last visit years...... ago. A big collection of the Javanese " ancient things" with history but it's poorly manage and dusty. It needs re-construction, re-arrangement and re-management. With the situation like now, it's not really attractive for people who want to visit and seeing the collection. I understand that so many people will be involved by the changing of it. This museum needs volunteers who can help run the museum.

This museum is located in the heart of Solo, the famous cultural city in Central Java, Indonesia.
In this museum we can find clothings, weapons, wayangs (traditional puppets), plates, documents from ancient times owned and used by the king of Surakarta (Solo).

I went there at the end of 2017 taking some pictures since I'm interested in something related to java culture. There's no need to pay for the entrance. All you have to do is fill out the guest book. Camera flash is not allowed taking picture in museum.

I agree with Randy Nasution's review,
The collection is good but they didn't maintained it well enough.. dust everywhere, and low lights.
One good thing for me, they had library (not every museum had library about their colections) and the knowledge of the librarian is good.

Just to be clear, when I gave the poor rating its not for the collection of the museum but its for the management team (whoever they are ) for the museum.
Dust are everywhere and I even see 2 cats walking inside the room.
My son is very frustrated when he want learn about the collection because the information is very minimum.
Its very sad to see the precious collection waste like that.

The stories of people / cultures/ way of life of central java depicted by exhibition here are very interesting ; however, it needs much improvement to attract tourists , even locals to explore this edutainment center.

This was my first visit to the museum. A young guide (Priska) provided a quick overview of the museum. My intention was to learn a bit more of the Javanese history. But I soon realized I'd better buy a good book to get relevant information on the history: The expositions are fragments that are not presented within a historically understandable context that most people like me (interested, but not well informed about the history of Java) would need to comprehend the most important milestones of the history. The total presentation is not appealing as one can see from some photos I uploaded here. A yet-unidentified object stored with broom and other cleaning utensils, for instance. This place does have potential to become a lot better in presenting history in a more interesting way.
I am giving two stars for its excellent location on Slamet Riyadi and its collection of various exhibits. One highlight to me was the Gamelan Organ designed and made in Surakarta

Contrary to other reviews, we would say it is an interesting little museum, located close to the Batik 's museum Danar Hadi. Hire a guide at the entrance and it will make a major difference: aside form local arms ,dishes etc from the local royalties you will also see a unique gamelan with foot pedals and the famous gifts from Napoeleon ....Worth it. Beware it closes early at around 2pm.

This museum (i have to admit) has good collections, yet the museum surely need serious maintenance and restoration.
The security of this place should be an important concern.
So sad to see the condition of the museum. the place (i believe) a great place to visit and one of the great tourist destinations in Solo.
