Visited this place as I was coming from Wonosobo to Semarang. The place is a minerals mining site used for construction of buildings. You can walk around a bit, just don't be that person with the selfie stick, etc... that gets run over by a mining truck. It's not dangerous at all, one just needs to be aware of their surroundings. Next door is a garbage dump site where they burn all the waste. Don't stay downwind of that more than absolutely necessary given the fumes are carcinogenic.

It was nice experience while visiting Indonesian Brown Canyon on our motorbike / scooter. We have came there late afternoon so we had nice romantic colors on the sky. The canyon itself it is nothing special too see, I would not recommend it to the tourists, but we were students that time and had a lot of time and for those you should visit it. However, inside this natural canyon or really close to it, there is a huge, really huge dumping trash center where they are burning all the trashes. The plastic burning trashes are even bigger that the canyon itself. It's like horror movie and with all black smoke, which comes from the plastic, it looks like the end is near, the apocalypse is here.
