We were there for a Family New Years 2020 getaway Java Roadtrip.

We hired a Jeep service that will take you to see the Sunrise, the Crater and other Tourism spot at the National Park. The Jeep Tour service will cost you around Rp 1.3-1.5 Millions but I’m suggesting you to rent a guest House nearby so it’s easier and closer. And there will be Ojek to take you to the Sunrise spot just in case the Jeep won’t be able to take you to the exact spot since there will be no parking for them, it will cost you Rp 40k Roundtrip.

You’ll find tons of Local Food and local Souvenirs around the Tourism spot and of course I had to have Bakso Malang.

Overall,
It was breathtaking beautifully dangerous but it wasn’t cold enough. I should wear short pant and T-shirt with my Hiking Boots. But don’t miss the Crater since you’re in Bromo!

Finally made it to Bromo!

We skipped the sunrise coz we have a boy 7yo.. so only went to 3 spots the crater, whisper sand, n teletubbies..

Started from Malang, we book a tour from Irham 85649100851.. got the driver picked us up at hotel w Toyota Innova, going up through Pasuruan.. took about 2hrs to get to Wonokitri, the spot where jeep driver awaits.. very good driver good service nice car good drivong skill..

Then going to the spots via Jeep.. seems like depends on our luck to get good driver (different person w the one picked us at hotel).. if you’re lucky you get the driver wwith good driving skill (coz the road so tricky and steep!), he knows good spots to take pics instead of the normal full people ones..

1st place to visit of course the crater.. from the parking spot in the bromo area, quite far, then after that you have to climb up the steps to get to the crater.. about 100 steps? Not really that far but still need some energy to go up.. so suggest to take horse from the parking spot to the steps.. we got 150k per person per horse going from parking spot to the steps and back.. bargain from 175k.. not sure if it is good bargain etc but just consider helping those guys lah..

Tips when you go up to the crater, people tends to stay at the closest from the steps.. coz probably dont have energy to go further.. :) but if you can, go to more empty spots at far left or right..

2nd spot is the whispering sands.. not so special not much to see.. just the cloud looks like touching the ground.. if you take pics, suggest to go to more empty spot, not the crowded one..

3rd spot is the savannah or teletubbies hills.. beautiful landscape, can take horse to go around and take pics.. 100k per horse..

What else.. if you want to save up, could drive yourself up to wonokitri, there is a parking lot there, soon after you arrived jeep drivers coordinator will approach you and offer their service..

Have fun!

Took the jeep up but missed the sunrise because there was a huge jam going up the volcano.

After you exit the jeep, you can choose to take a pony (IDR100,000) or walk up (free). All of us chose to take the pony because it was cheap. In fact we paid IDR150,000 because our jeep driver told us it was the holiday season but IDR100,000 is the normal price.

My pony seemed to hate the owner and was quite unstable. I almost fell off a few times, so the experience was not that enjoyable for me. My friends had no problem with their horses.

After getting down the horse, you still have to climb a flight of stairs to get to the volcanic crater. Volcanic crater is similar to the ijen one without the water part.

Stay close to the railings and please do not try to be a hero. I had a friend who tried to walk 1 round circling the crater and fell inside. When we asked the driver for emergency help, there was none since there were no guides or anything around. We had to rely on the flower sellers and locals for help to get the guy out.

30 Aug 2019.
The road to this mountain is challenging, but that is the worthy experience. Riding horse and go to the top to see the beautiful scenery are the activities you must do if you come here.
After leaving this place, the memories won't be forgotten for a long time..

The hunt for the rising sun was the main thing I was looking for when I ventured to climb Mount Bromo in the east of this island of Java. When the night began to turn into, slowly but surely, it really fascinated and captivated me, although what I have to go through is quite a heavy climb to watch this sunrise. but in my opinion it is very feasible, the beauty of the mountain on the island of east Java is able to captivate anyone who visits it. In Mount Bromo, East Java, there are interesting places that I can explore to get the sensation of private sun hunting, I really like the view from the very quiet Penanjakan 2 hill which became my choice to get more privacy.

A visit to Bromo is pretty much mandatory for anyone visiting East Java. Being able to stand on the rim of an active volcano and witness close up the power of the earth is an experience it's hard to put into words.

However, your trip to Bromo involves so much more, and not a lot of it is fun.

Firstly, you'll most likely be paying someone to drive you up, at a pretty steep price. Then you have to pay to enter the so-called 'National Park'. And then you need to park up and pay another high fee to be taken on a four stop 4WD Jeep route along with a ton of other tourists.

The viewpoint is the first stop, and if you go for sunrise be prepared to be disappointed if you dislike crowds (I mean crowds) and maybe even unable to see it due to too many people. The view down to the crater, Semeru and Cemoro Lawang is stunning though, and worth making the trip alone.

You'll then go down to the the crater and be parked up strategically 1km from the steps up to the rim. This is to allow the horsemen to make more money out of you. I chose to walk to the rim, which is a pretty dusty experience, so a face mask is recommended.

Once you reach the rim, you'll forget all about the corruption and just be blown away. Depending on wind conditions and volcanic activity, you may actually be banned from getting close to Bromo, so it's a good idea to check ahead with tour agencies or online.

The Jeep then takes you across the black ash to a small and disappointing green mountain (Teletubbies Hill), and then stops again in the middle of the 'sea of sand', close to some cool volcanic rock formations. Selfie stick paradise for many I'm afraid...

I should point out I've been to Bromo before, and back then you were able to drive your own car up to the temple below the crater, as well as park by the viewpoints. Today it's all about making money and filling pockets, and with corruption at an all-time high in Indonesia, this trip left me feeling ripped off, and you only have to look around to see none of the money you're forced to hand over is put back into making the park cleaner or better for tourism.

Bring my kids (10, 9, 5) for adventure! Here is the itin
Day 1:
Arrive in Malang, pickup arranged. Lunch at Restaurant Inggil, Museum Tempo Doeloe. Good food.
Malang - Bromo, about 4 hours on Sat. There is traffic jam here and there.
Arrive there at 7pm, check in at Cemara Indah Hotel. Dark aldy. This hotel and Lava View have direct view to Bromo. Early sleep.
Day 2:
Wakeup call at 2.30am. Ride on our Jeep old Land Cruiser. Sunrise is at 5.30 but need to go early or else your jeep will be parked far from viewing point. It is not hiking, but walking up to Penanjakan viewpoint can be exhaustive. Many people and some of them are smoking, we can't take it. So we move to Bukit King Kong. Less people and still can see Bromo clearly. Visit the other places around there. Back to hotel, rest and checkout. Bromo - Malang by Avanza is 3 hours. But if u ride the Jeep, there is other way which only takes 1.5 hours. Wish I know that earlier. Arrive in Batu, main target is Jatimpark, so we stay at Pohon Inn. Choose the deluxe room which facing the zoo. The view is wow!
Day 3:
Buy Paket Sakti for Rp300k, can visit all 8 parks in 2 days. We decided to be just free and easy. Only visit Eco Green Park (must) and Museum Satwa (must). Museum Angkut is a must-must!
Day 4:
Batu Secret Zoo (must). Check out after lunch. Goto Malang, one hour only. Dinner at Depot Gang Jangkrik. Yummy!
Check in at Harris Malang. Very nice for kids!
Day 5:
Swim and play at Dino Kids. Fly home!

My second trip after the first one in July 2017. The first trip was with a group of friend and colleagues basically to verify the suitability of bringing my wife and 2 teenage daughters.

The view and scenery are worth the long journey taken from any nearby city ie Surabaya or Malang.

While the scenery is worth the long journey, the trip may not suitable for the old age and kids under 9 years old, anyway you must observe the time spend, physical fitness and logistics arrangement.

First - Logistics
1. Your should arrange the transportation from either Surabaya or Malang.
2. While Surabaya is more accessible by many flights option, Malang is an alternative which offers you many authentic East Javanese culture and the small city is cooler than Surabaya.
3. Approximately 2.5 to 3 hours needed yo reach from the above city to the Bromo
4. To reach penanjakan for the sunrise view it is advisable to allow around 2.5 - 3 hours traveling time between Malang or Surabaya to get to the foothills.
5. The foothills will be the interchange for the 4 wheels (old but powerful Toyota Land Cruiser).
6. The distance between the foothills and the viewing peak is approximately 40km and you have the option to view the sunrise from penanjakan, Bukit Cinta or King Kong Hill.

Secondly is the attire

Since the temperature is lower than 10 degree Celsius up there and dusty and sandy path leading to Bromo, it is advisable to wear jeans, bring along jacket to protect you from the chilling wind especially during summer time. I would recommend you to wear comfortable sports shoes and it should be your second pair shoes dedicated for this, the fine sands will seep into your eyes, ears and your shoes will get extremely dirty with sands. So by having additional spare shoes is advisable.

The total journey will take around 12 hours from starting point at Malang/Surabaya until you return back to either of the above city.
1. Sby/Mlg - PERTAMINA gas station Sukapura : 2.5 hours
2. PERTAMINA gas station - penanjakan 40 km : 2 hours
3. Viewing sunrise, Bromo tour will took around 3 - 4 hours.
4. Return trip will be like item 1 and 2.

While the infrastructure may not support the crowds, your sufficient preparation will ensure you enjoy the scenery.
