Beautiful place but clearly shaking under the weight of tourism
Visited bromo national park as part of a larger tour of eastern Java with my wife on the 28/3/2024x We did what is the quintessential tour of bromo - a private jeep took us from Cemoro Lawang to a viewpoint (there are several) on adjacent Gunung Penanjakan for sunrise. Then shortly after that we drove back down and did a 45 minute walk to the bromo crater across the so called ‘sea of sand’. In terms of the attraction itself I don’t really have any complaints. The views of the 4 volcanos were stunning and I quite enjoyed the walk across the sea of sand - particularly in the morning when it was covered in a low layer of cloud. The main issue with this attraction is the intensity of tourism. There is a single double lane road leading up to the viewpoint and virtually all tours follow the same itinerary and timing. I believe they usually go in the mornings as the views are unlikely to be obscured by cloud then later in the day. I have read however that during dry season this isn’t a significant issue so there may some benefit in going later. Problem was that with so many jeeps on the mountain the viewpoints become horribly crowded. We had this in March and I found it quite stressful trying to navigate the crowds and hold my space on the viewpoint. The clientele seems to be predominantly Chinese tourists and they can be pushy. Our guide tried to get around this by starting our tour at 0230. On retrospect I think this was a good idea but it makes for a horrible early morning start. Overall I don’t regret visiting this place. I’m not sure I would’ve make the trek all the way across from Bali just for this though. I’ve certainly seen more impressive volcanos in Central America, specifically Guatemala. I also think this could be a nightmare to try to do in the high season months.

Bring a coat, it is over 2000feet up and freezing. If clouds allow it, the view is breathtaking. If it’s not foggy, the sunrise is incredible. The journey to Bromo is a very bumpy ride. Issues with backs? Think about this one. 4 wheel drive jeeps fly up and down as the drive on the rough terrain. Stunning volcano. Horses for the tourists look sad :(

Awesome view, you won't expect that you can get stunning scenery in tropical country. If you want to capture good sunrise scenery, you have to depart at 12am and get to Mt Pananjakan by 4am. Overall, worthy trip!

The road to this mountain is challenging, but that is the worthy experience. Riding horse and go to the top to see the beautiful scenery are the activities you must do if you come here.
After leaving this place, the memories won't be forgotten for a long time..

The hunt for the rising sun was the main thing I was looking for when I ventured to climb Mount Bromo in the east of this island of Java. When the night began to turn into, slowly but surely, it really fascinated and captivated me, although what I have to go through is quite a heavy climb to watch this sunrise. but in my opinion it is very feasible, the beauty of the mountain on the island of east Java is able to captivate anyone who visits it. In Mount Bromo, East Java, there are interesting places that I can explore to get the sensation of private sun hunting, I really like the view from the very quiet Penanjakan 2 hill which became my choice to get more privacy.

A visit to Bromo is pretty much mandatory for anyone visiting East Java. Being able to stand on the rim of an active volcano and witness close up the power of the earth is an experience it's hard to put into words.

However, your trip to Bromo involves so much more, and not a lot of it is fun.

Firstly, you'll most likely be paying someone to drive you up, at a pretty steep price. Then you have to pay to enter the so-called 'National Park'. And then you need to park up and pay another high fee to be taken on a four stop 4WD Jeep route along with a ton of other tourists.

The viewpoint is the first stop, and if you go for sunrise be prepared to be disappointed if you dislike crowds (I mean crowds) and maybe even unable to see it due to too many people. The view down to the crater, Semeru and Cemoro Lawang is stunning though, and worth making the trip alone.

You'll then go down to the the crater and be parked up strategically 1km from the steps up to the rim. This is to allow the horsemen to make more money out of you. I chose to walk to the rim, which is a pretty dusty experience, so a face mask is recommended.

Once you reach the rim, you'll forget all about the corruption and just be blown away. Depending on wind conditions and volcanic activity, you may actually be banned from getting close to Bromo, so it's a good idea to check ahead with tour agencies or online.

The Jeep then takes you across the black ash to a small and disappointing green mountain (Teletubbies Hill), and then stops again in the middle of the 'sea of sand', close to some cool volcanic rock formations. Selfie stick paradise for many I'm afraid...

I should point out I've been to Bromo before, and back then you were able to drive your own car up to the temple below the crater, as well as park by the viewpoints. Today it's all about making money and filling pockets, and with corruption at an all-time high in Indonesia, this trip left me feeling ripped off, and you only have to look around to see none of the money you're forced to hand over is put back into making the park cleaner or better for tourism.
