- Anet6 contributionsIt feels calm and peaceful here..I visited this cathedral with my niece when I have short staycation in Bandung. As Catholic, I joined the Sunday Mass here and led by the bishop itself. The cathedral is not big as cathedral in Jakarta but I like the design of interior and exterior. I will visit it again someday.Written September 6, 2022
- The_Pale_RidahGladesville, Australia1,996 contributionsSpot the Art-DecoSt Peter’s Cathedral was designed by C.P.W. Shoemaker in 1922, the same architect who designed the city’s most famous Art-Deco building, the Villa Isola. Considering Shoemaker’s considerable talents, his Neo-Gothic design seems very standard, but upon closer inspection some subtle Art-Deco features are obvious making this a great find for us. With that being said, most Europeans would easily mistake it for another boring church. The charming little cathedral features the typical characteristics found in many churches of the same period in Asia with a hint of the straight lines & smooth surfaces common in Art-Deco designs. The long curve of the main arch window in the front is a great example, it is free of detail & simple in style. St Peter’s Cathedral also features stained glass art with deep colours above the alter but is not illuminated at night. The acoustics are typically excellent. We encountered the local choir rehearsing before Sunday night Mass which was a nice experience to sit & listen. Immediately outside is a shrine to Mother Mary, it makes a peaceful place to pray amongst the ambience of the candle light, each representing someone’s prayers for help. Surrounding the cathedral nowadays are towering buildings which take away much of the cathedral’s magic. The encroachment of taller skyscrapers in the cathedral’s immediate space diminishes its presence which for a city of architecture is a huge error of incompetence. St Peter’s Cathedral is a Jesuit Catholic Cathedral & not part of the Dutch East Indies regime who were Protestants. Protestants practise of a type of Christianity that supports the ruler of England & not the Pope. After Napoleon Bonaparte conquered the Dutch during the Napoleonic Wars he allowed Catholics to enter Dutch territory without threat of death. When the Dutch regained its independence, the Catholic Jesuits had already established their presence in Java. Since the Dutch are not known for their fighting bravery unless it is against unarmed women & children, they avoided a costly war & instead stacked their gold high. The Dutch watched over the Portuguese with the help of the British Navy close by in Penang, both powers conspiring in secret to steal each others wealth. The Jesuits whose order originated in Portugal, a Catholic country, had colonies in East Timor, Ambon, Borneo & the Moluccas Islands, were now free to preach in peace but the tensions between the Dutch & Portugal were only just starting to heat up.Traveled as a coupleWritten April 28, 2013

I believe that this church is one of Bandung historical sites. I visited this church once, to see my friend’s choir. I am not a catholic, but I love the atmosphere within the church. It was very calm and nice to enjoy the architecture and paintings. The altar classical design and the old wooden benches will make us travel back to colonial era. Besides, if you are a Muslim, it is better to avoid eating in church’s canteen and look for other food around the area which you can find it easily. The church is also strategic, some of angkot (one type of Indonesian mass transportation) pass through the church.

This is a really nice and pretty old cathedral located in the heart of Bandung. I actually drive past it everyday but this was my first time to visit it. There is a large carpark with more parking space on nearby roads.
The cathedral is not a very large one but still very impressive both inside as well as the exterior with beautiful architecture. The age of the cathedral is almost a hundred years old so it was built during the Dutch colonial era.
Directly across the road from the cathedral is Bandung's main police headquarters which is quite comforting in this day and age. Also, I noticed that there was always a police car parked in the carpark.

If you are Catholic, happen to be in Bandung and looking for a church. St. Peter's is easy to locate with Heritage designed I should say.
While these days most Catholic Church has modern design. I am glad to see this church.
Mass I : Saturday, 17.00
Mass II : Sunday, 05.45
Mass III : Sunday, 07.00
Mass IV : Sunday, 08.30
Mass V : Sunday, 10.15
Mass VI : Sunday, 12.00
Misa VII : Sunday, 17.00
Daily Mass : 06.00 & 07.00
I prefer the early service on Sunday. Don't be surprise if you find that most of the time, the Church are full.
If you are driving, no worries. They have sufficient parking space.

The peaceful atmosphere here will boost your mood to attend a mass in a peaceful feeling.
I suggest you to attend an early morning mass or afternoon mass since usually there are not too many people attend the mass at that time so there won't be too noisy outside the church.
If you feel hungry after attending morning mass, you don't have to worry. You can simply find food stalls or canteen on the area behind the church which offer street food in affordable price.

My suggestion is to take a look at the official website and you can perhaps find the information you are looking for. Also, there is a contact email address where you can ask them directly about mass on 13 & 14 October and whether it is in English.
Good luck.

There is no English Sunday Mass at the Cathedral. There's a 10am Sunday English Mass at Chapel (GEMA) Sekolah Aloysius, Jl Sultan Agung #2, tel 4213257. An English Missal is very helpful in attending Mass at the Cathedral as there are no English Mass there, even on a Sunday.
