Great cooking class with Nyoman! We did the afternoon class and I checked beforehand to ask whether they could accommodate my mum who is 78. They were brilliant and made sure she was comfortable throughout the class, giving her a chair so she could rest during the lesson and assisting her on the way up and back. Nyoman picked us up and dropped us off, and we stopped at the rice fields on the way where he explained how the rice was grown, before heading to the class to make offerings, and then a cook a delicious 9 course meal. Excellent value for money and highly recommend.

Enjoyed it so much today. People are so friendly and helpful. We appreciated them catering for gluten free. They made it so much fun. Great for groups also. Food was delicious as they guide you through it all. Will come back when we back in Ubud.

Best cooking class I’ve taken

What an awesome experience. We took the morning class option which began with a visit to the markets, then rice paddies (sharing stories of where items are sourced for the class - not too long, just the right length of time)

Upon arrival at the beautiful compound the school is in, we received the story of the family before making traditional offerings.

Then into the food... it’s the perfect amount of hands on cooking and guidance that a novice would feel comfortable, a mediocre cook like me found super fun and interesting, and one of the guys in our tour group was a professional chef who came to this school specifically to learn new techniques and he loved it.

Then you sit down to eat your meal in a lovely setting. The hospitality is outstanding and I can see why this is such a highly recommended cooking class. You leave with all recipes and if you bring your phone, lots of great photos (and a VERY full belly). I believe afternoon class doesn’t include market due to timings but has all the rest. You won’t regret it and price is incredible.

Do not miss it! This is a must-go!

Driving uphill to Lapan already is an experience, showing you an amzing jungle view just 5 minutes outside crowded Ubud. Inyoman and his family welcomes you on their own compound with tea and cake, introducing you into a family home with it's directions (north-east the temple, close by the grand parents house, youth in the south, south-west the kitchen, west-north the private ceremony house). It is quite a holitic experience to learn firt how to do the offerings, starting from scratch with nicely cut banana leafs, how to fold them, how to use the tiny sticks to stable them together, how to arrange flowers and the pandan leafs for the gods, followed by a smaller version for ones own prayer. In the kitchen everything is prepared. They show you all ingredients, especially the 5 gingers with different taste and spicyness, the leafs, veggies and everything you need for a typical Balinese meal.
Nyoman takes the time to explain it all to us, the cutting, the mixing by hand with and without squeezing, the frying, the cooking, steaming, boiling. Only interrupted by sometimes tiny bites to raise the tension. In the yard they prepare coco nut wood to create char coal for the barbecue to grill the sticks with marinated tuna and the steamed tuna in the bana leafs. But also the vegetarion side of it doess not come short. Tempe, mushroom soup, a wonderful salad out of long beans and soya sprouts.... we learn how to color the rice with tumaric and how to vreate the famous sambal matah (raw spice) and also the peanut sauce. But the miracle behind all of it is the basic sauce, created in the beginning, that comes to almost every meal in different portions. Finally when we sat down, seeing our 9 dishes lined up in front of us we had one of the best meals ever. Thanks to Inyoman and his wonderful family. Do not miss it and also take the time to look around there. A different Ubud, embedded in a mystical Balinese jungle.
