Thursday 18th September and we passed this wonderful building on 2 seperate occasions. The first time we were walking down this busy street, where this Community Centre is situated, we were on route to the Monkey Forest Sanctuary at the end of the road. Hence the name of the road, Jalan Monkey Forest.
The building was closed as we passed, so we could not go in, however, we did stop for a few minutes to admire it's beautiful exterior.
The second occasion was in the evening we were on our way to dinner when we walked passed and heard the Balinese music emanating from the hall within the centre. There was a cultural show on, tickets were on sale outside on the street.
The entrance fee to see the Barong show was 80, 000 Rupiah, roughly £4.50.

Highly recommended if you want a good show and something a little cultural in Ubud near Monkey Forest.

This is just past the front, after leaving the Ubud Art Market.
Just take a photo, because the front exterior is nice, the photos will be good too hehe.

We saw The Frog Dance performed by a skilful cast of dancers and musicians including some children. The performance included the famous Barong dance and the dancers looked beautiful in their costumes and make up. The show was great value for money and the profit from the ticket sales goes to a local library which helps children to have the opportunity to borrow books.

This music of the gamelan orchestra was mesmerising, virtuosic and downright fantastic. This organisation promotes the propagation of Balinese culture and is a worthy cause. The costumes and dancing were interesting to.

We just happened to walk past the Community Hall on our way to Monkey Forest and we approached by a guy (Kadek) selling tickets for that evening (the show is only on Friday evenings). He showed us the where the show would be and promised to reserve seats for us. We asked for front row seats and when we arrived for the show, he had put our names on the chairs.
The show was beautiful and the outfits extremely colourful. The chairs can get quite uncomfortable after a while though.
Before arriving in Bali, we had read that the dance show at Ubud palace was not to be missed, but I don't believe it is as good and well organized as this one.

We noticed this place while walking along the Monkey Forest street and saw a ticket stand outside selling tickets for the Friday Dances.
As it was Friday we bought tickets and got seats reserved in the front row.
We came back at 7.30 pm for the performances.
The dancers were great and the attires were exquisite - colourful & beautiful.
The indonesian gamlan music on percussive instruments became a bit monotouos but all the different dances and performers made it good.
We saw 5-6 totally different classical balinese dances and it lasted 1,5 hrs.
We found it to be much better than you will see at typical tourist places,- even some places near by in Ubud.
Price was nice as well.

Good way to see a sample of the classical Balinese dances all in 1 evening. The venue is some sort of town hall on Jalan Monkey Forest, converted into a theater. Visitors enter the hall through the backstage area, so you pass through the dancers getting dressed which is abit strange but interesting to see the behind-the-scenes. A Balinese gamelan orchestra plays throughout the entire performance, which consists of 6-8 dances.

I selected this dance troupe for my first night in Ubud because of the venue (not at the likely very crowded Ubud Palace) rather than any knowledge of the dance troupe, although their venue was near the palace.
I arrived 30 minutes early and was the first person in the audience. Would I be the only one there? I left for about 20 minutes to wander around a bit. When I got back, there was an audience. Starting audience size was about 30 to 40 people with a handful of folks who trickled in after the performance started, almost all were tourists.
The gamelan that provided the music were all women players, so that is something of a rarity as gamelan players are traditionally men. I've listened to gamelan that had men and women, but that group was from Berkely, California, a city noted for embracing progressive ideals.
So the performance was geared toward the tourist in the sense that a variety of classical legong dances were presented. Many might comment on how repetitive it was, but that is certainly a subjective view. You'll quickly learn whether its to your taste and want to experience more . . . or less . . . or not at all.
I thought the quality of the dances and the music was good. It lasted from 7:30 to about 9 pm and ended with the appearance of the barong. For that part of the performance, not all the musicians were needed, so I found it funny that those who were "on break" were doing other things (see the picture I included). The show was almost over so it's understandable.
