Now overdeveloped, too commercial, too busy with motorbikes. Was a Hugely charming area for walking with one or two spots for a coconut water and chat with a farmer. Lost its charm. Only quiet at 5am or when it’s pouring rain. One of my long time favorite stretches of rice fields is now a zero lot line villa development for foreigners who didn’t build in the style of this area. Constant construction noise. If you are looking for pastoral and quiet and authentic — Much nicer rice field walking in areas a bit further north in ubud or Tegallalang.

We were expecting traditional rice fields that would provide a snapshot of the real Bali. Unfortunately it has been converted into a circus for people who want to take Instagram photos with all sorts of kitchy props. There are heart shapes, platforms, swings and other contraptions every few metres. All you can hear are the squeals and screams as tourists are launched into the air in numerous locations. Might be just getting too old for these sorts of places so we will let the youngsters have a good time and steer clear of the 'main attractions'.

Although more and more constructions seem to impact those ricefields, walking through them is still a nice and peaceful experience. I highly recommend the Kajeng rice fields and avoid Tegalalang ...
... for more spectacular and untouched rice fields, head to the northern parts of Bali (Munduk area).

This is a rural area north of Jl. Raya Ubud that is within close proximity to the city centre and a convenient opportunity to walk through working rice fields as part of visits to Ubud. In addition to seeing rice paddies and an impressive water irrigation system, there are numerous villas and some neat little coffee shops and cafes built up along the walkways.
We very much enjoyed a morning walking through the Kajeng Rice Fields recently, including a great stop at the cute little place called Brick Wurang where we were served sweet Banana juice drinks and an order of lumpia while enjoying views of the rice fields. Allow at least 1.5 hours to walk the fields and have a cafe stop before returning to the city centre.

An easy, pleasant and short walk (approx 1km) through fields. I took the Jl Kajeng “entrance”. I started out around 8 in the morning and came across a few walkers but overall I felt it was still safe as a solo walker.

We last did this walk in 2019 when we stayed in Ubud prior to Covid and at that time I would have given the walk a 5 star rating but it’s now a totally different experience. I appreciate that paving some of the walkways allows more people who may otherwise find the mud paths hard to negotiate the opportunity to see the area, but during our latest visit we spent the entire time having to move out of the way for the constant steam of mopeds/scooters that were riding around the paths surrounding the fields. It totally spoilt the peaceful walk we had experienced previously and it’s not something that we would choose to do again as it’s lost it’s charm.

Five of us did this walk late in the afternoon and stopped for an early dinner at a warning along the way. It was lovely. Walked back to jl kajeng in the dark but the walk was well lit for most of the way. Definitely a lovely way to spend an evening.

The scenery is beautiful. We did this around sunset one afternoon and it certainly is nice to escape the busy city. However, I do agree with other reviewers in that the constant flow of scooters and motorbikes does ruin the vibe of being out in nature. If I was doing this again I would either do it at sunrise or get out of Ubud completely

I woke up at 6am after flying into Bali the night before. A friend said "If you wake up, get up and go for a walk" I'm not a walker but as she is a Bali regular, I heeded her advice. And I am so so glad I did.
The beautiful hotel (guesthouse) we were staying at is on JL Kajeng so I walked up the street and followed the signs to Sweet Orange Warung.
It is a head spin to see the heaving street that was filled with markets the night before empty with only a few mopeds moving about. It was, initially, terrifying to see these mopeds on the tiny path I was walking on! But the further I walked, the quieter it became.
I did a 2.2km loop past the closed at 6.30am Sweet Orange Warung and back down to Ubud. The path at the end of the walk all but disappeared and I laughed walking over a plank covering where the path was.
But I did it and LOVED it! Would recommend it to anyone else visiting Ubud.

We’ve done this walk so many times and loved it that I just had to leave a review so that others might have the same chance. The walk starts by walking up Jl Kajeng from the main Jl Raya Ubud (look for the hand written tiles and stones in the roadway) and continuing until the road turns into a wide pathway from where cars can no longer proceed. The path goes gently uphill until you literally pop out in the spectacular scenery of the rice fields. Once past Luxxe Hotel there are a couple of narrow culverts above the creek to negotiate, and then as you cross over a small foot bridge, turn left to start making your way in the opposite direction, weaving past the multitude of yoga joints, art studios, accommodation and small warungs, until eventually you end up bac in Jl Raya Ubud and a left turn to get you back to the start. All up, it’s about 4.6km of mostly flat easy walking, some gentle uphill, the narrow culverts (see pics) and about 10 high steps up after turning left from the footbridge back to the main path. Best early morning as some areas are exposed to direct sunlight, but we’ll worth the effort.

Hi 👋🏼
We are looking for a driver for tomorrow.
Meeting points would be Alaya Hotel Ubud at 15:00. we would like to have a nice tour of about 3.5 hours and visit Tegalalang Rice Terrace in the evening for sunset.
Maybe one nice place before that.
How much is it and are you available for tomorrow?
Best regards, Natascha

Is the path wet, can you wear trainers/runners?
Written April 19, 2019
It certainly wasn't wet when we walked it. The path itself isn't rough, uneven or boggy. I think you can assume that you can wear whatever you like on your feet.

Ok so I am in Ubud and am able to navigate the streets on a wheelchair (having to get up and down from it (I can walk a few meters with crutches) because of scooters on the pathway. Will I be able to go to the rice fields in a wheelchair? Is it pathed?

Yes. Along Jalen kajeng. It is motorbike path

Do we need to pay a fee like Tegalallang Rice Terrace?
Written May 5, 2018
Free (no fee) This simple pleasant walk does not have terraces and is not an alternative to seeing the spectacular Tegalallang Rice Terraces.

Hi ,do we need a guide for this walk and if not where do we start our walk from.. we are in our mid 60,s withme of medium fitness level , its our first time in Bali and am not sure if we can do this on our own
Written August 27, 2017
hi! you can do it on your own. you just need basket shoes or a good pair of sandals. it starts left from from Puri Lukasam museum. the beginning is an unappealing narrow path. For 400 meters.
