About
Gamelan Semara Ratih was formed in 1989 as a collective of top musicians, composers, dancers, and choreographers from southern Bali, including many esteemed graduates of the national academy of the arts in Denpasar. Soon after its inception, the troupe became renowned in Bali for the power, excitement, dynamicism, innovation, and dramatic and musical breadth of its performances (the name of the troupe evokes the merging of the female and male principles of passion). Semara Ratih performs all around Bali, Indonesia, and internationally.

Best gamelan performance / dance in the area! The musicians were charming and clearly having fun. The dancers were amazing: gorgeous attire, beautiful choreo. We had great seats, thanks to good communication (Whatsapp), small-scale theater, genuine experience (not at all touristy). They hand out drinks and/or mosquito repellent on site. At the end the troup’s directors 5yo grandson made an encore performance, cute as a button!

I am so pleased we got to see Semara Ratih play! They are by far the best Balinese dance/music company we saw! So much energy - the music is amazing! They were fabulous and one of the highlights of our Indonesia trip.

At the moment they play every Tuesday at 7.30pm at Jaba Pura Desa Kutuh in Ubud. You can visit their website for more details just Google the name of the band Semara Ratih.

Tickets are not expensive. We arrived around 7pm but I think some people had got there much earlier and got better seats. The show lasts about an hour.

Would highly recommend. This is a must see if you're in Bali as far as I'm concerned. The group went on tour in Europe in 2010 so the standard is really high. They are also recommended in the Lonely Planet.

The leader of the dance troop, A. A. G. Anom is a exceptional dancer. I have seen him since he was still a teenager. His Baris dance was magnificent. Now he is older but still his technique, feeling, attitude and passion are superb! If you have never seen him before, you must see. It's as if you still have chance to see Michael Jackson dance. Highly recommend. He is a rather small, humble ordinary, relaxed person off stage but once on stage, he is art manifested.

The gamelan ensemble is simply amazing, one of the best I’ve ever seen! Their sound and their way of playing is hypnotic, the show lasts one hour but I could’ve watched them playing for hours. You can experience different traditional dances at the same time, I especially enjoyed the baris dance and the Barong dance.

We decided to go to this dance as opposed to the other ones around Ubud due the reviews we read. Glad we did as it really was fantastic. There were little amount of crowd, maybe 25 people, in a small temple about 15min walk from ubud palace. You only had to walk the main streets of hoards people to see the advertising for the other dances. I expect they wouldve been crammed in.
We paid 100000Rp =$10AUD at the door. Show started at 7:30pm and finished few minutes before 9.
Was riveting watching the intricacy of the dances. The men on instruments were so talented too. Be warned though, its quite loud with the acoustics in temple and type of instruments being played.
Well worth the experience from a well known dance troupe, with no crowds and up front views. Maybe take a little fan and water as it got quite warm inside.
Also get an english explanation on each dance

This is perhaps the best cultural music show we've ever seen. The music and dancing are fantastic, but the enthusiasm of the musicians is what takes this show to the next level. If you're in Ubud on a Tuesday evening, DO NOT MISS this show!

(Walk up the dark road even though it seems like there's nothing there. (Arrive a half hour early for the front row, but it was surprisingly uncrowded.)

Just fantastic.

I have been following Semara Ratih since 2011. I was mesmerised the moment i saw its performance. It is such a different Gamelan troupe with modern tempo music and performance style. The dancers are professional with years of experience under their belts.
