A great time to discover Balinese recipes. The “secrets” of sauces. Warm welcome, clear explanations, attentive to our questions. And in addition information on local culture. Pleasure of tasting good dishes. To discover

The Jambang Cooking Class was recommended by our accommodation. I had previously done the Paon Cooking Class that I enjoyed and wanted to do a different one this time. I had my sister and friend with me and I wanted it to be a good experience for them. We were picked up by Putu on time and we shared van with couple from the Phillipines, we then went on a scenic drive where we picked up a man from Dubai who had just finished a yoga retreat. On we went to a local market outside Ubud, we toured the market with Putu pointing out significant items such as snake beans or the different types of limes and there uses. We made our way to the family compound where we where welcomed by Made with a cool drink. We then made offerings baskets with plant material and decorated it with flowers. We were told the family temple was built first in 1930, then the buildings were built in set way. We made out way to the kitchen where food had made ready to chop and mince for dishes such as Gado Gado, Chicken Curry, Satay Lilit, chicken in banana leaves, banana caramel. The chicken was minced in a giant mortar and pestal and the peanuts in a smaller one. They did a vegetarian option for one guest and they had very yummy kebabs with plantain banana, capsicum, tempeh etc also a curry with banana in it, very nice. All the food was lovely and we helped prepare it. We booked through agent it was $35 each, we had about 8 in our group. Loved this morning out.

We were four friends attending a cooking class with two others, a small class of 6 persons.
We were participating in a very well organised program. We had hands on and learned a lot about many dishes. Made, the teacher, she made everything easy and funny.
The lesson was well prepared and the managing of time and subjects showed a great knowledge and experience.
I would gladly come back with more friends.

Excellent half day spent with this beautiful and kind family. We discovered the local market with local food we tasted. Then off to their beautiful home with the kindest people who taught us how to cook traditional Balinese meals. We had so much to eat in the end! Definitely something to do to experience the authentic Bali. Thank you again to this fantastic family for a great time and beautiful memories.

This is a must if you want to experience Balinese life and culture and learn to cook the food that Indonesians eat.
Everything about this visit was well planned, executed and the final part was not only in the cooking but the eating.
I won't spoil this experience by giving a complete run down...
Simply put, wonderful home, great cooking, brilliant company and a never forgotten experience.
Enjoy

This is a family run cooking school so they really do take care of their own facilities and offerings. They provide pick up service free of charge and do not stuff it with people so it is very private. They prepare you MORE than enough food. The ladies do a diligent job to explain the food and cooking preparations. I've only done three different cooking classes in my life and this is highly recommended. The price point is cheaper than hotel based yet the service is excellent. The facilities are clean and very smoothly operated. We chose this over some of the other higher ranked ones because we wanted a more private class with dialogue, and preparation of food throughout the entire process, not just one part of the cooking process while other groups take care of the other parts. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I attended this cooking class with friends in December. The cost was 350,000 IDR per person. The class includes the following:
Pickup from your lodging
Visit to market to see ingredients
Cooking lessons in a traditional Balinese family compound
Eating the meal the cooking class prepared
Print outs of each recipe
Transport back to your lodging
While a visit to the market shows you the ingredients you’ll be cooking with, if you are familiar with ginger, turmeric and galangal, there really isn’t much more to learn. I’d be happy if this section of the class was cut out to shorten the day.
We had a tour of the family compound which included information on the Balinese culture and offering customs. This was interesting and very informative.
The class itself was very informative. I would have liked to make each meal myself. Instead we were put into groups to make different items. It would have taken forever to make all the meals by myself so I understand why we had to divide the labour in groups. Having recipes to take home made up for not making each menu item myself. Some of the meals we made were:
· Snake bean and coconut salad
· Chicken Satay sticks with peanut sauce
· Vegetable soup
· Chicken Curry
· Yellow curry base
· Gado-Gado
· Fried tempeh
· A banana desert
The instructors were friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The facilities were nice and clean and there was ample space. The group was about 15 people.
It was a long day. We were picked up at 9am and arrived back at 3pm. I feel like these lessons were good value for money.
