I spent 5 days here learning painting techniques with Bruce. It was truly a special experience. Not only an inspiring artist but also a master teacher, I learnt loads from him. By the end of the course I produced art I was really proud of, and did not think I could do! But much more importantly, it was loads of fun, and full of enjoyment and creative challenge. Bruce was really encouraging and brilliant at making this a great experience. I would recommend doing a course here highly.

For a myriad of reason for many years I believed I couldn't draw. This year has been somewhat of a challenging one, so I decided to challenge long held beliefs, one of which was I couldn't draw. I stumbled across Bruce and the Bali Centre for Artistic Creativity, contacted Bruce who was very quick with his reply, informing him that I am in interested in abstract and realism art, art therapy and Rudolph Steiner's colour theory and would it be possible to learn all this in 15 hours spread over 5 days. I also informed Bruce that I would be a challenge as I can't draw and I wouldn't hold him personally responsible if he didn't succeed. As a teacher, my students would often ask my assistant to draw because my dogs look like sheep which look like cats which could also look like a cow depending on the tail and ears. My pictures were very symbolic and stuck in the schematic stage often seen in children aged 5-6. For the past 2 decades, I have used art as therapy in my classrooms but I really want that to mature and be more faithful to art therapy. I have find myself stifled because of my lack of artistic talent in how I can extend my students and give them new ways to express themselves. Upon meeting Bruce, he very confidently told me that he has never failed and I will be drawing by the week's end. I did laugh. Well, I must say, I have to eat my words. Bruce is incredibly patient. He explains steps and the theory behind the procedure. He is more interested in the process than the product, giving his students room to breathe and space to create. I clearly wanted to be pushed beyond my limits and work well and truly within and extending to my Zone of Proximal Development (Vygosky). When Bruce saw that I really had no concept of how to draw in proportion or perspective, he patiently demonstrated how and worked with me to better understand the process behind drawing. I even learnt how to use a prism. That was like whole new world being opened up. I know I have very long way to go and 15 hours was just the tip of the ice berg, but I have come away completely loving how creative I can be in abstract art, knowledge on how to use art in my classroom and to me more importantly, on a personal level, I can draw in proportion and in perspective. Bruce achieved the unachievable through teaching me how to draw using the right side of the brain. A process first introduced by Betty Edwards. I can not thank Bruce enough for what he mastered in such a short time and I will definitely be back. I highly recommend Bruce to anyone interested in developing their skills, challenging themselves mentally or for spending several hours in the comfort of an artist’s studio learning new skills. There are so many art centres and opportunities for art exploration in Ubud the customer is spoilt for choice, but I think they will have to go a long way to surpass what Bruce offers.

I am very grateful to Bruce, wonderful artist that he is, but I am most grateful for having met a truly great teacher. Every word was encouraging, motivating and confidence boosting. Over three days, not one word about what you should not have done or should be doing... fun the whole time! I doubt that anyone ever regrets their decision to attend the BCAC, which is also a brilliant space to work in.
