An incredible day with our amazing host Sunday, kicking off at the local markets then back to his stunning 400-year-old family compound to cook up a storm (the garden is breathtaking). We learnt more about Balinese culture during this time than in all our previous trips to Bali. The kids (12, 14) had a blast and got right into the cooking. I would recommend this as a must-do experience in Ubud.

We are into our 2nd week in Indonesia and this was by far the highlight of our trip. Going to the market, learning about the way of life for the beautiful people who make this island home, and the amazing food we helped make was such an amazing experience. Thank you for making this experience part of a life time trip!

I had been debating between the top few cooking classes offered for Ubud on TA... To be honest the top three have good reviews on the whole, however, I ended up choosing Lobong, and although they are (or were at the time of choosing) #3, they definitely offer a #1 service!
My wife and I were collected promptly at around 7.50am on the chosen morning, and along with another guest driven around 25 minutes to a local market. NOT I will add, to Ubud market, which is just full of tourist junk, but an actual, local market. We were the only non Balinese there. We were a group of 9, so not too big, and were shown around by one of the brothers who runs the class.
His English was brilliant, and he explained everything very well and showed us all the spices and root ingredients that are such an integral part of Balinese cooking. It was very insightful and at no point felt like we were just following someone around, it was informative and interactive. A great start to the day.
From here we were driven to the family compound in which they live, and given a tour of where, and more importantly, how they live. We were told about the family history and the cultural side of how Balinese families live. Again, it was very informative and educational.
The class itself was very good. Run by another brother, he too was very good, good English, and very helpful throughout. We learnt all about how to use the spices and the methods of cooking the multiple dishes that we made. Everyone played a part in the class and everyone had vital input to the finished product. It was well run and everyone clearly had a great time and enjoyed it thoroughly.
Before sitting down to eat, we all experienced a big part of Balinese culture, and that is the offerings. It was a very nice touch, and gave the whole experience a very Balinese feel.
We sat down to eat around 1pm, and by this time were all starving and looking forward to eating everything we had just prepared, and that we did. A nice cold beer to accompany the multiple dishes we had created.
The food was lovely, the family were lovely and the experience as a whole was exceptional.
They even give you a parting gift, a small book of the recipes and ingredients for the menu we had made, and also a bottle of coconut oil. Just another nice touch, from a very nice and well run family business.
I'd be surprised if Lobong don't make it to #1 on trip advisor, they provide an excellent service from start to finish and we couldn't recommend highly enough.

This is a very fun day.
The day will start with the company picking you up from your hotel. After everyone has been picked up you will then proceed to the market where they will educate you about the local produce. After the informative stop they will take you over to their property.
The class takes place in their compound or house. You will partake in the daily rituals and prayers to the elders and then go on to the actual class. They will teach you how to prepare each ingredient and the proper steps to prepare each dish. During our specific experience they also taught us how to make coconut oil. After all the cooking you will then be rewarded with the spoils of your work. Gathered together in a big communal table you will drink and dine.
After every one is done it is time to pay up and you will be escorted back to your hotel.

We saw some offers for cooking classes on the streets, being held in Warungs and cafes, and we are so glad we decided to book online after reading reviews.
Lobong Cooking Class does not disappoint. In fact, it's better than we expected.
We were picked up from our hotel at 8am, but an talkative and friendly driver, taken to a local market to join the rest of the group. There were 7 other tourists that joined our group, and we met our guide, Sang De. Sang De, guided us through a local market, only used by locals to purchase food. We could tell that this was an authentic local market, because not once, were we approached by a seller trying to convince us to buy something. We were a bit of an attraction to the locals as the only foreigners in the market. Sang De was funny, informative as he directed us around the market, explaining the various customs, spices, and vegetables.
After exploring the local market, we were taken to the Snag De's family compound, where we were shown around the compound, receiving a full explanation followed by banana fritters and ginger tea/balinese coffee.
Soon afterwards, our teacher, Sang De's brother-in-law took us through the cooking class.
The entire experience was amazing, starting at 8am and finishing at 2:30pm. It included seeing how to cook and actually chopping, grinding and cooking traditional dishes consisting of soup, curry, rice, and sweet green crepes.
Everyone involved in the Lobong Cooking Class is polite, professional, speaks english and is entertaining and informative. There are plenty of opportunities to ask questions and they ensure that everyone gets involved.
It concludes with being served the meals we prepared, including free beer or softdrink and being given a recipe book & home-made coconut oil to take home. The whole experience cost my wife and I approx 850K, and we also purchased a Volcanic Rock Pestle & Mortar for only 80K.
I highly recommend this experience to anyone including kids, as it's a hands on authentic experience full of great flavour and food.

This is a great option in Ubud if youre looking for culture - you not only get to understand what goes into a Balinese meal and try cooking it for yourself - you also get to see a non-touristy marketplace where the ingredients are sourced. In fact, the trip to the market was the best part of they day, since the actual cooking can drag on a little (3+hours). It's a lot of time to spend on your feet in the midday sun, even in the shade. Also, the portion sizes are pretty small per person, and I recommend you don't go if you only like mild food, as there isn't a 'no chilli' option! Overall, a great market tour with a decent cooking class and mediocre meal at the end of it.

This family- run business takes you right into the heart of traditional Balinese living. For over 5 hours Sang De, our host and market guide, and Dewa, our chef and food guide, stepped me and four other 'cooks' (they take up to 10) across the threshold into their home and lives. Their brother-in-law Gunk De arrived to collect me at 7:45. He had a smile so wide it could have lighted up the universe. We collected another couple attending the course and then went straight on to their local market where we met up with the knowledgable and delightful Sang De and took a stroll thru the narrow alleys and piles of fresh food to learn about Balinese ingredients and culture. Then it was on to their beautiful family compound to rest and have a drink, eat some yummy banana fritters, learn more about Balinese culture and have a lesson in making coconut milk and coconut oil. Next, Dewa's cooking lessons were gentle and encouraging. When it came time to eat the 10 dishes we'd prepared they were presented beautifully, restaurant-style. The menu itself was superb and I loved that everything was fresh -including the coconut oil made that morning. Gunk De told me on the way back that everyone in the family has a background in tourism or hotel management and it shows. Cool towels to soothe one from the heat, snacks and drinks just when you need them, fine food, super clean everything (including western toilets) and the famous Balinese happiness and love that seems to seep into very aspect of this heavenly day. And on top of all that a gift bag to take home! A wonderful experience that I'd recommend.

Absolutely agree with all the other reviews but do feel that I should add that if you are after a cooking class with a lot of hands on cooking experience then this may not be right for you. I really loved the whole experience however was expecting a more hands on learning experience which isn't really what this is. Don't get me wrong, you do get to share in the cooking however I would have preferred it if I made the whole dish myself from start to finish with help from the teacher. Other than that a very enjoyable day.

I spent quite some time researching cooking classes available in Ubud, as my friends and I had quite specific and high expectations of what we were looking for. We are regular cooks ourselves of Asian/spicy/curry style dishes and have been to many classes throughout our travels previously, so we wanted to pick something A) different, and B) quality menu. Lobong was nothing short of faultless and without doubt delivered (beyond) our expectations.
The booking experience was faultless, also including an email for confirmation the day prior to ensure we had arrived safely in Bali in light of recent volcano prompted cancellations.
Sunday, the family host, collected us from our Ubud hotel promptly and as planned. His English was excellent, he was interacting in our conversation and pointing out various interesting features as we drove through Ubud.
Our first stop was a local market where we were shown various fruits, vegetables, aromats and spices. Sunday gave us so many interesting stories and information about the ingredients, we were invited to touch and taste some ingredients, including an interesting fruit we were curious as to what it was. So kind he purchased us each a sample! At the end of the market tour, we were given ice cold water and icy cold face cloths which were welcomed!
We were then taken to the family compound, welcomed not as guests but as extensions of their family. Time was taken to inform us about the various buildings and customs, we admired the meticulous gardens and we were treated to Pisang goreng (banana fritters) before our class commenced.
The next few hours we spent in the kitchen interactively learning and involving in the process. As we were the only people in the class this day we were able to customise the spice level of the dishes, adding extra chilli!
When it came time to enjoy our meals, we were offered to enjoy Bintang and soft drinks with the meal. The food, without doubt, was amongst the best we have all ever eaten and that's not just in bali!! The menu is just amazing, whilst chicken satay (sate Lilit ayam) was on there, the common "fried rice and noodles" weren't on there rather we learnt essential Bali spice bases and various associated dishes. Definitely the style of class we were looking for.
Without doubt, this was one of the best experiences I have ever had whilst travelling. And I would gladly return even if the menu remain unchanged! Don't hesitate or look any further than Lobong for your cooking experience whilst in Bali. It was so much more than just a cooking class, it truly was a faultless culinary experience.

Having done several Balinese cooking classes around Ubud in the past, well, this one is easily the best. Small group (max12) starting with hotel pick up/drop off, highly informative and relaxed amble through the local market, and a very well organised and interesting cooking class all in a lovely home compound setting. The principle guides, Made mainly on the market and compound family life, and chef Dewa on the actual cooking class - along with other family members - did a truely excellent, personalised, job. To top it off the lunch is served a la carte. 10/10.

Hello, what is the price of the course? What are the dishes? Do you visit the market as well? How long in advance do we have to book? Thanks, Marketa

Hi, I am interested in taking the class with my 2 kids, 9 and 7 yrs old each, and would like you to confirm if they are good to join. Thanks!

Were there many people attending the class?
Did you get to have a go at cooking all the dishes or was the class divided into groups and given separate tasks?
Many thanks!

There was about 10 people in the class, we all did different parts of each dish and in some parts we all got to have a go for example making the skewered chicken was something that everyone did at the same time. Hope that helps

Hi,
I had a few issues when I tried to use the web based enquiry form, couldn't tell if it had gone through. I sent them an email and 2 days later they confirmed and replied. Sometimes if they have village festivals they may take a few days to reply.
Cheers

I can't get through and would like to book tomorrow. Can you please let me know available times and how long each class goes for
Written September 16, 2017
Hello,
I'd advise sending an e-mail or ringing them, they will reply as they are very efficient. They are usually booked up so advanced booking is recommended...
It's one class a day starting early to visit the markets at 8am till 3.30pm...

How much hands on cooking do you get to do by yourself?
Written August 19, 2017
The menu you will experience is extensive - maybe eight dishes in total - so you can't possibly prep and cook the dishes individually. It's a combined effort because Balinese cooking is very time consuming and while simple, has many steps to the method, particularly as there isn't a food processor in sight. Therefore, some of the time you are hands on, other time you watch others in the group do it or the staff demonstrate. You certainly don't sit around and watch all day. I've done lots of cooking classes in Thailand, Cambodia etc and yes in most cases you prepare and cook your individual serves. Here you all pitch in, but it means there's a sense of community build up in the group and then you truly share the meal at the end because you've all contributed. You get to interact not only with the instructor and staff, but with each other.
