My partner and I did the Batur Sunrise trek from our accommodation in Ubud. We had an incredibly clear morning and could see right across to Agung! The walk is certainly steep in parts and we’re glad we wore hiking boots. Jero was fabulous and organised, picked us up and dropped us off while his brother was our guide on the trek itself. An early start but we were home by mid-morning. Would recommend this for a little adventure and awesome volcanic scenery all before 9am!

One of the must do activities on the island, and one of the few guided activities where you get most bang for your buck. First off, a personal driver picks you up at night where you are staying on the island and then drops you off afterwards. If you ever hiked in the mountains at night, the hike up the mountain will not present any sort of a challenge. Otherwise, just stick by your guide who will make sure you do not get lost. Though, there are so many other people doing this activity that it is unlikely that you will get lost even if you lose the sight of your guide for a while. Once you reach the top of the mountain, there will be lines of benches on the east side of the mountain for you to sit on and enjoy the sunrise. And I do really mean enjoy: once you are seated, the guide will go away for a while and then come back with hot cocoa, hot banana toasts and some other goodies. Just make sure you are dressed warm enough: it gets surprisingly chilly before the sun is up, which you won't feel while hiking. After the sunrise you get about half an hour to roam around on the top ridge before heading back. On the way back, the driver may offer to visit a coffee/cocoa plantation. Feel free to agree as there are no fees for just visiting it (except for the tip to the driver for the extra time). Just don't go overboard with purchasing 'local' chocolate and coffee - the part is a tourist trap and what they sell is not worth the money they charge for it.

Tough hike in the dark but rewarded with the most beautiful sunrise atop Mount Batur. 5 of us made the trek with a wonderful guide to the top. Breakfast and monkeys. Amazing vista before the colourful hike back down seeing everything you couldn’t on the way up.

Paying the extra for a private tour was amazing! Our driver would pick us up from our accommodation. We were in already in ubud so it was an hours drive to the starting point. You could walk at your own pace with your tour guide. Very friendly and easy going tour guide. Very informative. You have the option of easy or hard route. Although the easy route we still found difficult at times. But there is plenty of opportunities to stop on the way up. Once you reach the top you get a hot drink and breakfast which was cooked using the steam off the volcano. The trek up the mountain was worth the view. It did not disappoint. Was amazing! After our guide took us along the top of the volcano at different points for photo opportunities. We got some amazing photos! The walk down is easier. Once we finished we enjoyed some time to relax in the hot springs which is included. This helped our sore legs from walking!!! Very organised tour. The highlight of our trip by far!
