- soniya a19 contributionsIf you are influencer or public profile on Instagram this is a good visitThe Handara Gate in Bali is undeniably stunning, serving as a picturesque Instagram spot. However, its appeal largely rests on aesthetics alone, with little historical or contextual information provided. Visitors often endure long queues just for that perfect snapshot, detracting from the overall experience. If you're seeking cultural depth, this may not be the ideal stop, but for those chasing Instagram-worthy moments, it's worth the wait.Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 23, 2024
- Leigh C42 contributionsUnderwhelmingWhen we got there I was so disappointed. There are so many lovely gates all throughout Bali, it was a long drive with a lot of traffic and it turned out to be just another gate. It looks much more impressive in pictures, in real life it was quite underwhelming. If you are more interested in your social media "likes" than enjoying the sites, then I guess it may be worth it. The line to take pictures was long and goes by number. But people were taking so long when it was their turn so it took forever. Eventually we gave up and left because I didn't want to waste the entire morning lining up. Took a selfie from our spot in the line and used Google pics to edit out other people from the picture. We left and went to Ulunu Danu 5 minutes away which was way more impressive.Visited December 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten December 3, 2024
- Antonio DDubai, United Arab Emirates31 contributionsNothing special!I don't understand how this gate to a Golf resort ended up in the "to do" list!! just a tourist trap - you queue up to take photos in front of the gate and pay 10,000 rupiah for the services using your own mobile and those pics are nothing special! Its not even an ancient gate!Visited December 2024Traveled with friendsWritten December 5, 2024
- MichelleCanberra, Australia17 contributionsHandara Gate in Bali - Skip This Tourist TrapDespite its Instagram fame, Handara Gate is nothing more than an ornate entrance to a golf resort that's become a victim of its own social media success. We waited over two hours just to snap a single photo at this overcrowded spot. The area around the gate is packed with tourists forming chaotic queues, all vying for the same shot. While the gate itself is admittedly beautiful with its traditional Balinese design, the experience is completely ruined by the overwhelming crowds. Save your precious vacation time and explore Bali's many other authentic temples and gates instead - ones where you can actually appreciate the architecture and culture without feeling like you're waiting in line at an amusement park.Visited September 2024Traveled soloWritten December 31, 2024

The iconic Handara Gate is located in the village of Pancasari, Bedegul. It is very famous because of its dark Balinese architecture & the beautiful smoky mountainous hill view with lush greenery in the background. However, it is nothing more than the entrance gate to the Handara Golf & Resort. I thought it was an entrance to some temple like the usual fanfare. Little that I know.
Handara Gate is just on the side of a main road. There is a tent on the left hand side which doubles as the ticket counter. The place started to become one of the tourist hot spots in 2018. You must pay an entrance fee of IDR30,000 & stand in line before you are given the opportunity to take a photo at the gigantic gate. However, if you are staying at the resort, then it’s free of charge.
It is best to go early in the morning to beat the crowd. We were there after lunch & the queue was abominable! So, we headed off to Wanagiri instead & came back afterwards. By then, the queue had shortened but it was still a wait. The group before us were from Philippines & they took at least 30 mins taking ridiculous photo poses. Overall, I think we waited at least for an hour!
Nevertheless, it was worth the wait. The view was spectacular. Unfortunately, our tour agent didn’t take good photographs of my partner & I.

Actually very easy to find a Gapura in Bali. But I think this place is quite iconic. It was well maintained and also has a beautiful Balinese gate structure. Only the entrance fee is quite expensive compared to the time we can take photos.

Gate made famous because of Instagram!
We visited this gate because it is so popular in pictures. It is NOT an entrance to any temple or a holy place but a golf resort. Plus in Ubud, such gates are dime a dozen and you will find lovely picturesque gates at the nearby Ulun Danu Beratan Temple which is worth the visit.
Only stay here if you don’t find crowds and are willing to pay 30.000 per head for a picture. Otherwise there are better places where you can take picture with gates for free and without so many crowds

We were dropped off to see this gate as part of a tour. Admittedly, we had not done our research, and discovered after paying for 'entrance' that this gate is simply an entrance way for a golf resort, no other history behind it.
The setting is lovely, with a backdrop of the Bali jungle. The gate is very nice, with the typical Indonesian styling found in so many other gates across Bali.
Once there, we were to join a queue and wait while people spent a long time perfecting their Instagram perfect photo. We were quite shocked by what we were watching: multiple poses, shouting at and directing poor family members tasked with taking the photo, and more and more people arriving to do the same.
There are some beautiful temples in Bali, with beautiful gates. Skip the instagram madness and get a great snap in front of something with some real history!
We jumped out of the queue after a while, and took a snap of the gate in between people taking their shot. If you really want a picture of the gate itself, this is a good way to avoid the mind numbing queue. You will still have to pay an entrance and parking fee for this. I have read that getting there early also helps, but be warned: when we arrived, there were only about 4 places in front of us, but given that one lady spent 20 minutes perfecting her photo and harassing her daughter, you can still expect a wait.

Having traveled extensively in Indonesia over the last 41 years I can honestly say this is the least value for money. We paid 50,000 each just to go close to the gate and take a photo, but you might have to wait and in line for over an hour to click your camera. Little did we know that there is a similar gate at the nearby temple, and all over Bali too. Save your money and give this place a miss. Much better value at the nearby temple which costs 75,000 and there is much to keep you occupied for an hour or more.

The gate was about 2 hours driving from Kuta, and was actually the entrance to a golf course, with the ticket cost IDR50,000pp to take the picture. The queue was not long at the time we were there. It took us about 30 minutes or so to wait for our turn. There was a staff to call out the queuing number and he was willing to help us to take nice pictures.

Alright guys, if you are planning a visit here, let me break the bubble for you. These darn gates are everywhere in Bali, like, really, everywhere. At temples, hotels, restaurants, resorts, and they are at every 5 meters in front of the Kuta beach. If you think this is an unique destination, you are extremely mistaken. Also, this place is really faaaaaar from Kuta/Seminyak/Legian by about 2 hours.
If you are going to Ulun Danu Bratan temple, this place is on the way. They charge parking and entry fees, and there is a line to take photos. Absolute waste of time.

A very disappointing experience. The area you pay to take a photo is nothing more than the entrance of a hotel. It doesn’t offer any special experience, and there are much better and more beautiful places you can visit in the area and throughout Bali. After all, what matters most is the culture, not just the click.

As a standalone sight, this place is just not worth ur time and money. This gate pales in comparison to the Gate of Heaven, and hence, visitors should temper down their expectations.
Instagram and reality are different in this case. The waiting time for the pics need to be accounted for while tourists plan their trip. There is a friendly staff who will offer to take pics with a reflector glass for a "Donation". While the effort is appreciated, tourists should first check the pics before paying him.
In short, this place is recommended only as a stop over while on tours to Sekumpul or Ulan Danu temple, else it is best avoided.

This is just a few minutes drive from the Ulun Danu Beratan temple and is just a photo stop on the way. Our driver had taken us inside the Golf resort initially but brought us back and was kind enough to take photos for us here. Given the hype this has acquired, there would almost always be quite a few people around here. Wouldn't recommend this as a must visit but a few minutes here won't harm due to the proximity to Ulun Danu Beratan.

The location on trip advisor map says it is the southern part of bali but the reviews that that it is in northern part. Can someone please let me know if the location on tripadvisor map is correct?
Written May 7, 2019
The map shows it is in the northern central part. Uluwatu is in the south

Hi!!! Does this place charge for foreigners? Is it worth going with small kids?
Thanks in advance
Written March 8, 2019
Yes they have entrance tickets 30k/person. Around 2.50 USD. It is located in North area of bali around 2 hours drive from South. Closer if you stay in Ubud. Small kids will be a bit difficult maybe since will be long drive.
