My wife and I booked this trip for Thanksgiving 2023. We were both extremely pleased with every aspect. There are a lot of different booking options available out there, but at the end of the day we were fortunate to stumble upon Indo Travel Team. I'm very glad we went with them, and I can't imagine a better planned, guided, or adventurous trip.

COMPANY:
We chose Indo Travel Team after searching for packages because they were reasonably priced and other travel bloggers referred them. We've traditionally looked on Klook, but we've learned that those can be a crapshoot and you never know what you're going to get. They did a fantastic job with this package. Pierrick was extremely responsive and leading up to our trip replied to my emails very quickly and always on the same day. Once we were picked up, we didn't have to do much thinking at all because everything was so well planned out. We were also pretty nervous since this was our first trip to Indonesia, but everyone we interacted with was extremely professional and courteous. Even those who weren't part of Indo Travel Team.

LODGING:
You'll stay at 2 hotels during this trip, both of which have WiFi. The first, at Mt. Bromo, is on the edge of the caldera and the scenery is gorgeous. This hotel is at high altitude (2,000+m) so it can get chilly, but the rooms are warm and comfortable. They make it clear that this package is for adventurers, so this hotel is not a resort. But we hiked Mt. Fuji last year and we slept on the floor of a shared hut with 40+ strangers, so having our own room on Mt. Bromo was great. The next lodging, for Kawah Ijen, was a traditional western style hotel. It was much hotter at the second location, but the hotel had WiFi and A/C, so it was very comfortable. You'll only be at each hotel for a short while anyway, so we were surprised at how comfortable they were.

FOOD:
You'll be given so much food over these few days. We never even touched the snacks we packed. You'll be provided dinner the night before Mt. Bromo, coffee/snacks while hiking Bromo, breakfast after Bromo, lunch en route to Kawah Ijen, dinner before Kawah Ijen, and then a huge breakfast after hiking Kawah Ijen. We never really had a chance to get hungry before we were served the next meal. Everything was absolutely delicious, and you can tell the guides put a lot of thought and effort into each meal.

TRAVEL:
We flew into Surabaya to save on travel time and were driven to Mt. Bromo. This was about 2.5 hours, versus 8+ hours from Bali. Our driver, Faiza(?) was great and told us all about the countryside and mountains, and answered many of our random questions. After Mt. Bromo you'll be taken to Kawah Ijen, which can take several hours. This is a trek for adventurers after all. You'll stop for lunch on the way and the driver can stop for any needed break, so we had plenty of time to stretch our legs. After Kawah Ijen you'll be taken to Bali and traffic in Bali dictates this travel time. We took another 6-7 hours. This may be a lot of riding in a minibus, but the scenery really is gorgeous. I never knew just how many volcanoes Indonesia has and you'll see dozens along the way. You'll turn a corner and see a towering, 10,000' behemoth belching smoke. It's really stunning.

HIKING:
Hiking Mt. Bromo was the easier of the two. You'll shove off around 3am and visit two locations; Mt. Bromo's rim and King Kong Hill. each hike takes about 30 minutes each? Give or take 10-15 minutes. Kawah Ijen is definitely more challenging, but I wouldn't call it challenging. You'll leave the hotel very early, around 1am, and then begin the hike at ~2:30am. You'll have to crest the rim and descend into the crater, so this hike takes longer, about 1h30m. We were extremely lucky and the blue flame was quite large, but there was also a lot of smoke. The gas masks realllly helped. The guides know all the best photo spots and will take plenty of photos along the way too.

LUGGAGE:
I couldn't find definitive information about storing luggage when I was searching, so I want to include it here for others. We had luggage with us the entire trip and we never felt like it was unsecure. At Mt. Bromo it stays in your locked hotel room while hiking. However, you will take it with you when hiking Kawah Ijen since you won't return to the hotel. Your luggage stays with the driver in the minibus and we had no issues whatsoever and felt comfortable the whole time.

A completely fantastic experience that I will tresure forever. For a few hours before sunrise, It felt like being on an alien planet, seeing the acid lake crater illuminated by moonlight with sulfur smoke rising from it. Detailed communication before the trip by Patrick. It was a long ride from Bali, but our driver looked after us well. Accomodation was surprising good. Private room with ensuite shower. Hary, our guide for the trek up, was great! Made an effort to get to know everyone, made sure the pace was not too challenging while ensurinflg we reached the crater in time to witness the blue fire. There was strong winds blowing sulfur smoke over the blue fires and many people were struggling to get good pictures and videos. He took our phones, when into the smoke and got fantastic shots for all of us. Really awesome experience.

The tour is just perfectly we'll organized and all people involved are soooo kind, responsive and helpful (managers, drivers, guides, restaurant staff). I ended up going on the 3 day tour alone, because no one else booked it and after I worried at first, I felt soooooo comfortable after a couple of minutes because every step is so well organized and communicated that you just feel comfortable and safe. My driver Reza dropped me at the Java Port and made sure I got on the correct ferry and in Java Aly the driver was already waiting for me and communicating with me via Whatsapp. From then on it's a lot of driving, but made as comfortable as possible and the reward of the stunning volcanoes is just amazing. Bromo just blew my mind. The guides Untung, Pur & Hary we're just perfect as well and had a lot of knowledge and took care of the whole group safety wise. Accomodations is simple on this trip as announced and the staff is so nice. Food is always local and good, especially the dinner and breakfast at Ijen which is provided in a restaurant run by Aly and his wife. Highly recommend it and again thanks to everyone and special thanks to Aly for driving me for hours across Java!

Memories of my East Java trip will live forever. Thank you Indotravel for the beautiful experience seeing Kawah Ijen as a solo traveller. Thank you to the guides who really made their effort in keeping us safe and to Pierrick who translated the hike briefing in English even if i'm the only one who doesn't speak French. ☺️🫶🏔️

Thank you very much for your feedback and for your appreciation of the English briefing (even if his English is far from perfect). We are all (drivers, tour leaders, guides...) happy to read your satisfaction with this feedback. We look forward to seeing you again on our tours of the active volcanoes of Java and Bali.

I could say a million things but the success of any tour is how they ensure a great experience for every traveller and that's what Info travel does. They work with the locals as well and ensure that they are well compensated. Our trip manager Archer is the bestest. He is soo awesome and kind. I am a vegetarian and he ensured that I had my food managed at each locations.also I was the weakest link on the group in terms of fitness and he did everything to ensure I was comfortable. They are the best 😊

This was an epic trip to Kawah Ijen! The organisation of the tour and the guides were excellent. For example, the guides were receptive to the needs of the hikers by taking breaks on the way up and checking in when descending into the crater. As others have written in their reviews, if leaving from Seminyak or Ubud be prepared for long journeys to and from Ijen (+5hrs) but being in the crater when the sun comes up is a memory you won't forget fast - truly amazing experience. And if your memory isn't great, the guides are excellent at getting the spots and taking the best pictures. Do it!

I did 3D2N tour to Bromo and Kawah Ijen.
THE GOOD: this is a must see in Indonesia. On this tour the local guides were incredible: Epi personally adds value to the time spent on the road explaining about the culture, plantations, etc and ensures there are breaks while on the roads; the guides on Kawah Ijen make you feel safe and share their knowledge too.

THE BAD: The tour is nearly 2X more expensive vs others and the value for money isn’t there. The manager (Pierrick) is rude towards his customers, not open to feedback, and should really not work in tourism. In retrospect, I would book with a local tour operator in Bali. I just hope most of the money goes to the local guides and driver…
Good Karma guesthouse at Bromo is terrible: I had no hot water in my room (and was not fixed when mentioned to them) and some other rooms didn’t have water at all. The walls are super thin and the rooms incredibly humid and cold - they don’t even provide electric heaters which they do have in other accommodations. Pierrick will tell you this is the best you can get in this area - don’t believe him. They do have heavy clothes you can borrow though.
Finally, the whole group needed a shower and change of clothes after Kawah Ijen, which is a basic need: everything will smell of sulphur + sweat from hiking, and you will have to sit in a van for another 7-8 hours! Since we had 1.5h between arriving at the hotel after the hike and departure, and it was well before checkout time, it seemed like a natural request to ask to take a shower before/after breakfast. Apparently it was not: Pierrick was rude towards us, cursed us in French and in English, practically shoved our breakfast plates in our faces, and told us to ‘let him do his job’. I’m glad that other customers like me don’t accept such behavior, because we finally talked some sense into him, and grudgingly he let us shower 😅. I hope he now includes this in all his Kawah Ijen overnight tours.

We were looking forward to this highlight of our Indonesia trip seeing an active volcano and the blue flames, but we turned out to be the worst spent days of the whole trip.

Travel time:
The travel time listed on the trip can never be the exact time. Even without any traffic it took as minimum 1.5x of the written time. But due to a national holiday & school holiday travel time went up from 8 hours to 19 hours on the first day and on the second and third from 4 hours to 9 hours each. We expected a heads up information about such specialty, but instead we got no information and even worst we were told by the boss he didn't know. Driver and tour guides told us different.

Weather:
Same for the weather situation. It was raining for 2 weeks straight. Boss told us he didn't know, but all other people told us different.

Tour guides:
At the Bromo Tour we had one tour guide with us. Due to rain, the ways being slippery and the darkness one girl of the group was too afraid to go further. The tour guide left her alone on top of the volcano without even talking to her. At Ijen the rain started to be even heavier which made the hike up very dangerous (said by the local tour guide). And even if we went up, we started the tour too late to see the blue flames or a sunrise. Btw it was days before we started the tour that the highlight (blue flames) cannot be seen due to the rain and the late hike up, which nobody told us either.

Food and accommodation:
Food is very very basic, meaning you get the cheapest fried rice and noodles. There was rather no fresh food and for breakfast we got eggs and a toast. The advertised local food was just the cheapest food to get in Indonesia (even in our jungle tour we had better food). Accommodations are also the cheapest of all. We looked it up and the ones we stayed in costed 10EUR per 2person room per night. The question arise where all the money we paid for the trip was spent on.

Operator:
Of course for weather conditions and traffic the tour operator is not to blame, nevertheless we expected a more active communication approach before the tour or at least a cooperative and honest during the trip. He could not understand our frustration and blamed us because we did not hike up Ijen. Once he told us everything is safe, the next sentence he talked about all the dangerous things that could happen. At the one hand he didn't know about traffic, weather, etc., next moment the tells us we can be happy because the tours the days/weeks before took even longer than us. We felt really uncomfortable during the trip and where just happy to be back in Bali.

Even after two months now looking back to the trip I am disappointed how the operator only looked on the profit he could make and not on the guests he es accommodating (or at least he is giving that feeling to myself and the rest of our tour). I expected different after reading all the good comments here.

As stated many times before your confirmation in all the documents communicated, this is an adventure that will, in some ways, probably be outside your comfort zone. Wanting to visit volcanoes means accepting certain uncertainties and unforeseen events. In very high season, of course, not only in Indonesia but all over the world, travel and weather conditions cannot be totally determined in advance. To take just your blame for the weather: How can you blame us for the weather? With another company, they would have had good weather? At the very least, you could have made it clear that we provide rain jackets to protect you in case of rain, free of charge. As far as the food is concerned, many travelers thank us for the variety, the freshness and our search for variety. Which still doesn't seem to be enough for you. Perhaps we should be offering a "gastronomic tour of Java's active craters" variant, rather than an adventure for travellers who want to discover volcanoes first and foremost (which you make no mention of in your diatribe). Of course we respect everyone's feedback, but after reading your post, the whole team and all the other travellers who have read it agree that you have probably made a comment that has nothing to do with us. I therefore graciously invite you to truly try our services.
