The Ghat has been named after AhilyaBai, the queen of Indore, who built the ghat as well as the main Vishwanath temple. Th ghat lies about a 5-10 minute walk from the Dasashwamedh Ghat towards Harishchandra ghat.

Ahilyabai Ghat has been named in the honor of the warrior queen Ahilyabhai Holkar of Indore who actually built it in 1778. She also built a number of temples and spiritual residences throughout the city of Varanasi..

Ahilyabai Ghat has the distinction of being the first ghat named in honor of a person. The best time to visit the Ghats is in the morning when devotees and Indian worshipers take a holy dip in the river to cleanse themselves of sins in hope of attaining moksha..or salvation.

This ghat is dedicated to rani ahilyabai holkar the queen of indore who also built the famous Vishwanath temple in bananas that has immense followers and devotees..
This ghat apparently is one of the first to emerge and has the usual by standers, people gazing at ganges...the yoga instructors ..disciples ..saints ..old people precariously perching on the staircase to take a holy dip in the water . Etc etc .
Not as famous as assign daswamedh of course ..but neverthelss..it is a Continous ghat from the territory of daswamedh as u walk further .
We observed the ghat from our boat ride and got a low down on all ghats and it's importance through our oarsmen.
I intend spending more quality time at the ghats next time ..though this one was for 2 days .
Somehow ..this city is so mesmerizing that 3 days is not enough ..just to soak it all in ..

Must visit

This is one of the more prominent Ghats in Varanasi which we saw during our boat ride on Ganges. The Ghat was built by the Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore who was a patron of many Hindu Temples. She is credited with the first Ghat in Varanasi being named after a person.

I don´t know why but people prefer bathing at this ghat than the others nearby like Manmandir and Dasaswamedh ghat. Even so it was not so croweded in the morning .

The ghat was rebuilt by Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore. It was earlier called Kevalgiri ghat. She had also built the Kashi Viswanath temple. The place attracts devotees in the wee hours when to take a dip in the Ganges.

There is a great chai stall run by an English speaking local lady beneath the brahma temple here. Grab a chai at 6am sit down and watch the old world materialise in front of you. Some interesting local characters conduct their morning rituals and ablutions here. It's getting hot in Varanasi so the shade of the chai stall is much welcomed.
