We were visiting Varanasi in February for official work and took time out to visit some important places of interest. We spotted this interesting place, which is closed to public for prayers etc as it has been taken over by INTACH (Indian National Trust for Art, Culture and Heritage) for renovation and restoration work.

It is located near JHV mall in Cantonment area of Varanasi. This is by far the oldest known church in the city and oldest standing garrison church in South Asia. The church is locally known as Church of England and is 200 year old. It was established by Rev George Weatly, an English Officer, in 1810. The church has a glorious history as Queen Elizabeth II of England visited the church in 1960. It used as a place of worship by British Army and other members of European Community at that time. Currently, it is maintained by The Indian National Trust for Art, Culture & Heritage (INTACH).
Now that is history. If I come to the present day I must say that this is one of the most beautiful and well maintained churches in Varanasi. Though Varanasi is a predominant Hindu dominated city the residents are very secular and do not hesitate to pray and visit the various Mosques, Churches and Gurudwaras either. As a resident of Varanasi I am floored by this architectural wonder.

One of the oldest church in Varanasi, known as Church of England due to its architectural charm of almost 200 years. It was a place of worship used and constructed by Indian Army and now a good tourist destination

Great nice church with modern and entertaining museum that summarizes the most important stories of the bible by using figures, texts and music. People are really friendly here. The spoken texts in the museum are only in Hindi.
