Serene Tranquil - Relive Buddha Ashoka and their relics.
Sarnath is a place located 10 kilometres north-east of Varanasi near the confluence of the Ganges and the Varuna rivers in Uttar Pradesh. The deer park in Sarnath is wherein, circa 528 BCE, at 35 years of age, Gautama Buddha taught his first sermon after attaining enlightenment at Bodh Gaya. Buddha mentioned Sarnath as one of the four places of pilgrimage his devout followers should visit. The attractions Chaukhandi Stupa was built as a terraced temple during 7th & 8th centuries where Buddha & his first disciples met. Govardhan, the son of Raja Todar Mal, modified the stupa to its present shape by building the octagonal tower to commemorate the visit of Humayun, the Mughal ruler. The Dhamek Stupa The Dharmarajika Stupa The Ashokan pillar The ruins of the ancient Mulagandha Kuty Vihara mark the place where the Buddha spent his first rainy season. The Dharma Chakra Jina Vihar, a massive monastery and living quarters for monks The famous Lion Capital of Ashoka, which miraculously survived its 45-foot drop to the ground (from the top of the Ashokan pillar), and became the State Emblem of India and national symbol on the flag of India. The museum also houses the original 5th-century CE sandstone sculpture of Buddha Preaching his First Sermon, as well as the Kumaradevi inscription Tourist attractions unrelated to Buddhism and spirituality in Sarnath include the Sarnath Deer Park and Fish Canal, and the Sarnath Turtle Breeding and Rehabilitation Centre.

    Tranquil and serene
This little town is almost in the outskirts of the city and dotted with several Buddhist temples, archaeological parks, and a very nice small museum. Karan recommended us this place, and trust me, it was a good decision. He explained to us the basics of Buddhism, and we roamed around. It was a fabulous day.

    Don't miss this site!
It's a wonderful Buddhist historical site where Buddha gave his first sermon. The sculptures in the museum are second to none. I highly recommend visiting here. There isn't a toilet at the ruins only at the museum. Is a very tranquil reprise from the Hindu sites in Varanasi.

    An important historical place
Sarnath main compound,Sarnath museum, Buddha statue and Jain tirthankar place are places to visit at this area. First directly go to museum. Than Sarnath main complex , guide charges was very high 2000 rs here(don’t know why you may try) so we avoided hiring here. A guide followed us and showed only Buddha statue and said that’s only place and charged 100rs. He take us to some handloom shop than and vanished after taking money. So I said to directly go to museum and then ruins. It’s large compound and will take almost 2 hours. Ashoka pillar base and stupa is main thing here. Go to Jain temple than Buddha statue on last.

A must visit for history buffs
It takes about 30-45 mins from Benaras to reach the Sarnath site and Museum. The visit to the site takes about 60-90 mins and the museum takes 30-45 mins. The excavation sites are very well presented and the entire location has information and details at each site (you don't require a guide unless one likes listening to stories about the site :) ) The museum is small but has many artefacts to see. It is closed on Fridays.

Adventures in Varanasi & Sarnath with Pappu
We were welcomed at Varanasi airport by Pappu who was our driver and guide for 3 days. Very kind, available, patient, knowledgeable and most importantly punctual , in addition he is an amazing driver: with his helicopter (tuk tuk) he will take you everywhere you wish, including shopping places and restaurants. Pappu knows everything and will recommend places according to your needs. Overall Sarnath and its Buddhist temples were very interesting , however I would suggest to enjoy Varanasi ghats and atmospheric alleys rather than visiting its outskirts, as you will take loads of time to move around Varanasi traffic and it's not really worth it if you have limited time. Pappu703@yahoo.com is his e-mail im case you need to visit Sarnath and Varanasi like us. Thank you India ❤️

    Sarnath-- Varanasi and more
Hi I recently completed my 4 day trip to varanasi(Feb 7th to 11th). Me, my wife and my 6 yr old daughter had stayed at Hotel rivatas. I was quite confused how to cover Varanasi and what will be the cheapest way. I had initally planned to book a 2 wheeler BUT lucklly didn't choose that as very difficult to drive in the hectic and congested varanasi roads Fortunately, I met a tuk-tuk driver Mr.Raj Jaiswal(Ph 90055 41343), One of the most honest person I met.As my daughter is just 6 year old so we had to make freuqent trips back to the hotel He was more than willing to walk with me to the temple to see if the arrangements for Puja can be made or not. He charged Rs 1500/day and he was available from Morning 2:30 ( As i planned for the Mangla Aarti ) to Night 9 pm. We had booked his tuk tuk services from 8th to 11th feb Now coming to Sarnath We visited Sarnath on 9th and 11th, What an amazing place for my daughter to know about Indian history and Buddha;s histrory We took help of a local guide which Raj arranged for Rs 200 and he joined us to all the nearby places in Sarnath(Dhamek Stupa,Thai temple,Chaukand stupa) I also bought the Tibetian Music Bowl and my wife bought some lovely handbags at a good bargained price( as opposed to normal trend of getting commision from them) which was helped by Raj . More than just a driver Raj was a great tourist guide too showing a lot of temples like the Mani temple , Baba bhairav temple which are not mentioned in most of the blogs. He took us to all the places to try the best delicacies that was on my list.

    Clean , green and serene
This was one of the nicest places I have visited in India . It is beautifully maintained and a place of quiet serenity. The slight issue is with the ticket purchase in the adjacent museum. One needs to scan a QR code but this didn’t work on our phone and there is no other option for buying. We were advised ( by security!) to ask a tout to scan and pay for our tickets and pay him double!! As the price of a ticket is quite low this wasn’t a problem but surely one should be able to get tickets by paying at the counter .

Sarnath is the site of the first sermon where Buddha taught about life and death. Nowadays there are just ruins and a impressive remains of Dhamek stupa.
There is a standard entrance fee for adults, kids goes free. Allow at least 1,5 hours for lounging and walking, more if you want to meditate under the stupa.

We visited Sarnath near Varanasi in November 2022.
The temples, Japanese, Srilankan, Korean are worth a visit. The Main Stupa where Buddha gave his first sermon is also nice.
The highlight of the Sarnath visit was the museum. All statues and artifacts are nicely lit and displayed. Here youu can see the oroginal top of the Ashoka Pillar with the four lion heads which is 2500 years old a sight not to be missed.
You should book tickets on line prior to your visit as ticjkets at yhe museum is through QR Code which is quite frustrating for senior citizens.

Situated about 10 kilometres from Varanasi but due to traffic conditions the travel time maybe upto one hour depending on the time of the day.
Since the entire area is open to the sky it will be better to visit in morning hours during summer.
The first stop is Chaukhandi Stupa which is one kilometre before the main Dhamek Stupa. The entry ticket is Rs 20 per person which has to be bought on line as the ticket window was closed when we visited. You walk along the garden path around the Stupa and can not go upto the Stupa. The site was deserted with only a few visitors mainly young couples sitting in the garden under shady trees. Car can be parked on either side of the entry gate.
The next stop half kilometre ahead is a garden where the entry is free. When you reach, you will be surrounded by a number of men who say that they are local weavers and will act as guides on a payment of Rs 50. The garden has a stone statue of standing Buddha, a bodhi tree, and a small budhha temple. There is a parking in front of the garden.
Once the garden visit is over, the guide (weaver) will take you through the parking to a building where the products made by local weavers are sold. There are sarees of various varieties which they say are being sold at 40-50% discount from the market but one should check before buying.
From the parking you can walk to the main garden a short distance away. Here also online ticket costs Rs 20 per person.
There is a museum nearby which is closed on Friday.
The garden has the Dhamek Stupa, Ashoka pillar, and a Jain temple.
The entire visit will take around two hours.

We visited Sarnath while staying in Varanasi. The 30 minute trip on our electric auto-rickshaw (tuk-tuk) through the cacophony and chaos of Varanasi traffic is a great way to see the intoxicating vibrant life of Varanasi. It is like the Indian travel experience on fast forward.

Sarnath includes the site where the Buddha made his first sermon to his five disciples and where the first Sangha was created in the seventh century BC. The stunningly beautiful Ashoka's pillar, (chosen as the national symbol of India) is in the museum there. The Bodhi tree there is grown from a sapling two generations from the original Bodhi tree in Bodhigaya whre Buddha attained enlightenment.

As well as the 2000 year old Bhuddist stupas, there is a Jain temple, the deer park that dates from the time of Buddha, the excellent archeological museum and various Buddhist institurions and buldings. It is easy to pick up a government trained tourist guide for the Stupas and museum for about Rs, 800, Money worth spending as the history is rich and fascinating. You can easily spend between 2 and 5 hours in Sarnath depending on your level of interest in history.

Our day was made particularly interesting and enjoyable by our auto-rickshaw driver, Raju. He shared so much local information with his excellent English and it was great to be able to ask questions and find answers about the city and its people.
It was a fascinating chance for us to to learn about the local politics, culture and day to day life of the people of of Sarnath and Varanasi. The sort of questions that you normally leave a place wondering were answered by Raju.

If you want a safe, reliable and reasonably priced driver then we are sure Raju won't mind us sharing his number: +91 79049 07798

Sarnath is one of the most underrated tourist spots I have ever visited. There are 2 elements to visit in Sarnath - the museum and the Buddist site. The Buddhist site is an open-air walkway that allows views of an ancient Buddhist monastery, which once housed the Buddha himself. The site houses the huge 210m stupas, votive stupas, remains of the Ashokan pillar and many other attractions that have survived millennia.

Part2: The Museum, houses the Indian emblem's original sculptures and many other stone inscriptions from the ancient era. I would recommend getting a guide for both these sites, you can hire one government guide who will take you to both. Tickets are available online and I recommend morning visits before it gets sunny. There is.a lot to observe and take notes of in these sites.

It's such a shame that tourists who visit this place without a guide will be looted. We were so excited to visit this Archaeological Buddhist site. The way of buying a ticket was either to do it online or you had to scan a QR for ticket payment. But as we were a tourist who had just arrived and we didn't have mobile data access (as Nepalese people are not allowed to buy a local sim card with a Nepalese passport, which is a shame) or UPI. So, we asked for an option but the guards suggested we pay 50-100 rupees per person extra to the local guy to enter. We didn't want to be part of this scamming technique to enter these heritage sites so we went up to cops sitting nearby to seek help as we really wanted to visit Sarnath. But, the cops sitting nearby defamed me when he got to know I was from Nepal. he not only me but my country Nepal and all the Nepalese. I cannot even publicly mention what he told me about my country Nepal. I would have beaten anyone for defaming me and my country, but as it was a policeman I didn't want any trouble during my travel with my mom. So, we decided to skip the plan of visiting Sarnath. Not only me and my mom were deprived of visiting Sarnath, but there were a few other foreign visitors from Sweden and France who faced the same problem.

Even to enter the Sarnath museum there was an online system, we understand India wants to go fully digitalized. But on the monument's site, there should be the option of a ticket counter for foreign tourists who have issues buying tickets online. Tourists come to visit this beautiful country and monuments from all around the world but due to lack of access to buy the ticket they are deprived to enter the heritage sites and museums. One of the domestic tourists a young gentle guy (Arun Chauhan, who had come from Delhi) paid for our museum tickets, I appreciate his help though we couldn't visit Sarnath we could visit the Museum because of his generous act.

Only about 10 km from Varanasi, this historic town is a good attraction for the tourists. It is very clean and the environment is very charming. There are quite a few sights to see, of which the Bamyan Buddha is the most spectacular. The eighty-one feet tall statue of the Buddha is bound to impress any mind.
