Nice little temple devoted to Lord Buddha set in a sprawling green lawn with shady trees. It is always a picnic here.

During our Varanasi journey we visited for a day trip to Sarnath .
It was a memorable trip indeed !
Sarnath is about 10 km north-east of Varanasi and takes about 30 mins by a Tuk – Tuk (₹400 return trip, including wait) or Taxi (₹200 one-way; waiting time extra) .
We hired a Tuk – Tuk and started in the morning after breakfast from our hotel.

Our first stop was at Tibetan temple ……..
The Tibetan Temple at Sarnath is a pinnacle of Buddhism.
The LHADHAN CHENMO Tibetan Monastery, also known as the Tibetan temple monastery was built in 1955 at Sarnath and is maintained by LHADHAN CHOTRUL MONLAM CHENMO TRUST(see the trustee board in my picture).

It is the first monastery and temple to be built in India by His Holiness Dalai Lama, XIV.
The entrance of the monastery is flanked by carvings of two lions at the main entrance.
Once you enter the complex, there is a light pink coloured stupa. It has been built by the Tibetans to show their gratitude to the Indian Government for granting them asylum in India.

The main temple is beyond this stupa.
The Tibetan Temple is acclaimed for its Thangksa (Tibetan Buddhist works of art) and frescoes, which are found on the dividers and roofs. 😍😍😍

One can find series of prayer wheels which release paper scrolls with chants marked on then when one rotates them in the clockwise direction..
There are some beautiful frescoes adorning the walls of the temple.

Inside, It has got hundreds of miniature Buddhas in glass shelf. There is a big picture of HH Dalai Lama.
There is a huge statue of Sakyamuni (another form of Buddha), in a resting position ....... All looks so beautiful !
😍😍😍

If you are a solo traveler and you like to go to the Peace Flowers places, then you can spend some time here.

The monk sitting inside the temple during our visit was very accommodating and had a nice chat with us.
The monastery has got many room where Tibetan monks can stay free of cost. Sometime these rooms are given to visitors also at reasonable cost subject to availability.

Over-all, it was a great trip for us to visit this Tibetan temple at Sarnath .

I strongly recommend this place in your Sarnath itinerary ! 👍👍

Peace is what you feel when one visits this temple built on the model of a temple thought to be on the archeaological site nearby . It has gardens for people to meditate or just enjoy with friends and family .

Who would have thought that this temple is only 65 years old. It is in keeping with the rest of the archealogical site and isn't at all out of place.

Well worth a visit.

There are many Buddhist Temples in Sarnath, one of the 4 most important holy places of Buddhism, and Tibetan Temple is one of them.
I think there is a lot of confusion regarding Tibetan Temple on this forum. Most of the picture and reviews posted in this forum are that of Mulgandha Kuti Vihar. The Tibetan Temple is different one(see pictures).
It is located close to the main market. It was constructed in 1955 is maintained by LHADHAN CHOTRUL MONLAM CHENMO TRUST(see picture). It has got hundreds of miniature Buddhas in glass shelf. There is a big picture of HH Dalai Lama. Behind it there is a big Sakyamuni another form of Buddha(see picture). The monastery has got many room where Tibetan monks can stay free of cost. Sometime these rooms are given to visitors also at reasonable cost subject to availability.

Sarnath is a town where all religions are tolerated. From Hindus, Muslims to Buddhists, they all have a place to worship here. This in particular is of the Buddhist lineage. His HH Dalai Lama frequents here for lectures.
