- Simon HBirmingham, United Kingdom37 contributionsThe perfect ghat to experience a ceremony of lights in Varanasi! The perfect ghat to experience during a trip or stay in Varanasi. Arrive around 5pm to get a good spot by the Ganges to watch the aarti ‘ceremony of lights’ that starts around 7pm and finishes around 9pm. The perfect spot as sun sets and day turns into night.Visited September 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 1, 2023
- Sudha P13 contributionsBoat ride on the GangesWe went for the early morning boat ride on the Ganges. The ghats look ethereal at this time of morning. We reached Assi ghat at 5. 15 am, saw the beautiful Ganga Aarti before we took the boat ride. We paid Rs 100 per person for the boat trip. Don’t pay more. If you wish you can also participate in the free well being and yoga session at the ghat.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 23, 2023
- Andrea438Milan, Italy530 contributionsSubah-e-Banaras held at Assi Ghat at sunrise. Before dawn, Subah-e-Banaras is held at Assi Ghat. It is very interesting because, beyond the ceremony, it will give you the opportunity to see the sunrise from one of the main Gaths. The program includes a religious part "Ganga Aarti" which begins the day, followed by a session of traditional Indian music and ends with a yoga session led by a master, in which you can freely participate.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 18, 2023
- vasccuKolkata (Calcutta), India2 contributionsSunrise or sunset a place to watch the Ganga AratiIf the spiritual you is seeking affirmation few experiences come close to an Aarati. The ones at Assi Ghat are truly awesome. Less crowded than the ones at DasAshwamedha Ghat; the Assi Ghat Arati is more enjoyable in as much as you may feel a stronger connection if you are older and don’t seek solace in large crowds!! Truly a place to visit on your Benaras itinerary. Post the Arati stop off Aum Cafe for a non Indian bite. Quite popular with those who are craving bread, sandwiches pasta and pizza!!Visited March 2024Traveled with friendsWritten March 4, 2024
- Anuja_KothariMumbai, India72 contributionsGo for morning AartiPl go for the morning Ganga Aarti at Assi Ghat - it is generally around 5.15 to 5.30 am. Its the most beautiful and blissful experience. The crowd is much lesser than the evening Aarti. Also, you get a nice close view of the Aarti. As the Aarti gets over, you can see the sunrise, its splendid. After the Aarti there is live traditional music. Post that there is yoga session. You should take the boat ride around that time, you will get to view the most mesmerizing view of the Ghat ! Post that there is a small cart fellow outside the ghat selling the most fresh and yummy Idly and dosa for breakfast!!Visited March 2024Traveled with familyWritten March 11, 2024

- Krishnan RHayward, California230 contributionsBeautiful view of Ganges RiverWe stayed 5 minutes walk to this area. Aasi Ghat has a lot to see in terms of walking around the historical architectural buildings & Ganges River. Came here to see the Ganga Aarthi at night which was spectacular. Also came here one morning at 8AM to do some sandhyavandanam (part of upanayanam). The venue we attended by our religious group for several days was not more than a 2-3 min walk. You can walk to Tulsi Ghat if you’re an active person like me and like climbing stairs. Overall a majestic place.Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 4, 2024

- Ankosh LathMumbai, India133 contributionsShould doMorning aarti happens at Assi Ghat (called Subah e Banaras). Can also do boating after aarti at Rs 50 per person. They bargain a lot for boating. I saw they also charged 200 bucks with someone. So be smart. It's a pleasure to see the morning sun rise at the aarti and boatingVisited September 2024Traveled with familyWritten September 17, 2024

Assi ghat is one of the most famous ghat in Varanasi. The early morning Ganga Aarti, shloka chanting and havan are absolutely divine. Most of the tourist come here in the morning and after Aarti take a boat ride to see beautiful sunrise and visit other prominent ghats. It is kept very clean and due to big sand bank, it appears like a beach. It is the only ghat which has got a jetty. The big boat Alaknanda also start from a nearby spot.
Worth visiting !!

This is the first ghat of ganga at Kashi(Varanasi). Actually varanasi got its name from two rivers - Varuna & Assi. Assi Ghat is at confluence of Ganga and Assi river. Varuna Ghat is the last. Ramcharit Manas has been composed at this Ghat by Tulsidas. A popular tourist attraction & Ganga Aarti is performed in evening which is attended by a large number of people. One of the clean Ghat in Varanasi.

We saw the evening Aarti Fire Purifying Ceremony, a lovely event. 30 minutes ritual put on by 12 monks each doing a co-ordinate ritual.
A great show at night with lots of lighting and chanting.

This is something you should not miss. The event is simply mesmerizing there are young girls from school who continuously reciting mantras and chants, in the front the aarti is performed and on one side Havan is performed. Anybody who has bathed is allowed to sit in the Havan. The view is amazing if you reach by 5:15 you get a comfortable seat on the stairs. and you see the night turn into morning the darkness turn to light right in front of ur eyes.

Assi ghat is the starting point for boating trips. Best time to visit is sunrise and sunset to witness Ganga Aarti.
Alaknanda river cruise is a new addition which provides unparalleled service. This is the best and the costliest option but worth giving a try.
Best way to reach is via cab or own car which can be parked at assi parking.

Lovely place to start your walk down the Ghat. There is a sunrise and sunset show both by donation to see. A peaceful place to sit and people watch.
Easy to access ask any Tuk Tuk driver to bring you here should be about 100 rupees from most of Varanasi.

Assi Ghat is a very calm and pleasant place to spend some time, and even to get hosted. Some nice restaurants. Being a foreigner, it's important to avoid some cheating boatman there, who try to charge 3 times more than the real price

Varanasi springs to life at dawn with the morning aarti at Assi Ghat. A Yoga session follows. There is always a carnival atmosphere here with folk dances and shows. Boats for a ride up and down the river are best taken from here, although they are available at all ghats.

Sir, while watching morning arati in Assi Ghat can one see sunrise too or for that one has to go to the opposite bank of the river?
Thank you in anticipation

Is Assi ghat easily accessible by Car? Can I get car parking space near to the Ghat? Can I take a boat ride upto Manikarnika ghat from Assi Ghat and comeback? How long it will take (minimum time please) and how much it could cost ? Your early response would help me plan my visit tomorrow morning.

Yes, Not only cars, but our own tempo traveller (on hire) was parked right beside ASSI ghat near the Alakananda cruise jetty. Boats are available from Assi ghat for various ride options - they charge around 300 bucks per head or 3K for whole boat - these are country boats with gensets and loud noise...so be prepared for smoke and noise too...although once sailing - these hardly matter cos the view mesmerizes all.

Which is the best location to stay in Varanasi?
Written January 5, 2019

Does anyone have a good hotel to indicate good price for money in Varanasi?
It can be in the Assi Ghat.
Thank you

Highly recommend this hotel "Hari Vilas" (you can check qualification on booking site). It is about 1.5 km from the main ghat (quiet and easy to get to the main ghat with a simple tricycle) but it is an excellent hotel and great restaurant too (very frequented by locals). I did not like Assi Ghat at all and is far from the center of attraction.
Good luck!

The aarti is performed here early morning 5 -530 a.m. under the Subah e Banars cultural and spiritual event. In winter timing may have changed. Please ask your Hotel or Guest House once you arrive in Banaras.
