    Durga Mata temple in Varanasi
The Durga Mata temple in Varanasi is a beautiful temple. It is a brick structure in red colour with a water body-Durga kund in the temple complex. The temple offers serene ambiance. Lot of monkeys are near temple and it is said that the monkeys guard the temple.

Its bright red exteriors and carvings caught my attention!
There is a big, wide open space infront of this temple for people to park their transports. It is less crowded unlike the other older temples we visited. The drill - leave our shoes and cameras at the Reception area before entering the temple. I caught a glimpse of the small golden idol being worshipped by the locals. We then went around the temple for some religious reason. On the way out, a huge white cow was blocking our way. My guide slightly shoved him to move, he got reprimanded by a local who was watching him.

Present augmented structure built by the famous queen , Rani Bhabani of Natore (now in Rajshahi of Bangladesh). She lived an austere personal life, and built hundreds of works for the good of her subjects. To Varanasi , she gave this Temple. The red color is most auspicious and associated with Goddess Durga, who is the warrior form of the spouse of Lord Shiva. The worship of Shiva and Parvati is Shaktism and all the lands east of this were under its sway. Originally dating from very ancient times, this is an important Temple of Durga who is also mentioned as the Adi Parashakti or Supreme formless monotheistic Power transcending all Gods and Matter- everything in the spiritiual and material world, past, present and future. One meditating on this from heart and achieving a spiritual liberation is free of all bonds.
The Temple has a fire-altar and beautiful image of Durga. Temple images are imbued with the spirit of the God, and in the case of Durga we must meditate on her transcendental form of pure power too, after seeing/worshipping the image. The Temple is in a ancient North India style called Nagara which started from Kushan times and is different from South Indian style.. (The color also reminiscent of brick color or terracotta used in Bengal.).Quarters for residence of priests household.

We have visited Durga Mata Temple on 20th of November. I have also visited earlier there in the month of July. It is really a place where your mind & soul get relaxed and you feel peace at your heart. Must visited place if you are going to Varanashi

There is an abandoned amusement park ride at the entrance.
The area around the Temple is dirty with trash. Yes this is India, but a Temple and it's surroundings shouldn't be disgusting,
Any are with water was stagnant and unappealing.
The monkey's come flying down the hillside when a local brings food. I wouldn't want to get near them.
This was the worst Temple we saw in 3 weeks in India.

Monkey temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga and was constructed in the 18th century by the Queen of Bengal as a center of devotion. The temple is known to be guarded by monkeys, which can be even fed by the devotees. It also has a kund that is known to be connected to Ganga, and its water is known to have therapeutic properties.

This temple is a must-visit place in Varanasi if you wish to seek the blessings of Goddess Durga, who is known to be the principal deity of this temple. The prayers and bhajans that are chanted in this temple make its aura extremely blissful.

The Durga temple is a beautiful ancient temple which is red in colour. It has a pond named the Durga kund beside it. Taking the darshan of Ma and sitting for sometime in the corridor is a beautiful feeling.

This temple is located at a distance of 12 Kms.from Varanasi Cantt railway station and situated in vicinity of famous Tulsi Manas Mandir .Local people call it Durga Kund temple, because the main sanctum of the temple is devoted to Goddess of power Ma Durga with a big rectangular pond (Kund ) on its right side, sharing its boundary . According to legend, statue of the Goddess was not made by any human, but appeared itself in this region. (Swambhu).Monkey temple is nickname for this temple. This name was given by foreign tourists, because groups of monkeys are usually seen, romping all around temple and have made their permanent settlement in the outer empty spaces. Temple is about 200 years old and was constructed by a queen from Bengal .It is painted in saffron red color, which is the color of Goddess Durga .There is one spire at the peak of the main sanctum with multiple small spires, some attached with spiraling pinnacles. In front side of the temple, there are many flower shops and on Left Side is a small shopping complex, selling coconut, red color chunri and some other items offered to Goddess. Opening time of the temple is 7 AM to 9 PM. large number of devotees visit this temple every day, but -9 days festival of Navratri has special significance ,which attract huge crowd and you may have to wait 1-2 hours to get a glimpse of Goddess. . Pond is made up of red stone and steps, reach up to the bottom. Water, is very dirty has dark green color. Even then you may see many devotees taking ritual bath in it. Pond has special significance because of Nag Panchami festival. At that time large number of people gathers here to watch the enactment of Lord Vishnu reclining on the bed of a statue serpent. . You are not allowed to take camera, since photography is prohibited inside the temple area. After entering inside, you have to step down into a gallery surrounding the sanctum (Parikrama path), then ascend up few stairs to reach at the main sanctum. Face of the Goddess Durga ,is of glittering gold color and has very impressive look. . WORD OF CAUTION – When I went through the reviews posted by the travelers. I found that few have mistaken it for Sankat mochan temple and some for New Kashi Viswanath temple of BHU.They have posted the pictures of those temples in the Tripadvisor picture gallery, which is very confusing to other travelers since it is not related with this temple at all.

About 20 minutes by auto-rickshaw from the Varanasi ghats, the Durga temple, known locally as the monkey temple due to the huge monkey population, is dedicated to the Hindu goddess Durga. Next to what was formerly a water tank -- it was dry when we visited-- the temple grounds were fascinating, albeit not "clean" by most standards. Multiple small shrines line the interior and several rooms were filled with chanting followers of Durga. A line of priests with "magical" abilities sat against one long wall, ready to dispense their special power. The temple is red sandstone and indeed, the holy "red" color was in abundance, as many people were lined up to see the inner chamber and had the applied a special bright redish/ochre tikka dot to the forehead from wet "paint" off one particularly auspicious wall. The place is full of monkeys and you can buy special offerings on-site to feed the animals (who looked a little wild, albeit well fed). No shoes, purses or camers are allowed and the grounds were not clean, so bring extra socks and dress modestly. We did take a guide, and the visuals were enough to make for a very interesting visit. There is an entrance fee (100Rs?) and we checked our bags without incident. Make sure you take your own transport because the temple is not near to main streets. We liked this temple a bit more than others because it was less formal, with families interacting, side services and --of course-- lots of monkey activity.
