This stupa is the first, which one comes across, as one nears Sarnath. It is located on a raised mound within a garden and is made up of red bricks. it is under the care and maintenance of the Archaeological survey of India. It is said that Buddha met his first disciples here after his enlightenment.

Chaukhandi Stupa is an important Buddhist stupa in Sarnath, located 8 kilometres from Cantt Railway Station Varanasi,
It is a lofty mound of brick, whose square edifice is surrounded by an octagonal tower. Beautiful architecture stupa, assembled with old red bricks. One can find many steps however they are too small to walk/climb on. There is a so called park around however this park looks more like lovers park with couple sitting in awkward position in bloody every corner. This stupa or stup is considered very holy among Buddhist. Hence, it's worth to visit and take blessing.

The chaukhandi stupa is a very unique stupa as its four armed. The brick structure was built in 4th-5th century as a place where Buddha probably met his five disciples. There is an octagonal structure on top which was added 16th century to commemorate the visit of Humayun.
Great views of Sarnath from the top.

Just 5 minutes walk down the road from the other sights in Sarnath. This octagonal stupa sits high on a brick mound, set back slightly from the road. It is free to enter and you can walk up to the Chaukhandi Stupa on top. Originally built in the 4thC AD to mark the site where Buddha met his first disciples. The octagonal tower was added in the 16th C by the Mughal emperor Akbar.

Really? 300 rupees to enter to see one not especially large stupa. The same price as the main Sarnath site. Take a photo from outside maybe, it is not worth entering

Chaukhandi Stupa, Sarnath

The Chaukhandi Stupa was originally built as a terraced temple during the Gupta period between the 4th to 6th centuries. Later, Govardhan – the son of a local king modified the stupa to its present form by erecting an octagonal Mughal tower surrounding the square edifice of the stupa.
Presently, Chaukhandi Stupa stands as a high earthen mound covered with an edifice made of bricks and topped by an octagonal tower.

It looks pretty big from a distant but up close, with workers...working, it is impressive how large it is. You can't go in so once around the outside is really all there is to do

My wife and I visited the Chaukhandi Stupa during a trip to Sarnath whilst visiting Varanasi during a tour of northern India. Located about 10km from Varanasi, Sarnath is a Buddhist pilgrimage centre, as it is where Buddha gave his first sermon in around 550 BC. The Stupa is a massive, somewhat delipidated ruin where Buddha was reunited with the 5 disciples after they had deserted him.
It is next to the main road about 1km south of the main site in Sarnath and is worth stopping by on the way in to read the historical placard and to take a couple of photographs.
