This ancient mosque is well worth a visit. Be aware that shoes have to be removed (socks can be worn) and women will have to wear a long gown provided at the entrance.
The mosque has one main undercover area and it contains some lovely architectural features. Nice photo ops. Two tall minarets tower above this section.
The main area, though, is a very large open area with a water area in the middle. When we visited long carpets were being laid out in preparation for a later prayer session.
It wasn't quite what I was expecting of a mosque because of the large open area but well worth a visit.

A very beautiful mosque in a square that recalls, in a smaller and much less decorated way, that of Isfahan.
Inside there is a small mausoleum.
When you go to Fathepur you will find it there.
We visited it without a guide, but by reading articles on the internet.

My wife and I visited the Jama Masjid as part of a Golden Triangle tour with the TripaDeal group in February.
It was very interesting, but you must remove your shoes, women have to wear long gowns and men, if wearing shorts, have to wear a "wrap". These are hired at the entrance.
It has very interesting architecture and was very busy, with a few different entrances.
Well worth visiting the largest mosque in India.

Seems that many people didn't check where they uploaded their photos.
Jama Masjid in Delhi is big and looks great. Jama Masjid in Agra, which is close to the train station looks nothing like it, yet many people have added photos from the Delhi one, and even photos from Fatehpur Sikri which is 25km from Agra. It's a mix bag, better look soemwhere else for true photos.

I went to see fatehpur sikri post my visit to Agra along with my wife. Moment we crossed the Toll barrier for fatehpur sikri , My car was stopped at 1 Km before the entrance by 7 men and they said we cannot go forward.
When I asked the reason for the same they said you will have to pay 10 Rupees as Local Municipality fees. I gave them 10 rupees as I was suspecting a Loot in the mid of the road ... I tried to over run them but they surrounded our car.....
Then I said, if the fees is there then there shall be some board from the Govt to which they said the board is yet to be placed.....
Then other guys asked me that we shall hire them as guide for 200 rupees , upon seeing their ID card I could see that the card was not from the Ministry of Tourism.....
I pointed same to them but one of them tried to sit in our car.... I said you can come on your bike..... Then they allowed me to proceed for the main gate..... When I was entering the gate another set of 6-7 people said you have to again pay the municipality fees to which I denied and went on the main gate.....
I couldn't see any Police there and saw only a G4S guard... I told him the entire story ... when he saw the guides he told me that they would Loot us if we go with them as they are not authenticated people and they try to target couples..... I wanted to see fatehpur sikri and hence gave them 100 rupees and told them to leave us as we dont want to hire any guide.....
G4S guide asked us to leave as they would not agree and harm us.... I tried to look in for police but no one was there.....
My car was still ON and I suddenly turned my car and headed towards agra again without seeing anything......
MY IDEA OF SHARING THIS IS TO BEWARE PEOPLE NOT TO GO ALONE AS THEY WILL TRY TO FOOL YOU AROUND , STOP YOUR WAY AND MAY EVEN LOOT YOU IF CONDITION PERSISTS.... IF YOU HAVE TO VISIT THEN VISIT IN GROUPS...
I WONDER AS AN INDIAN I HAD SUCH A TORRID EXPERIENCE , HOW WOULD FOREIGNERS FEEL ON THE SAME......
PLUS POLICE NOT BEING PRESENT AT THE HERITAGE SITE IS A BIG POINTER AT THE SECURITY OF THE VISITORS..... STATE GOVT AND CENTRAL GOVT SHALL LOOK INTO THIS.... ELSE FATEHPUR SIKRI WILL LOSE ITS CHARM....

Our tour guide took us there, really enjoyed it - one of the oldest mosque in Agra I believe. The old man in charge of the mosque gave us a tour, interesting building, a bit run down to be honest but great experience.

This place has two complexes in the historical site. One is occupied by local people who claim to be descendants of a chisti ...? holy man. This is an independent courtyard with Buland Darwaza being the only attraction- with Bee hives since time of Akbar.! This is under the care of local Wakf board (local Muslim clerics?). Since they know that no one would other wise come in this section of the Fateh pur Sikri , they let loose students from there madrasa down the hill to solicit Tourists and misguidedly take them here. As soon as we parked our Coach Van, we were surrounded by these people and got us convinced by showing phony ID cards. After wasting an hour with this young boy who claimed to be a certified Guide ( initially showed his ID with printed rate of 499 Rs but agreed for 150 rs.) we questioned him about Jodhabais palace and Birbals palace etc. , he tried to discourage and even lied that we cant go there !. Any how he forced us to buy things and even put offerings to chistis dargah.... any how we came out of this complex - which I will absolutely avoid.
Then we realized the main complex was to the left of this first complex. We walked upto there and were very nicely greeted by ASI ( Archeological Survey of India Officials) and we bought tickets to the real Akbar Palace and loved that part - saw panch mahal, Birbals palace , akbars bed , Jodhabais palace , sheesh mala....amazing ...!
ASI guys told that they even dont want to mess with the other complex as it is under control of locals who shamelessly are exploiting the tourists.
After the tour of the main complex we came down the hill and went to Tourist Rest area by UP Tourism on the right hand side ....were very hungry and very reasonable good food.
Later found out from other family members about the same issues and how they were harrassed by Madrasa folks -----they never knew that real fatehpur sikri complex is on the Right side and not the courtyard/ graveyard with Buland darwaza.
My advise- 1. PArk your car/vehicle at the parking place - u need to take Bus ride up to the fort - costs 5Rs per person - its 3 min trip....govt run bus....donot take any other transport asthey are all run by locals of !st complex.
2. Go to main site -on the right - the real place !!!
3. If u r brave and have time then check out the first complex ....
4. loved the real deal !!!!!

BEWARE TOUTS.
The "guides" will prime you to enter the tomb and spout nonsense about how 3 wishes will be granted if you buy cloth to put over the tomb.
It is an elaborate scam.
Once you are taken to a slightly secluded spot then the games start.
A chap will be sitting on the floor and weave a tale about the mystic and his power to grant children which he apparently did for King Akbar 500 years ago.
Then he will show you frilly cloth which he will care fully avoid telling you the price of.
Then he will take out the biggest one, get you to bow down to it and then ask for RS 5100.
By now if you have your wits about you, you should leave ... However i made the mistake of saying that i cant afford the big cloth and i will pay for the smaller one instead.
That cost me Rs2100.
The priests or however they are inside want money for everything .
If you arent particularly religious then give it a miss.
As for me i shudder to thing what will be the state of this as a tourist destination in a few years time because i fervently hope people will take heed of my advice.
As an Indian tourist i consider my self to be reasonably savvy and i predict that if numbers fall the touts are only going to get more aggressive.
I hope the

We hired an all day taxi from the train station in Agra and we had to convince him to take us here. He was the kind of taxi driver you hope you don't get: took us to stores and tried to take us to restaurants that ate into our time. At Fatehpur Sikri, he overcharged us for parking and led us into the hands of his guide friends who overcharged us for a tuk tuk ride into the main site. As written elsewhere FS consists of two sites:1. The mosque 2. the city.
Let me share the other annoyances:
The mosque is free, but you will have people demanding you leave your shoes outside for a fee( you can just carry them).
You will be besieged by government licensed touts who will tell you all sorts of lies including that they will get you into the complex for free (as above the mosque is free, but the ghost city is not). At the mosque, different touts will try and tell you that the government requires you to hire a guide. Unless you have a guide of you own, you will have to deflect these people both in the mosque and in the city. They will come up to you and just start talking, demanding to know where you are from and then talking about the site. They will follow you around until they give up, at which point another tout will take their place.
Keep in mind that there is much that is not known about the city, but these liars will spin lie after lie. Telling them to leave you alone is exhausting and quite frankly they ruined our experience here. I think the only people who were left alone were the large tour groups who had knowledgeable and experienced guides who weren't BS'ing. If you are on your own (I hate tours) you will be harassed from start to finish.
It is really a shame because the site and mosque have so much to offer. The government does a really bad job at policing this kind of unwanted behavior. They should either crack down on this, or turn it over to private hands. Overall I'm glad we saw the site, but I'm not sure it was worth the headache. Definitely the worst run site we saw in all of our India travels.

What do you mean by camera charges? One has to pay for bringing his own camera and taking pictures there?
Written January 8, 2015
Yes. There is a charge to take pictures. Buy a ticket *before* entering and keep the ticket as there are people looking for picture takers and will insist on your ticket
