I would recommend the Nilgiri Mountain Heritage Railway atleast once especially if you have kids along. My kid has never been on train and he loved the experience. We booked 1FC from Ooty to Coonoor and return, our train coach from Ooty to Coonoor was dated and worn out however the return train coach was slightly more spacious and clean.

Definitely a good experience but very very slow, to avoid this lengthy journey of 5 hours to ooty, we took a cab to coonoor and catch the train from coonoor to ooty which takes only 1 hour.

This train journey is highly recommended and preferably the entire journey from mettupalayam to ooty. The train is world heritage in true sense transporting you to the time of steam engine. The combination of the views of Nilgiri biosphere reserve from the train makes the experience priceless. The entire journey is manned by mountain railway staff and they have halts at few excellent view points. This journey should not be missed at any cost and will serve as highlight of entire ooty trip.
