This is a revered Murugan temple. It is one the six abodes, the Arupadai Veedugal. It is in a forested hilly area in the Alagarmalai area. Easily accessible from Madurai. Architecturally not very impressive and much of the current structure appears to be of recent origin. It can be combined with a visit to Alagar Koil.

This is the second temple that we covered in our Aarupadaiveedu trip from Chennai. We reached this temple at around 11 AM on 24 December 2019. There was a moderate crowd. We were able to park our ertiga without any issues. Had a nice Dharsan in less than 30 mins, then went to Rakkai theertham which took another 30 mins. There was occasional drizzling during this trip which made it even more memorable. From here we headed to Thiruparenkundram Temple.

It is one of the six prominent temples of lord Murugan. It is about 4-5 km from Alaar Koil on the hills. Lord Murugan along with his brother Ganesha and his Aayudha appears in a pleasant way and blesses the devotees .

This is one of the 6 main Murugan/Karthikeya temples in India. and a very unique one in that! It is situated in a beautiful and intriguing forest 25 kms away from Madurai and 3 kms from the Alagarkovil temple.

Please don't pay exorbitant prices for taxis and autos to get here. It is immensely simple to get here. Take the bus number 44 from Periyar bus stand, which is the main bus stand of Madurai. It has got a decent frequency of about one bus every 15-20 mins. It will drop you at the foothill of the forest, where lies the Alagar Kovil temple. You Just about 2 mins walking form where the bus drops you, you will find a counter from where a shuttle bus leaves for the Pazhamudir cholai temple. The charge is just 10 rupees. It takes you to the temple in about 10 mins and the distance is 3kms.

The temple itself it extremely pleasing and we reached there at about 6.30 pm when the priests were preparing for the evening palkhi procession. We saw the idol adornment, rituals and then bringing of the small idol of Murugan in a beautiful procession from the sanctum to the swing which was already inhabited by his two wives, Valli and Devasena. Then they make you stand in an organised circles and distribute prasadam. It was overall a very pious and blissful experience.

Don't miss this on your trip to Madurai. And save money by using bus number 44!
