    Divin and architectural marvel
We visited during the month of April 2023. It was very hot as compare to North India. We were told that temple will be closed at 12 noon and it will re open at 4 PM so we have to visit before that. Lots of guides are available outside the temple, not sure if they are registered with government or not. They charged us INR 2000 for four of us for VIP Darshan. One can say that if you are visiting temple they why going via VIP channel, but on the other hand if you have limited time you have to take these advantages. One person escorted us to the temple and helped us in darshan. In side the temple atmosphere was very. A different kind of feeling we had. Pujari did Pooja for us and we were able to perform pooja from very near to the Meenakshi Amma Murti. You need at least one hour to visit every part of the temple even if you are taking VIP facility, so plan accordingly.

    The most beautiful temple
This is one of the most beautiful temples I’ve been to. I was really worried about the crowd and wait time. But I guess I got lucky. I reached there around 10:30 and came out by 11:30. We did not take any guided tour. The temple is so beautiful inside and the story associated to it is even more beautiful. You have submit your cellphone , camera outside. Please plan your visit early in the morning to avoid rush or standing in the queue.

Superb Tour of Madurai with RasheedRajesh
The official Tamil Nadu Government guide, Rasheed Rajesh, provided an informative tour of Madurai's two main attractions, the renowned Meenakshi Amman Temple and the historic Thirumalai Nayak Palace. His expert guidance added depth to our exploration, ensuring we thoroughly appreciated the grandeur of Meenakshi Amman Temple and the rich history of Thirumalai Nayak Palace even during its current period of renovation. Rajesh's official status as a government-authorized guide further enriched our experience, making it an excellent way to discover these iconic landmarks in Madurai. Blissful
Mesmerizing visit. So full of energy and positive vibes. Must go specially if you have faith and belief. Better to hire a guide as he will explain lot of things and can cut short the queue. Mobiles and electronic devices are to be deposited.

Meenakshi Amman Temple with Mr Rajesh
Mr Rajesh (+919994849453) did a wonderful job guiding my wife and I through the Meenakshi Amman Temple. He has a relationship with a local shop where you can safely leave your shoes and belongings. I recommend also leaving your socks as the shop will give you a wipe to clean your feet, this way your socks aren’t ruined. Mr Rajesh was very knowledgeable about the temple explaining the history, traditions and architecture. He speaks great English and is very patient with any questions you ask. You should organize your own transportation for the tour. Request that he take you to lunch (you pay) and you won’t be disappointed with the food.

Excellent visit enriched by helpful guide Rajesh
I visited the temple in January 2024. The temple is large and very impressive and thronging with people. After reading reports on here, I asked Rajesh +919994849453 to guide me around the temple. He was very easy to deal with, I just whatsapped him the day before and he replied immediately and we arranged to meet at one of the towers. He helped me store my shoes and phone securely which was otherwise quite chaotic and get through the pat-down and entry quickly and easily. I would have found this quite confusing to navigate otherwise so I appreciated his assistance (this was mainly why i hired a guide after reading reports on here about it - as per reports phones (and I believe charging packs) are not permitted and I brought just my guidebook, phone and water leaving everything else at my hotel nearby which I recommend doing if you can.) However once through, Rajesh also offered lots of really interesting and thorough explanations about the statues, deities and everything inside the temple. Inside there are some english signs but the layout is quite confusing so I found it very helpful to have Rajesh. He also explained many things about the temple to me and was able to take me down certain paths and routes I would not otherwise have been able to go. He was very patient and even took me back to see something I thought I had missed from my guidebook and round the temple museum at my request so I was able to see everything I wanted to. At the end of the tour we visited a cooperative crafts opposite the temple to see the temple gopuram from their roof and there are crafts to buy if you want (but it was not a hard sell). All in all he really enriched my visit and I would highly recommend Rajesh as a guide. And he kindly shared some wonderful photos of the temple by whatsapp after as no phones allowed inside.

    Exceptional
Amazing place to go and see, full of colour, noise and som many things to see. Bare feet only but there are safe and free places to leave your shoes. Also not allowed phones inside, again they have a desk that takes and stores them for you while you are inside.

    A must-see
We organized a tour with Mr. Rajesh (+919994849453) and he was absolutely fantastic. We agreed to meet up at our hotel around 8AM; note that he does not provide a car of his own, so we had to get one through the hotel (thankfully not a big deal). Once we arrived at the temple, he walked us along the outside, explaining different things and the various structures around the temple. He has a relationship with a local shop where you can safely leave your shoes and belongings (no photos are allowed in the temple); note I was allowed to wear socks into the temple (I've seen that some others were told they could not wear socks inside). All in all, you'll spend about 2 hours there and Rajesh walks/talks you through everything in great detail. Hire him!

This is a huge temple complex with 4 main gates, we initially visited in the evening for the Puja (carrying Shiva to spend the night with Meenakshi). No photos inside so cannot show what it was like. No shoes or mobile phones - all have to be left in security boxes at entrance.

Initially disappointing with shops and food stalls in the entrance lobby, then to the pond in the middle. There were long queues for pilgrims to see the idol, we didn't bother but they were very good natured. The Puja should have commenced around 9pm and the Temple doors be closed, but they still let further people into the complex right up until 10pm hence we were hanging about waiting for the ceremony which was rather tiring.

Notices said no Lungi which is the checked skirt men wear, however someone had managed to get in with one on (how I don't Know we were searched & checked on entry) - he was forcefully ejected with no mercy!

Finally the Puja began in a flurry of overpowering incense, and blasting of horns, the image of Shiva being carried around the complex surrounded by the priests, coming to rest at the entrance to Meenasksi's chamber. This was for a further 10 minutes or so whilst the chanting and wafting of incense continued and the faithful gave lots of money to the Icon. Worth attending for the experience but be ready to hang a round for a couple of hours until they decide to start!

We returned the following day to visit the Thousand Pillar Hall in the North East corner which houses an Art Museum and lots of sculptures.

Wanted to visit this temple for the last 10 years and could finally only make it now.
Darshan is available for all but money makes access to the deity closer and faster.
Hire a guide thus temple has history.

We went around 7:30 am the crowd was normal.

The temples, pillar and carvings are beautiful. I would even call them spectacular. Notice the carvings of the God and goddesses, the details of muscles, fingers and jewelry.
Be sure to visit the 1000 pillar museum.
The temple has several accesses. We went through the east door and left our footwear in the car.

A visit to this famous temple is certainly worthwhile, although you need to be prepared to adhere to strict rules if you wish to gain entry. We took the advice to walk around the external walls of the complex first to admire the 4 towers. We then left all our belongings in safe storage to tour inside.
The temple is still in use today, so it is important to dress respectfully, covering shoulders and legs to be permit entry. You will be searched upon entry. Photography inside is strictly forbidden, and whilst you can take you mobile inside, if you’re caught taking photos your phone will be confiscated, never to be returned.
Still in use today, the temple is a sight to behold with lamp lit corridors leading to shrines, the hall of 1000 pillars and a central water feature. It’s highly recommended you engage the services of a guide, so you understand what you’re looking at.

Visited the temple with family. Had a 5 year old and a 1.5 yr old along. The temple looks amazing from outside. I did not enter the temple because of the Idiotic security. They do not allow and mobile or electronic accessory inside which makes sense as they don't want people to click pictures inside and also keeping out all electronics keeps any mishap away. I had a baby stroller with me and I was stopped at security when asked why the answer was this has wheels. Cannot take anything with wheels inside 🙄. I asked to speak to someone senior, he made a call and then suggested you may enter from the East gates but from the North gate nothing with wheels allowed. Heights !! I left the place without a second thought.

The mighty Minakshi Temple. The gates of the temple rise to a height of 53 m, adorned with thousands of statues depicting figures from Indian mythology. At 9:00 pm, the gods' laying-pots are held. A special ceremony.

Total waste of time. OK - this was the 12th temple we'd visited in 8 days .. so maybe we were templed out, but there was no mention prior to attending that you can NOT take phones, cameras, i-watches or any "battery" included device - a fire from a cell phone battery a couple of years back. It is huge (15 acres), we walked around the outside; & passed on the option to view from 4th story of some tourist curio store. The evening performance of dancing and carrying Siva's bull in procession was also a waste of time & effort. But if you like Hindu temples, and haven't seen too many then maybe do it!

Visiting this temple is an overwhelming experience.
If you are short on time take a guide, to fully understand the nitty gritties of Darshan and also the details of exquisite carvings.
What is not mentioned is that even when the Darshan is officially open the queues are stopped 6 times in a day for an hour for the Abhishek . At any given time there are 600/700 people in the queue of special Darshan ₹100. So be prepared to stand for 2/3 hours minimum.
Arrange to meet in a pre decided spot in case you separate from the group because the mobiles are deposited at the gate.
The ritual is to have Darshan first at Meenakshi temple then at Sundareswarar temple. After that you can leisurely walk around soaking in the beautiful sculptures and the thousand pillars hall.

Of all the temples I have visited in India, this temple comes out as the most troublesome to visit. They have ridiculously strict policies on what you can bring and can't. Bring the smallest bag you can, forget even tote bags. They do not allow bigger bags, mobile phones or any sort of electronic device. It is laughable that they don't even allow memory sticks (however tiny), but have trouble regulating the crowds inside the temple. If you have a need for personal space, avoid going to a temple of this size.

Be warned that security will comb through every single compartment and every single box/case in your bag which to me seems to be a sad use of cheap manpower in India. Be also warned that they manually frisk every single person. Not only is frisking ineffective, it felt invasive and demeaning to have one's privates groped in order to visit a temple. I am not sure why they cannot invest in bag scanners and electromagnetic wands which would ensure accuracy and save both time and dignity.

I would encourage reading up before coming to this temple - avoid the tourist trap of getting a guide. We had one by the name of Senthil and he was both utterly useless and arrogant.

While the actual temple is a classic of Dravidian architecture, my experience was marred by people who should not be allowed to manage a monument of such stature. In comparison, I had visited the Thanjavur Big Temple prior to this, and I can confirm that that is an example of a perfectly run place of worship.

I would not visit this temple again.

Majestic, beautiful, holy, sacred, pristine, peaceful place. The temple remains closed from 12 to 4pm, so plan your visit accordingly. Even in morning 1030, darshanam is closed for 15- 30mins. We took a guide who charged us 400 bucks, he showed us 3D shivling paintings, interesting hole in the roof from where we can see golden top, monolithic stone cravings. We again went in the evening to see the temple lighting at night. There is kund which is closer from south gate. Phone, camera, power bank nothing is allowed inside, there are deposit centre's outside which I saw at west gate and north gate.

A large temple that dates back several centuries and according to some a few thousand years old. Get there in the morning as the crowds are less, keep congnisant of the hours when it is open. A strict security check does not allow visitors to carry anything in, including wallets or phones. An evening ceremony when the idol is taken to her resting place is an interesting spectacle. The 1,000 Pillar museum on the premises is also worth a visit. The sanctum is out of bounds for non Hindus, so be aware.
