I read about these temples on Trip Advisor and we booked an Ola to take us there and back (so easy to do - and cost Rs1800). We went first to the Murugan temple up the hill and then to the main temple.
People were so friendly and helpful at both temples and we were allowed into the inner sanctum at both.
If you want to see temples that are less busy than the Meenakshi then this is a good bet.

Alagar Koil is one of the 108 Divya Desam Shrines located in the outskirts of Madurai. The temple is dedicated to Thirumaal (Lord Vishnu) and the literal meaning of Alagar is "handsome". The shrine finds a mention in various Hindu Scriptures. The main deity Lord Vishnu is accompanied by Sridevi and Boodevi. The visitor should very carefully watch the Sudrashan Chakra in the hands of Lord Vishnu. There are also other shrines inside the temple, Aandal, Chakarathalwar and the Mother Sundaravalli. If you are lucky you will see the elephant inside the temple near the Saraswathi shrine. If one goes on a non festival day, then one can see the Golden Viman atop the main sanctum sanctorum. Its a very large temple where you can sit and meditate at various spots to get a wonderful feeling of mental peace and happiness. There is also a special ticket entry to the main sanctum sanctorum with a nominal fee.

An exquisite temple situated in the north east of Madurai is the rest place of Lord Vishnu and is the sacred place for the followers of Lord Vishnu. It is situated at a distance of about 20 kms from city in the Alagar hills and is also known as Azhagar kovil. The statue of the lord is made entirely from single stone and is a splendid masterpiece.
Speciality of this temple is that variety of statues of the Lord in different postures are all kept in this temple under the same roof .Here the devotees offer holy prayers from the bottom of their hearts to Lord Vishnu the extremely knowledgeable, humble yet powerful ruler of the earth.
It is a huge temple with spectacular halls and other facilities to perform different rituals with sacred mantras in the holy environment.

This is a very special and popular temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu a short drive outside Madurai. Beautiful architecture. It partially destroyed in 1757 by the invading forces of Haidar Ali of Mysore. You can see some of the ruins of the outer wall. It is home to some of the most beautiful granite sculptures. It is a Divya Desam temple.

Azahagar Koil is very famous in Madurai and annual festival kallazhagar is world famous. Main deity is Mahavishnu and temple complex is very sprawling with dedicated sannadis for thayar and chkarathalwar. Sprawling mandapam with nice sculptures. I enjoyed the visit and got blessed. Don't miss it. It is a nice picnic spot also if you go with your family as there is temple operated bus for pazhamudhir cholai and agasa gana. Good to treck as well.

A beautiful temple with Dravidian architecture. It’s situated close to the hills, surrounded by lots of trees & birds. This temple is a must visit if you are in Madurai. Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu/Balaji. Around the temple, they have a small cow shed where one can feed the cows too.

We covered this temple as part of the Yo Madhurai Nature and spiritual Trails. Have to go with a guide to understand the story, etc. The temple is very old and is very beautiful - a lot of old domes, pillars and architecture has been retained. Its worth the visit, i'd say.

Pls guide how far is this temple from Meenakshi temple and how much estimated time required to visit this temple.

This is 17 km from Madurai.
The time spent here depends on your interest in the sculpture and details of architecture!
Each piece of stone thrown around this huge complex has a unique carving and you may wonder how those timeless treasures are so neglected.
Coming to the gorgeous kalyanamandap and the other ruins each inch is awesome.
Main deity temple, you may become speechless at the details.
