Being born in Tenkasi and studied at courtallam, I would like to share some facts about courtallam.
Courtallam has good connectivity. Nearest Railway station is Tenkasi JN. From there u can reach courtallam by Auto which may charge between Rs 150 and RS 200.
Nearest Airports are Madurai and Trivandrum. Both are 4 hours drive away. Taxi may charge u about Rs 3000
Road connectivity is very good to courtallam. Madurai to Qullion haighway is just 3 Km away from Courtallam.

There are various Hotel options in courtallam like Kurunji resorts, saral resorts, e.t.c. But I would recommend to stay in guest house type which got beautilful view, lonely. You may not get 5 star services, only rooms will be available, but u can take ur own cook or hire one cook locally. ask the guest house security to get any food for you.
its recommended to keep a car with u or any local auto driver contact number for easy access to shops and nearby restaurants.

Traditionally courtallam is a kind of place where people used to come with family and stay for a week, with their personalized cook. cooking vessals and gas can be rented locally. People take oil massage, go to courtallam, have bath, and have food and sleep. the same is repeated in their entire stay.
Best time to take bath is in the night after 12 or early morning at 5 to avide rush , its very safe, flash lights are available 24 hours and police present 24 X 7.
There are 8 various falls. easily accessable falls are Main falls, five falls( 5 km from main falls), old falls ( 7 km from main falls), tiger falls ( 3 km), sitraruvi or small falls ( 1 km), other falls are senbagavei ( trecking distance of 5 km from main falls), Honey ( another 5 km from senbagadevi) pazhathottam ( u need approval from forest depatment) .
best time to vist courtallam is between June 15 and august 15. you can also visit in the month of oct, nov and december.

dont miss to have tea , masal vadai, molagai bajji ( capsicum pakoda) after every bath.

Take your own oil and have massage with ur friends are u can also get massage near falls. they charge around Rs 200.

Suggested hotel
Hotel Aravind – near tenkasi railway staion, kurunji villas, for vegetarians, and for non vegetarians – u may try in Hotel Rahmath near senkotai border.

Must visit Places near courtallam.

1. Boating - on the road between main falls and five falls.
2. kutraleswarar temple – near main falls - best time to visit early morning before 7.30
3. tirumalai kovil - 10 km drive - beautiful view- need to climb around 400 steps - very much photogenic place
4. tenkasi kasi visvanathar temple - best time evening 6-7 pm - ejoy the breeze while entering the temple - enjoy the Halwa from " periya lala kadai"
5. Achankovil temple - about 50 km from courtallam - in kerala- beautiful place - will enjoy the senic drive to that place - plan in the morning and come back by evening.- temple closes by 12 in the noon and reopens at 4 only. u can also enjoy a bath in manalar water falls on the way to achankovil 7 km before.
6.Aryanga – about 30 km form tenkasi - in kerala - take a train ride to that place - know the train timing for onward and retun journey from tenkasi staion.

Plan a trip and get rejunuvated.

Courtallam has a list of falls - Main falls, five falls, old courtallam falls, sitraruvi, tiger falls etc. Of all these, main falls and five falls are the most popular among visitors and gets crowded during season (usually around July-September).
Old courtallam is also equally good and I recommend visitors to have a bath over there as it is usually less crowed compared to other falls.

We recently visited Courtallam which we normally do twice a year & this time we happened to stay at Saaral Resort which is located in the Shencottai Road. This resort was opened few years back and every one welcomed such a good resort in a place like Courtallam. But our recent visit as early as 2 days back was the one which we badly wanted to forget for our stay at Saaral Resort.

This hotel has zero maintenance and the rates that they charge per day is definitely not worth the money being spent. I would not never ever step in to this hotel in my life again for the shabby service and poor quality rooms that they offer to their guests.

This is one of those very few places in India where there are plenty of water falls that suits public bathing. There are number of water falls apart from the main falls which is the largest.

Dos and Donts : if you are visiting here in peak season June-july, then you should be prepared for long queues , unruly crowd and risky/slippery rocks.
Though the waterfalls are awesome, public make it too slippery by using oil, shampoos all along the rocks making it very risky/slippery.
if you are visiting with family, please choose other waterfalls (other than main falls) so that your family can get some privacy. there are not much of drying rooms/ privacy for changing clothes, so if you are travelling with your family, you have to make a note of this.

for those who like to trek,, just go above the main falls for a nice trek to Shenbagadevi falls up in the hills ...this is a lovely trek and a relaxing bath in the smaller waterfall (shenbagadevi)..
for more adventurous people, you can still go higher to 'Thenaruvi' (a full day trek.) where you can watch a spectacular water fall inbetween two mountains.. you need to be a strong swimmer to reach the place where the water falls ..if you are not a strong swimmer , then you can watch this water fall from a distance.. but the trek is adventurous.. you need to pack lots of food as you cannot expect any shops here (leave shops..thre are no men here.. little risky).

Though Courtallam is very famous for waterfalls, there are not much of posh restaurants or hotels here.. there are 1 or 2 where you have to reserve in advance..

Spend 1-2 days here to enjoy all the waterfalls..do not miss visting the Thenkasi Viswanathar temple..its a siva temple and a lovely one. Enjoy doing local shopping - halwa is a delicacy here.

My heart falls for the experience I had when I had the chance to visit the falls. Do not miss the old courtallam falls apart from the new one, aintharuvi. Have good bajjis after taking bath in the falls, have some padhaneer to drink apart from having nungu to eat.

One of the most visited place in Courtallam - Spa of South India. The main falls form a good backdrop for the temple. The approach Road to the falls is always crowded. Traffic management needs to improve. The falls are operational during rainy season.

Seperate Bathing Area for Men and Women. Availablility of Unformed Police. Chage Room facilities need to improve.

Lots of Resort nearby the main falls area. Good Location.

I've visited the place many times in the past and this time I was there with my friends for three days.Under the influence of active Monsoon in Kerala, weather was simply superb and was drizzling most of the time.
During off season this place is a sleepy little village with no more than a few people sitting in tea shops, a couple of auto rickshaws playing and a bunch of stray dogs loitering. But its just the opposite during season.
The week ends during season time (June-August) the place is usually over crowded with people and vehicles, more than it could handle. The dressing rooms located near the water falls are generally not clean and hygiene is at stake at most of the places with people spiting and littering all over.
Simple tips if you are traveling to Courtallam... Find out the weather by calling the local hotels or the tourism office or check the Google weather. Book and confirm your rooms in advance. Traveling during week days will be a good option. Eat only in good hotels And when at the falls.. avoid wearing jewels, buy only branded oil, never leave things unattended and never walk bear footed to the water falls (its very unpleasant). Do not allow kids to go out alone to the falls because some times the flow of the water is too heavy when even grown ups will find it difficult to come out. The ideal time to visit the falls on week ends are in the early hours or late in the evening during which time the crowd is low and any time is just fine on week days. The water is very clean and pure, its also pretty cold and enjoyable.

This is one best and cheapest locations where you have many waterfalls and the Peak season is between June - August where you will have steady water flow in all the waterfalls

There are quite a number of waterfalls available here ( Main falls, Five falls, Old Courtallam falls, small falls, senbhagadevi waterfalls and thenruvi waterfalls)

Make sure you go on the week days to avoid crowd and also beware this place might not be as clean as lot of people travel here around the season.

There are some good hotels for all kinds of range the good places to stay with family(saral resorts,Courtallam resorts, srishti resorts) to stay with friends ( pandian lodge etc)

Make sure that you try country chicken in border shop if you are traveling palaruvi in Kerala border.
