The train is a mist do experience in Otty n Connoor. Strongly recommend to avoid excessive crowd, pre book ur seat on IRCTC webiste or app. Regular ticket - 140 & 1st class is 350 each commuter. The train is four seats each side of couch and facing each other there are 8 people space in each couch. The train is cleansed before entering and has an 1 hour ride time. U may buy tro n fro tickets will give you a whole day to enjoy the other town as well. I took a cab back as the train had 5 hours later return.

well the experience on the station is one we wont forget in a hurry , when the train arrive it was like a free for all , fortunately for us we had booked seats , our carriage was ok , you are a little knee to knee with the person opposite , our ride was made all the better for the company in our carriage a belgium couple and 2 other english couples , talking about their experiences in India, i think we had the best seat on the train , facing forward and on the right hand side, those on the left hand side saw very little as the scenery is all to the right , hence lots of conversation, we had an impromptu stop to see elephants , would i do it again no, am i glad we did it yes

We were staying in Coonoor, and had our driver drop us in Ooty to take the train to Mettupalayam where he met us later. The first part Ooty-Coonoor they use a diesel engine, then in Coonoor they switch to the steam engine. So if you want the steam engine experience you have to include the Coonoor-Mettupalayam portion. Lots of fun. Watch out for the monkeys at one of the rest stops though. People have been feeding them and they have become aggressive.

Toy Train which is operated by the Nilgiri mountain railway is one of the prime attractions for tourists visiting Ooty. The train has only 5 coaches and offers amazing experience as it travels through hills and valleys. We had experienced the toy train joy ride from Ooty to Coonoor and it was a great experience.

We took the steam train from Mettupalayam to Coonoor, departing at 7am and arriving at 10:30 - a wonderfully long time to cover 28km. The engine itself is a Swiss-built steam engine that pushes the carriages up a very steep incline using a rack and pinion system. It has to stop a few times to replenish it’s water tank. Every stop involves all passengers getting off to admire the scenery then piling back on when the guard’s whistle sounds. The construction of the track itself (cuttings and tunnels through solid rock, gravity defying bridges) is an amazing example of British Victorian engineering. It is definitely worth booking first class in advance. Besides the comfort and space you might, as we did, be treated to traditional Indian songs from the ticket inspector!
