There is no enough words to describe this scintilating beauty of Gurudongmar Lake. In India very places can be compared with the divine beauty of this pace.

Mesmerizing
Mar 2021 • Couples
Lucky enough for us on weather front we could travel to this beautiful lake. It's like ticking your check box of places you must see when in sikkim.
The roads are good and bad both however shouldn't be much of the problem . One patch is so beautiful that you would love to stop by and click pictures specially when clouds shadows ..Its beautiful.
When on the lake..avoid walking fast or talking too much as you are very high altitude . Usually drivers ther carry oxygen so need not worry. Slow walking and staying calm would help you feel ok ..Get the memories in a photograph..few pics of lake n journey

Gurudongmar Lake is simply amazing (but remember AMS can kill)!
Feb 2021 • Couples
Feb 2021. Simply amazing. The beautiful, lake, at approx 17,000 ft, is worshipped by many. It's 2.5-3 hrs drive from Lachen Sikkim. The road is non existent, full of small boulders & potholes and it is a tiring & terrible drive (in a brand new Innova SUV)- but well worth it at the end.

Prior Acclimitization, Oximeter (take readings every hour), extra warm layering plus thermals, warm gloves & socks, warm water and portable oxygen cans (atleast 6 lts) are strongly recommended. Many tourists rush to this sacred Lake and suffer AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness- this has nothing to do with age or fitness), nausea, breathlessness and fatigue! Do not stay at this Lake (17000 ft) for more than 15mins or if your Oximeter reading is less than 85 SPO2 or you feel nausea/ headache - drive down mmediately. Remember: AMS can kill!

On the way: there are two Military checkpoints, a Military Health Center and Cafe15000 for hot Momos, Tea/Coffee and Maggi noodles.

Amazing place
Dec 2020 • Couples
Visited during our North Sikkim trip from Lachen. The entire journey is awesome (though part of the road is horrible) and you get beautiful views on the way as well as when you reach. Very windy and you need to relax and breathe slowly - we stayed for an hour. Try walking down to the lake if you have time.

Majestic and beautiful
Dec 2020 • Couples
Being here was like a dream came true.
It felt like blessings.

It was an adventure, thrill and never before feeling.
Hard roads lead to beautiful destination. This place is really heaven on this Planet. We were lucky that water of the lake was not frozen.

Caution: take an oxygen bottle or inhaler alongwith if you are carrying kid or have breathing problem.
You may lose your consciousness at some point.

One should visit once this place in life.

Mesmerising!
Dec 2020
One of the highest lake at 17800ft with amazing views and energy! Once you reach there its breathtaking view of the glacier and the frozen surface will mesmerise anyone. I went by bike and the road to the lake is very tough. Its almost off roading. Especially during winters better to avoid going there by bike if you are not sure how to manoeuvre though frozen ice on the road (slow speed, no bending, no breaks). Yalks grazing on the other side of the lake, Army bunkers at top of the hills (other side is China) are a sight to behold. Start early and leave the place early by 10-11am, else risk of cold strong winds by noon.

Not so great view
Sep 2020 • Friends
It takes a very long road trip to reach this place. The roads in the way is like off road. Once we enter army controlled region, the road is good. The view on the way is also good. The lake itself is so small and was at the lower level from where we see. Overall not a worthy place for the pain we take to travel there.

Lifetime Experience
Nov 2019
Gurudongmar Lake – Located at an altitude of 17800 ft. Road is not so good, except last 10 kms, but the entire stretch is very beautiful and scenic. Drive slowly as it will help in acclimatizing. Windy and cold and less oxygen. After leaving Lachen towards Gurudongmar you can take a break at Army camp for breakfast in Army canteen located at 14000 ft. Ask for small oxygen cylinder, rent Rs.500, if required. Another break at cafeteria at Army camp located at 15000 ft altitude. Here also can check for small oxygen cylinder on rent. Ensure to get it at first camp itself. After second camp there is nothing available so, stock of some food items advisable. Gurudongmar is near border area with Tibet China. From Gurudongmar can also visit to Kala Pathar, snow clad area, if allowed, as I understand it is closed for visitors due to security concerns.

Beautiful lake
Oct 2019 • Family
Lake at High altitude. Road route to the lake is not in good shape. But like is beautiful. Kids below 9 and elder people are not allowed to travel to lake due to decrease in oxygen level. My son got faint after reaching their, and provided oxygen at army hospital. So take care if you are going with elder and kids, and don't go if have asthma.

Guru Dongmar Lake... A once in a lifetime experience
Nov 2019
Gurudongmar Lake located at an altitude of 5,425 m (17,800 ft), in the Indian state of Sikkim is considered sacred by Buddhists, Sikhs and Hindus. Located to the north of the Kangchengyao/ Kanchenjunga range, in a high plateau area connected with the Tibetan Plateau, the lake is fed by glaciers. The lake remains completely frozen in the winter months, from November to Mid-May.
The lake has an area of 290 acres and its peripheral length is 5.34 kilometres. The area surrounding the lake, also known as Gurudongmar, is home to Yaks, blue sheep and other wildlife of high altitude.
The nearest tourist accommodation is at Lachen around 68 km (3 hours drive) away. It is advisable to start the trip to Guru Dongmar early in the morning and return by lunchtime to Lachen. As the day progresses weather in the high altitude begins to worsen. Lachen is around 120 km from Gangtok and the drive takes around 6 hours owing to poor driving conditions.
As one of the highest lakes in the world, the terrain is very hostile and yet very beautiful and pristine. The land resembles a desert with sparse to zero vegetation. The road is unpaved. Due to the high altitude, oxygen is also scarce which may lead to breathing difficulties and a light headed feeling. It is advised to spend less time at the high altitude and start the drive down to Lachen soon.
Brave the hardship and difficulty, and you are guaranteed an experience of a lifetime.
