Thangu Valley is known for a military outpost. A few boards here proclaim that it’s the highest in the world. There are series of barracks from various regiments of the army.

Since it was a season of heavy and unseasonal snow, several of the outposts were abandoned. The roads were bumpy and the drive was rather slow. However, that meant that we could appreciate the landscape as it turned from stark brown to pearl white as we met with snowfall.

On a good day, Thangu is a stop on the way to the famous Gurudongmar lake. On this occasion though, the road to the lake was shut due to snowfall. So Thangu was a halt for us to catch up on breakfast. There was nothing much there except a canteen store. They serve bread and WaiWai noodles. And of course some tea.

The store also gives gumboots and other snow wear on rent. It’s a good and safe place to play in the snow since it’s mostly plain and flat
