The palace is very grand and a mixture of open courtyards and vistas with small very ornate rooms and lots of treasures in the form of decorations or artwork to look at. Definitely worth visiting and with a guide (as we did) it is a very interesting experience.
I feel for those reviewers who had a visit on a crowded day which marred their enjoyment as at a couple of bottlenecks we found it a bit overcrowded and claustrophobic. We had to be patient to manage to take some photos or see the views we wanted to but we were quite late in the day so generally lucky with the number of other people around.
The mirrored rooms and the peacock mosaics were the highlights.

This palace was built by a rulers of the Mewar dynasty. This palace was constructed in 1553 by Maharana Udai Singh II. Earlier to this palace construction capital of Mewar family was located in Chittor and then Udai Singh Maharana shifted capital to this new place and name of city also become Udaipur on his name.

During 1537, the Mewar kingdom came under the rule of Maharana Udai Singh II. Due to war with the Mughals there was a risk of losing the Chittor fort. Hence, Maharana Udai Singh II chose a new capital for his kingdom near Lake Pichola that shielded the territory from its enemies, well surrounded by forests, lakes and the imposing Aravalli hills.

Maharana's Lived and administrated their kingdom from this palace and made this palace as Landmark.

First Maharana of Mewar is Guhil, who has Ruled his kingdom from Nagda in the Year of 568 AD. Nagda is 30 km away from the north of present Udaipur. However in the 8th Century, Capital was moved to Chittor and Ruled from there around 800 years, Then it is moved to Udaipur by Maharana Uday Singh II.

After Udai Singh's death in 1572, his son Maharana Pratap took the reins of power at Udaipur. He ruled powerfully and in the famous battle of Haldighat Maharana Pratap lost against Akbar in the year 1576. After the death of Maharana Pratap, Amar Singh I took the power at Udaipur.

But with the increasing Marathas attacks by 1761, Udaipur and the Mewar state were in dire straits and in ruins. By 1818, Maharana Bhim Singh signed a treaty with the British accepting their protection against the other empires. After the Indian independence in 1947, the Mewar Kingdom, along with other princely states of Rajasthan, merged with the democratic India, in 1949. The Mewar Kings subsequently also lost their special royal privileges and titles. The successive Maharana's, however, retained their ownership of the palaces in Udaipur and converted parts of the palace complex into heritage hotels.

Architecture:

The Palace Complex has many gateways, Halls and Villas. The Palace architecture consist of Rajastani, Mugal, European and Chinese styles. Palace is completely constructed with Marbles and Granites. One can see panoramic view of the city from the upper terraces of the palace.

City palace museum is housed within the city palace complex situated on the east bank of pichola lake in Udaipur. The museum has a collection of sculptures, old photographs, paintings, old textiles, and other objects which were used by the royal family. These include old mode of transport, silver objects and armoury. The actual belongings and armoury of Maharana Pratap are also a part of the museum.

The complex open for general public is huge in itself and would take atleast 3 to 4 hours to explore it completely. It is very important to take a guide who is well versed with the place, to understand the historical importance of the palace. Further, there are several stairs in the palace and museum and it is not advisable for senior citizens who have difficulty in walking to visit the same.

This is our eighth trip to India and we have visited so many sites, palaces and museums but today’s visit was a low point.
The cost is the usual foreign tourist hike but that was not the problem as we are well used to that. The place was totally overcrowded with, largely Indian tourists which meant that we spent the best part of two hours shuffling slowly in crocodile lines of visitors down the narrow passageways and through single entry doors. There was no real opportunity to stop and see anything as you had to proceed on in the endless line.
Any windows or exhibits were surrounded so the chance to see them was very limited.
Our main problem however, was that the place was really not very good. The displays are tired and poor with cardboard cut outs of Maharanas dotted around , one even with real shoes on his cardboard feet! The rooms and corridors were grubby and need a lot of TLC and overall it’ was a really poor display. We would have cut and run after one hour of frustration but the one way system was unremitting and the only escape was to tough it out till the end. Notably the fire escapes on the route were all padlocked shut which is a disgrace.
By the time you add in bored and irritable staff and rampant commercialism in the shops around this was not one of our best experiences. We will not be paying the exorbitant 700 rupees each to see the rest of the palace tomorrow which was our original plan.
A major disappointment in what what meant to be one of the highlights of Rajasthan.
Would recommend you save your money....except, like us, it’s probably one of the reasons you are in Udaipur.

I bought a leheriya saree which was priced Rs10500. I was told it was made from custard apple thread. Later i found the same saree in another government shop (city) for Rs 3000 and they informed me that it was the best quality and no such custard apple threads are used for such sarees. It was delivered the next day, in the hotel and i was shocked to see holes in saree and the quality looked completely different and cheap.

Being in such a historic place, i felt cheated. The bus driver had warned us not to buy anything in the gift shops where the guide took us. He was so right and i regret not listening to him. The guide came and asked me directly how much i spent in the shop to know his commission.

I saw similar reviews of the same shop 5 years back, and can only imagine how they must be ripping off the tourists. Totally a turn off in such a majestic historic place. I hope the trust can do something to prevent such bitter experiences. I would never ever buy anything in any palaces in Rajasthan!!

The city palace museum in Udaipur is far better than the ones in Jaipur or Jodhpur. You get to see the structures of the museum built at different periods of time over at least 500 years. Also, you could get a glimpse of the royalty. The palace was so huge that you need at least one and a half hours to cover it.

It would be advised to get a guide at the entrance of the museum to learn how the royals lived in the palace and its 500 years old history.

City palace is a very historical palace.
You can see old royal things within the museum visit inside.
Most of the things in the museum are the things were being used for the royal family's entertainment.

Palace is at the east side bank of the Pichola lake.
There are so many good places around this city palace too.

Ticket to the museum is 300 Rs. per adult.
It should take around 2 to 3 hours normally to see the whole palace.
I think it is costly for the ticket price so it should be a one visit place.

An audio tour is also possible here for foreigners in different languages.
Worth Visiting the place.

A must visit site that shows the history, the indulgence and opulence of a bygone era. From the delicate paintings, to the pretty glass windows and of course the silver room and the mirrored rooms are incredible.
Also has 2, from memory, bathing pools, cut from single pieces of marble. The craftsmanship is sublime.
Yes it’s busy without any curators to nudge you forward, but it’s clearly signposted the route to take, but I would say a guide was really helpful in explaining the museum pieces to us. Wide views of Udaipur from the top.
Oh, and there are a lot of steps. Enjoy

To be fair thinking about Museum the first impression was it would be like just any other museum but we were surprised.

It has a lot of history, artefacts from Chittaugarh and other forts are also kept here.
You have to walk a lot, there are a lot of picturesque spots, view of the lake from the windows, view of the city from the other side, lot of stairs as well.

Takes around 45 minutes or so to take a complete stroll.

Totally recommended

Take your time for this one as there is lots to discover. Steeps are a lot, mind your head but go looking for the glamour and splendor that you can still feel and enjoy. Large parts of the palace are now a museum but a lot of the ornaments are still there and the architecture is stunning. Also enjoy the best looks over the city.

If you visit Udaipur, do not miss this one.

btw, the entrance is from behind and of course there are a lot of souvenir stalls on the way. Simply ignore and go for the great door.
