About
Over the past 15 years, Sushma has been providing cooking classes to foreign guests who have travelled to India from all different parts of the world. If you sign up for one of her classes, you will enhance your knowledge of cuisine, develop your own cooking skills and indulge yourself in an unforgettable, traditional Rajasthani celebration of food under the guidance of this passionate and experienced teacher! Sushma’s love for cooking began at the young age of 10 while watching her grandmother cook traditional Indian meals for her family. After dipping into many spice jars and creating her own unique Indian dishes, Sushma quickly found her place in the kitchen. Sushma admits she truly is a lover of food and for this reason when she is in the kitchen, she appears as graceful and contented as a queen in her palace. She is most alive and vibrant when sharing the wealth of knowledge she has about food with others who have an appreciation for food.

I turned up and asked for a course the next day and although there was no one else booked in Shushma offered to do a private session for twice the price of a group one. As I was alone, she made it vegan at my request and showed me patiently how to make Indian food to my taste.
She’s a great teacher and inspired me to do more when I get home.

We really enjoyed our two-hour cooking class with Sushma. Sushma gave very thorough explanations throughout, showing us lots of alternatives to her recipes (eg for an electric stove instead of gas, for vegan cooking, for Jains etc) and giving us a lot of background. The recipe card is a helpful memento. We were able to have a go ourselves and to try the food as we went, finishing with a delicious lunch. Sushma was very communicative and helpful, even changing the time of the class slightly to help us catch a train. The kitchen is nice and clean.

We loved our cooking class with Sushma. She shows you the technique of different curry bases. A really good insight into Indian cuisine and the use of the spices.
Sushma has been doing this for years and she knows her stuff!
Would recommend to anyone visiting Udaipur.

Sushma’s cooking class was brilliant! Firstly she is a lovely person! You learn how to make masala chai, 3 different curries, and breads - the perfect basis for Indian home cooking that you can take home with you. She takes you through each recipe step by step, is easy to follow and super fun! The food is delicious and authentic North Indian cuisine. Some of the best food I’ve eaten in Udaipur as well!
You get a recipe card for the dishes you learn to make, and you can also buy a cookery book and spices. Make sure you arrive at the class with an empty stomach as you’ll be eating the dishes at the end! I loved this experience and can’t wait to cook the dishes for my family when I get home. Thank you Sushma!

I stayed at Hotel Krishna Niwas which is run by Sushma and her family, and her cooking classes were recommended by a friend who had been there before. What a cool experience! The kitchen is quaint and homely - also clean and stocked with such interesting cookware and spices. I'm a very visual person so already my mouth started watering!
You are given a printed hand out of the dishes you will learn about and the class is mostly demonstration by Sushma, with the occasional opportunity to jump in and assist. I really liked this approach! For me the best thing about this 2 hr class is you discover how quick and simple it actually is to make authentic indian dishes that taste great! There is a wonderful calm atmosphere in the kitchen and then at the end you get to feast on everything which was lovingly prepared!

Tip: be sure to purchase some of the homemade spices - much better than any market bought equivalent!

Sushma was a great teacher. She not only intimately understood Indian cooking, but she also understood what ingredients or "restrictions" one might find in North America. We cooked Paneeer Masala, Dal Makhani, Stuffed Paranthas, Chapatis, Pumpkin Curry, and Chai Masala. For R850 each it was more than worth it. We were the only 2 in the class and learned a lot.....and ate so much... it was delish....

would definitely go back. Her kitchen was modern, clean, but very practical. she gave us copies of the recipes and we have bought all the ingredients to make at home!!

We had a great time at Sushma's cooking class. We made 2 currys, masala chai, roti, parantha and aloo jeera. All delicious and picked up some great tips on how to make a good curry. Not as hands on as I would have liked but still very fun and you learn a lot. Come hungry

Sushma's cooking class is not the cheapest in the area but boy did we get more than our monies worth. For 1500 INR per person you get a 2 hour cooking course where you learn how to cook 3 curries, parantha, chappatti , two kinds of masala as well as chai. Sushma also gave us tips on how to make our own yogurt and a multitude of tit bits. She is a patient, kind and wonderful teacher who happens to have taught us how to cook the best tasting food we had on our entire trip. She also packed up the food we cooked for us to take away, which was great because we didn't have to go out for dinner. All in all a brilliant experience.

Sushma was a very knowledgeable and kind person. She gave us each an opportunity to come up to the stove and help her. We made several dishes including masala chai, pumpkin curry (one of the best things I have ever tasted...ever), dal, roti, stuffed parathas, four different curries including butter sauce, and curried eggplant. The class was about two hours and it was a great length of time. The kitchen is sent up so you can easily view all the steps that Sushma is going through at the counter. There are mirrors up near the ceiling that are slanted out so you can view what is happening in the pots. All of our questions were answered with a smile. We got to sample as the class went along and then once class was finished, we all headed upstairs to watch the sunset and have dinner. My husband, son and father-in-law came to meet me once class was finished and Sushma welcomed them and gave them each a plate of our creations. I can confidently recommend this class as a very good time and very helpful in broadening my knowledge of Indian cooking.

My son booked this cooking class for my friend and me in Udaipur and it was sooo much fun! Sushma is a lovely woman, a fabulous cook and has a clean, well-equiped kitchen that is a pleasure to sit in. She taught us recipes and gave us handouts, but the best tips we learned just watching her. For example, we didn't know you don't have to peel ginger, she just grated it, peel and all. Yes! After she cooked this yummy food, she took us up on her terrace to eat dinner with her and her husband, overlooking the city. An exceptional day, an exceptional meal.
