There are not a lot of tourists going to Osian which is good because you are left in peace and you are nowhere close to as much of a monetary target as you are in other places but it also means that you have a limited understanding of where you are, what you are seeing and what to do. Just imitate the locals and relax: you'll have a great experience.
The temple is beautiful and well worth the drive which also gives you a sense of what the more rural India looks like. (Assume 2 hours each way for the road to be on the safe side - roads in India are fairly unpredictable)

Note that the temple is about 60 Kms from the Jodhpur city (The main picture provided in the Trip advisor is incorrect) . It takes almost 1.5 hours to reach this place- the gateway to the Great Indian Desert. Coming down from Jaisalmer enroute to Jodhpur by train, I alighted at Osiyan railway station which is 1 KM from the Jain temple. This 8th century jain temple dedicated to Lord Mahaveer is architecturally very rich. Every nook and corner of the temple, you will see the age old sculptures carved in red sand stone. There are smaller temple like structures in the complex giving a rich look to the main temple. The wall of these small temples are intricately carved too. The whole structure including the Gopura or the entrance tower looks reddish pink color. The interior of the temple with carved pillars is stunning too. The temple is also famously called as Khajuraho of Rajasthan owing to its marvelous, breathtaking carvings. Must visit place for people who would love to see the architectural marvels.
Note: Before entering the temple, please remove leather items and deposit them in the locker available near the office. Jain dharmashala is available for accommodation in the temple premises. Photography is strictly prohibited within the temple complex from May 2015. Sachiamata temple is nearby (800 meters) and worth a visit too.

This was one of our favorite stops during our month-long visit. The atmosphere was reverent and worshipful. Unlike other places we visited, tourists are welcome but not the sole purpose of this beautiful temple. As such, we could peacefully walk the grounds without being harassed by solicitors and/or beggars. Because we were not of the Hindu faith, we were unable to go inside the temple, but we were traveling with Hindu friends who could share with us the intricacies of the temple life. Worth the drive...but I must admit driving (or riding) in India has its own set of challenges and is not for the weak of heart! LOL! And although I checked that there are bathroom facilities, remember this is not a typical tourist attraction and the facilities are in keeping with that.

We visited the Jain Temple whilst en route from Jodhpur to Udaipur. We arrived about 1130 and were informed that the sample was not open until 1200 hours. Having paid our entrance fee we used the time to photograph some external aspects of the temple. On opening the staff checking the tickets were surly at best and quite unhelpful. The complex architecture inside the temple is worth viewing but our visit was tempered by the staff attitudes - hence our score of Average. I had to remove my letter trouser belt (which was fine) but surprising they then let my wife enter holding her leather bag!!

This place is amazing. It is six hundred years old and has been in continuous use as a temple for all that time. Consequently the marble carvings which cover all pillars and surfaces of the temple are amazingly in tact. We were lucky enough to be shown over by the High Priest of the Temple who explained all the mythology and culturally significant attributes. Very interesting.

Don't miss this site, it even beats the Taj Mahal. The marble carvings in this temple are unbelievable. We walked around with our jaws dropping. We have never seen anything like it. It should be a "wonder of the world".

There is plenty to see in this temple. Be sure to look for the pillar that is tilted. Photography is permitted with few exceptions...they will tell you.

All the Jain temples of Jodhpur are master pieces of architectures. The temples are the places of worship for not only Jains but other communities.

We had originally omitted this from our trip, but added this to the itinerary when we cancelled the planned Jaisalmer leg. The temples are beautiful and impressive, however, allow for ample time (1.5hrs each way) to and from Jodhpur. There are two Jain temples, nearby one another- this was empty, and used mainly for visits whereas we couldn't enter inside the other one, as there was a big queue by the local population who were congregating inside.

Visit if you have extra time in Jodhpur, however if you're going to be visiting other Jain temples in other parts of India and are short of time, perhaps you could consider something else.

The Jain temple of Osian are one of the oldest Jain temples in India. They are made up of pure rock, red stone and black stone, and boast of some very intricate masonry and sculpture work. They are old but they stand strong. These temples provide us with the time of origin of Jainism and its magnanimity.

Good place to visit for Jains and those who are interested in historical relics.
