About
Situated 120km North West of Jaisalmer city is Tanot in Thar Desert of Rajasthan. You will find sand dumes all along with small bushes. You can see herds of sheep & goats on the way. Beautiful landscape. Total desert. Nice to see Indira Gandhi Canal full of water after Ramgarh. You can see vegetation & farms near the canal. It is very near to Pakistan border. Last civilian point in India on border. Tanot Rai Mata Temple is an old temple with a history of India Pakistan war of 1965. Hundreds of shells fallen here did not harm the temple. Some bombs are in display at temple. Maintained & managed by Border Security Force of India. Keep food & water with you. Very few population.

Something special here (divine and historic)
Interesting temple as it houses unexploded bombs from 1971 war. This temple remained unharmed during the war, though all surrounding areas became black with bombardment. For all the young crowd, watch the 1997 movie, Border for reference. It's a full day journey to visit Tanot Mata temple and the bordering areas. Food and amenities are not an issue. Carry water with you. Memorabilia and souvenirs are available opp. the temple.

Tanot Mata Temple and India-Pak Border
Tanot Mata temple is approx. 120Km from Jaisalmer Town. . The Temple is well maintained by BSF People and have a lot of positive vibes. Go for a day visit from Jaisalmer and cover this temple enroute to India-Pak Border. You get the permission from Tanot mata temple for visiting India-Pak Border(which is ~20Km away from this place). A lot of eating option near to temple

    Divine power
Located 120 kms from Jaisalmer. Indo-Pak border is hardly 20 kms from here. One can visit the border as well, vehicle pass for which is made by the BSF at the temple complex. Tanot mata is a highly revered deity of the desert region as well as the BSF. The legend is that she protects and assists the BSF personnel in foiling any cross border operation from Pak. In 1965 when Pak intruded the Indian territory its airforce tried to bomb down the temple. About 3000 bombs were shelled on the temple but none of them exploded. The Paki pilots flying their fighter jets surprised with this miracle when looked down, could only see a little girl standing alongside a lake instead of the temple. After the Pak lost the war, their army general requested to visit the temple and pay respects to the deity for such a show of divine power. One can still see few of those unexploded bombs in the temple. Similarly in the 1971 war when Pak attacked again they shot cannon balls from tanks towards the temple but none of them could damage the temple. Also during their attack on Laungewala post the tanks got stuck badly in the sand which gave the Indian army sufficient time to finish the matter with the help of the Airforce. BSF is the main caretaker of the temple complex. It is said that no personnel moves towards the border without bowing first at the temple.

Beautiful temple and scenery along the road
The temple is beautiful. It has on display the bombs that didn't explode during 1965 war. We travelled from Jaisalmer. The road was nearly empty. The view along the road was so good. You can stop to take pictures at few places. We saw Indira Gandhi canal on the route. The region around the canal is so green. You could see the transformation water can do to a desert. From the temple, you get passes to visit Indo Pak border. You have to get a form and fill details of all the passengers who would be visiting. The process though is quite messy. That is surprising as it is actually controlled by army. You have to deposit any document of any visitor (like Aadhar card). You can collect this after returning. But bear in mind that your document would be in a heap of other documents and you have to search. In summary, lovely place to visit.

    Best day in Rajasthan
One of the best day in Rajasthan was when we visited this place and the Indo-Pak border near this temple. The best experience of the desert was here, hundreds of miles of barren land & sand dunes! Few tips for first time travellers: 1. Try and avoid going on Sundays & public holidays as the crowds swell and there is a limit to the number of people BSF allows for the border visit. 2. Get there early as the que for border pass are much smaller. If you are visiting from Jaisalmer it's better to get here first and do the border trip before going to Longewal, another must see place. 3. All you need is your driving license to get the pass for the border.

If you plan for a two days tour to Jaisalmar, it will be worth to visit Tanot and Longewala before staying in a Desert camp at Sam. It would take 6-7 hours from Jaisalmer to a Sam desert camp via a visit to Tanot and Longewala. We enjoyed the trip which involved driving thorugh the entire tar deseret (by a private taxi), one hour dharsan & relax at Tanot mata temple and one and half hour at Longewala war museum and a short film show by BSF. We had to reach the desert camp before 4pm so that we wound not miss the camel and jeep safari during sunset.

People generally visit this temple mainly as it's enroute to the border post. We visited the BSF HQ near Hanuman Chowk and they wrongly directed us to seek permission at the temple itself which we finally did't get as we were told that it's given in Jaisalmer itself. Too much confusion about where to get the permission and there were many like us who were misled.

Its almost 120 Kms from Jaisalmer. people usually visit Tanot Mata temple and laungwewala yudhsthal on a day trip from Jaisalmer. we took a private cab, which charged us Rs. 4000/- for the trip. we left Jaisalmer around 9 am, had a break in ramgarh and then proceeded for Tanot mata. After Ramgarh, you will mostly get an empty road till you reach the temple and the road in this section is very good. Unless there is a long queue, you will not take more than half an hour to complete darshan and get starting for Laungewala. the newly constructed road between tarot mata temple and laungewala is a driver's delight. even if you are not driving, you will be mesmerised with the views of surrounding desert all around. laungewala yudhshtal again would not take more than 30-45 mins to visit. the entry is free in both the places. there is a small museum here but we avoided the same due to crowd. While coming back, we again had our lunch at rambagh and were back in Jaisalmer well before the Sunset.

overall, its an average day trip. of course both the places have historical importance, therefore you will never be too disappointed visiting it, but if you were to treat them indecently as a neutral tourist, you might not be overjoyed either. if you are in Jaisalmer for more than 3 days, then I would recommend this day trip, otherwise its better to drop it from your itinerary.

While coming back to jaisalmer, ask your driver to take you to bada bagh, which is on the outskirt of Jaisalmer. this is another place worth spending half an hour.

This is typical Hindu temple belongs to Tanot Mataji.
It is approx 120Km from Jaisalmer Town. Its is Full day site seeing trip.
This temple is maintained by BSF. That is why it is clean and neat place to visit.
Please keep in mind that at that temple there is no restaurant etc due to remote place and also due to army. So one has to take lunch at in between small town 'Ramgarh'. which is having few basic food options.
Jaisalmer it self is remote place and this temple is further 120km away from Jaisalmer so one can imagine how much remote the place is.
Pakistan Border is hardly 5 to 10km from temple.
If someone is staying for 3-4 days at Jaisalmer then one should visit this place.

If you are in Jaisalmer do plan to visit here. It has a history from the 1971 India Pakistan war. The temple was also shown in the movie Border. Shells and Bombs fired by Pakistan army near the temr didn't blow up. They are still preserved inside the temple premises. A must place to be there.

Very pious place. Quite far from Jaisalmer. This is a temple having history of remaining protected from all ills. Quite near border but never damaged by shelling. Multiple unexploded shells and bombs suggest it to be a miracle of Devi. A small mention has been made in film Border. BSF has created a permanent structure and they worship it regularly. Huge compound. Drinking water available. Rooms available for overnight stay. Famous amongst Bollywood stars.

Started at 6 in the morning from Jaisalmer - took apprx 3 hours to reach this historic temple due to fog. The last point on Rajasthan border where you dont need permit. Roads are easy to drive.
