If you are in Jaisalmer you simply cannot miss Desert National Park aka Thar Desert.
There are many activities that you could do while you are visiting just to name a few - Camel Safari, Desert Jeep Safari , Camp Stay , Folk Dance performance etc.
It all comes down to your service provider you choose for each of these activities that will either make a positive or negative impact on your overall experience.
We luckily had a great experience with each and every one of them.
Just to give you an idea there are two areas that you could visit one is Sam and the other is Khuri. Sam is about 50kms and Khuri is abt 70 kms from Jaisalmer.
70 % of the tourist population goes to Sam since its closer but that's a disadvantage as its very crowded and commercial the rest and mainly the foreigners visit Khuri as it secluded. So the choice is yours .

The Desert National Park is a protected sanctuary. The park is considered not only the largest in the state of Rajasthan but among the largest in India. The catchments area of the Desert National Park is around 3162 sq. km. It is spread through Sam Sand dumes & Khuri Sand dumes. You have to go South-West from Jaisalmer towards Khuri. Turn right before Khuri towards Sam Sand Dumes on Major District Road 36 to reach Sudasari. You can enter the park from there. You should have 4X4 drive. It is around 40km from Jaisalmer. Most of the locals does not know about the park. Only nature loving crazy people should go there with all accessories, binoculars, SLR camera, water, food etc. It may be disappointing if you only find some deer.
The great Indian Bustard is a magnificent bird and can be seen in considerably good numbers. It migrates locally in different seasons. The region is a heaven for migratory and resident birds of the desert. One can see many Eagles, Harriers, Falcons, Buzzards, Kestrel and Vultures. Short- toed Eagles, Tawny Eagles, Spotted Eagles, Laager Falcons and Kestrels are the most common among these. Among animals you could get to see the desert fox, wolf, black bug, chinkara, nilgai and crusted porcupine. You could also get to see the several species of reptiles including chameleons and snakes typical to the terrain. Prior permission is needed to enter the park.
The substantial part of the park is on a landscape, which comprises of lakebed of extinct salt lakes and thorny scrubs. It is a wonder in itself that how come living organisms flourish in these harsh conditions. Similarly, a considerable area of the Desert National Park consists of sand dunes.

It is beautiful to watch vast stretch of sand. This dunes are not polluted as they are in sam dunes. Travel in groups to avoid any issues. Meet forest guard before 8 Am and book a camel cart to visit it from inside.

I have rated Desert National Park as an excellent attraction, since we saw what we had come to see there. We were on a birding excursion with Kalypso Birding (based in Kerala) and wanted to see the birds of the dry country, and there are many, and we saw lots of them. In addition to our Kalypso guide, who knew the birds well, we always had to have a local guide from the park hop in our van. They could not speak English, but they did know where to go to find the more sought after birds like the Great Indian Bustard. We were based at the Prince Desert Safari Camp, and spent two full days birding in various sections of the park. As the birds of the dry country are not the colourful birds of India's woodlands, it was helpful to have Satyan, our birding guide, with us, as he knew the birds' calls and their whereabouts and has a good eye for spotting them.

A trip to the Thar desert near Jaisalmer was really thrilling. Take the road from Jaisalmer and after 45 kms of smooth drive, the sight of the sand dunes at Sam is quite magical.
We went to Sam in the last week of Oct 2014. Surprisingly, the day temperature was quite high and almost touched 40 degrees Celsius. After 4.00 pm, the sun took it a little lighter and we were able to go for a 40 kms desert safari in a 4x4 Mahindra Thar at around 4.30 pm. The thrill was in dunes bashing and the 4x4 vehicle was apt. Went into the remotest of places, spotted a small herd of wild camels and had our ears and hair full of sand.
After the desert safari, it was time for sunset. We went over sand dunes and as the sun was descending, watched the skyline showing shades of red, orange, grey, blue, white and purple. After sunset the weather starts to chill. We also went to a local place in Sam for a cultural show with folklore songs and music, kabeliya (local tribes) dance performances and savour Rajasthani cuisine.
Overall, a mesmerizing experience.

The Great Indian Desert, or the Thar desert is the 1.3 Million Square KM desert area between India and Pakistan. It's one of the most spectacular landscape comprising desert planes, dunes, scrubs and some of the most amazing desert wildlife.
Desert National Park (DNP) is the most unique and largest national park of India, ranging over 3162 sq.Km spread over Jaisalmer and Barmer districts of Rajasthan.
My visit to DNP was in the winter, when the temperature was as cold as 5 deg C. Summers here will witness a scotching 50 deg C too !!
Best time to visit the DNP is between Oct - Feb. The weather will be pleasant during the days and cold in the night.
DNP is a must for Bird watchers. One can see a huge variety of migratory birds, specially the raptors (birds of prey)., such as Laggar Falcon, Peregrine Falcons, huge numbers of Vultures, Eagles etc.,
However the major attraction of the park is the Great Indian Bustard. DNP is believe to be the last place of these elegant birds, which are on the verge of extinction.
DNP is a beautiful ecosystem, which ha many small human settlements inside the park who are peacefully coexisting with its denizens.
Visit DNP to witness the life inside a desert. There is a lot to learn from these deserts.

Its a vast desert park but you are typically taken to a few sand dunes where you can camp or just make a day visit. Camel safari, Quad-bike safari (available only in one place) or Jeep safari's are available in sand dunes. If the sky is clear, you can watch Sunset on dunes. There are live music shows in the night and dinner included if you take a day package from one of the travel agents. Its a unique experience which you don't experience usually.

Is there any entry point for the Park? How is the safari conducted? Can it be booked from Jaisalmer office or online? Is it a regular safari like in other sanctuary or just a stroll in the desert while camping?
