Dhauligiri Shanti Stupa is a white coloured quaint temple dedicated to Gautam Buddha. It is located on a small hill top nearly 7 km from Bhubaneshwar city centre. It is easily approachable by road and a flight of steps takes you to the Stupa built in collaboration with Japan Sangha Organisation. The Stupa has statues of Gautam Buddha depicted in various postures.
At the foothill is the ancient edict of Ashoka and an elephant rock statue dating back to the Mauryan period. It is said to be the site of the famous battle of Kalinga.
As you descend, there are several shops selling cashews and almonds grown locally at quite reasonable rates and worth a try.

We visited this site primarily since we were informed that there is a sound & light show which was excellent. To our surprise, we were informed that the same had been shut since the past 2 years. Surprisingly even our driver & the Bus operator was not aware of this. The Shanti Stupa itself is a worth visiting & will not take more than 20 min.

Do this for a fantastic view of the Daya River after visiting the Ashokan Rock Edict at the base of the hill. This structure itself has no historical or aesthetic value. It was built in modern times and has nothing related to Ashoka the Great emperor. Sadly, it detracts from the Great Dhauli Edict of Ashoka in the garden at the base of the hill.

It was worth a visit.
First of all it was drizzling and I loved the weather on the hil top too.
We drove up the hill and parked our car.
Then we climbed up the steps and visited the Shiva Temple in front of Dhauligiri Shanti Stupa.
Just mesmerizing work and beauty at its best of the White Peace Pagoda.
Work in progress at site.

Located on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, dhauli shanti stupa is one of the famous tourist attractions in the state. It lies on top of the dhauligiri hills and is a buddhist peace pagoda built by King Ashoka. It is a peaceful place and one can come here with both friends and family. The view from the top of the hills is stunning. Apart from the pagoda, there is a Japanese temple and ashokan edicts which are also worth a visit. The roads leading to this place are spotless and one can easily find multiple modes of transport to come to this place from the nearby cities.

Dhauli giri is a Buddhist Stupa on a small hill on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar. One has a great view of the the surroundings from the parikrama area. It is a nice peaceful place for an evening's outing. The light and sound show is enchanting and gives one a comprehensive history of the place. The stupa is not an ancient monument though, but of recent origin. (Mid 20th century, I think). Situated in the banks of the historic Daya River, it is a must visit place.

It was an amazing experience visiting a place of such historical significance. The place that has seen a magnificent transformation into the life of one of the greatest ruler in the history of this country. The site remains witness to the great Kalinga war and the bloodbath that took place during the war. The site is easily accessible by road and entry to the site is free.
It is recommended to visit the site if you are in Bhubaneswar.
