Tourist place in the centre of the city. Nominal entry fees 5 rs per person and caves of ancient times one can see. Don't know much about place history but one can have good information about history if interested.

No hardly recommendable information about the caves expect at one two points. Don't even expect guides.
Too crowded on winter late mornings and favourite spot for lovers to escape the regular crowd.
Absolutely littered with plastic wastes and others. No respect for the monument.
The government thought had made some effort by coroning off the important caves but people still jump the lines for the sake of photo. The caves are also wheelchair friendly up to a certain location.

Had an interesting and informative visit to Udaygiri caves in Bhubaneswar with guide Chandra Patra. He gave us a very good overview of the history of these caves along with showing us Queen, Ganesha and Elephant caves. Tour lasted 1 hour overall. After that we were free to explore the site. Ticket cost is 25 ru per person and includes visit to Khandagiri caves. We went in the morning ~10:30am; it wasn’t too crowded and weather was good too. I would recommend to go to these caves with a good guide.

1 century BC caves situated in a hill outskirts of Bubaneshwar, originally it was used by Jain monks as a residence.Well preserve and maintained by ASI.must visit if anyone is in Bhubaneshwar, get a guide to get more about the caves but do finalize the deal before starting. There are lots of monkey so keep your belongings safe specially mobile, camera etc.

If you are a history lover and wanted to visit , see the architecture , art or sculptures and click few photos, this is a place for a quick visit. Else not so great to admire at. Few intrinsic works on caves structures are worth capturing. This is a place made by king after he embraced Jainism post kalinga war. Water channels to keep this place cool and secret caves to move are interesting to know

Udaigiri Khandagiri caves are of great historical and archeological importance. The ticketing counter is very far from actual caves. So its better to first go further and collect the tickets and come back. There are no government identified Guides which is a minus point. I negotiated and paid 250 to the guide and thats worth it. Very significant details about King KHARAVELA and Kalinga dynasty. Didnt go to khandagiri caves as thats huge number of steps upstairs.

It’s a 11th century archeological sight . However only ruins are left. Nothing much to see. It’s a place for locals to hang out in the evening. Nothing much has been done to preserve. Visit to this place can be avoided.

A very beautiful historic sight. Definitely unlike anything I’ve seen before. There are two sets of caves—one is much less touristy than the other. Make sure you walk all the way around the grounds. Some of the caves are more hidden and tucked away than others, but all of them are beautiful to see.

These are remnants of a Jain monastery built by the erst while king called Kharvela and given to jain monks to live. Monks dwelled here and practiced meditation and penance. Architecture of the monastery is quite appreciable. Built in 5-6th century A.D. with no scientific know how but still standing straight, mostly intact is a must to watch place.

Will I be able to find English speaking guides? Any idea how much they charge? Thanks

There is no need of Guide. It's a very small place . You may require a Guide if you visit Ajanta , Ellora . This place doesn't worth for a Guide. Do a Google search on Udayagiri and visit that place.

IS it necessary to hire guide for my family of 5 who r visiting caves this april???
Can these caves be enjoyed without guide??
Written March 23, 2018
Always you can enjoy the caves and sculptures without guide. But if you really want to know the history or background , you can find those in google or else you can hire guide on the spot.
Many of the people enjoy or roam around without guide. so guide is not mandatory at all.

I'm visiting kolkatta in December and will be in bhuvaneshwar on 28th. I have two days in hand to travel somewhere nearby. I was suggested udaygiri caves and khandagiri caves. Can I get details regarding these places and also other places nearby I can cover.
Written October 25, 2017
Udayagiri and Khandgiri caves are ok to visit but would hardly take 1-2 hours of your time. You can visit Chilika Lake, Nandankanan Zoological Park and Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneshwar and take a trip to Puri the next day for Jagannath Temple, Amazing Beaches and Konark Sun Temple. Chandrabagha beach is very near to Konark (3km) and around 30 km from Puri. You can see the sunrise there, its worth it.

Hi I have a two days stay in Bhubaneswar, can anyone guide me so that I can make it in planed way.
Written July 19, 2017
Hi!
Bhubaneswar itself has a lot to offer.
So if you want a whirlwind tour then you can go to Konark and Puri on one day. The second day you can see the places in Bhubaneswar, like the Udaygiri/Khandagiri Caves, Ekamra Kanan, Lingaraj temple, Raja Rani Temple and many other temples nearby, Museum, Tribal museum etc.
It will depend on what you are interested in. If you are interested in history and architecture you can visit the temples, museum and may be Ratnagiri, Lalitgiri (a little off from Bhubaneswar) and Udaygiri and Khandagiri caves, Puri, Konark, Dhauli Peace Stupa and the Ashokan edict near it.
If you are interested in nature, you can go to Chandaka Forest near Bhubaneswar or Deras dam, Ekamra Kanan, the zoological gardens called the Nandankanan, Jaydev Vatika.
In the evening you can enjoy some cultural recitals in Rabindra mandap.
Finally, you must keep a few hours exclusively for shopping. Orissa has much to offer you as take aways - beautiful hand looms, exquisite filigree work, pata painting, dokra etc.
So if you are more specific in your query I will be happy to draw out a plan.
