About
KIRKEE WAR CEMETERY was created to receive Second World War graves from the western and central parts of India where their permanent maintenance could not be assured. The cemetery contains 1,668 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War. There are also 629 First World War servicemen buried in the cemetery in unmarked graves in the grassed area between the Memorial and the Cross of Sacrifice, and who's names are recorded on the KIRKEE MEMORIAL. The KIRKEE MEMORIAL stands within the cemetery and commemorates more than 1,800 servicemen who died in India during the First World War, who are buried in civil and cantonment cemeteries in India and Pakistan where their graves can no longer be properly maintained. This total includes the names of 167 servicemen buried in Deolali Government Cemetery whose graves are currently being reinstated by the Commission, and 629 servicemen mentioned above whose remains were brought from Bombay (Sewri) Cemetery for re-interment here in 1962. On the same memorial are commemorated almost 200 East and West African servicemen who died in non-operational zones in India in the Second World War, and whose graves either cannot be located or are so situated that maintenance is not possible.

The War Cemetery at Kirkee continues to make a silent statement amongst gravestones seemingly standing erect in salute to
fallen solders.
It is fitting that the verdant surroundings reflect the feeling of serenity in this hectic world .

Kirkee War Cemetery is a Peace full place, You will remember the solders you lost in the war, because of those solders we have our freedom.
The environment is silent and very heartwarming. I am blessed to have those men protecting us and making our lives peaceful by giving their lives.
Thank you

Such a sombre setting, beautiful memorial remembering fallen solders during the second world war. Very well maintained and it should be as respect to those resting here.

The Kirkee War Cemetery just off the Mula road is maintained under the aegis of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission of six independent member states whose principal function is to mark
record and maintain the graves and places of commemoration of military service members of the Commonwealth who died in the two World Wars.
The 1668 war dead from the Second World War are buried in a cemetery in the Kirkee area (also known as Khadki). It is open between 0800 and 1600 hrs and it is below the level of the road which makes wheelchair access impossible.
Apart from Second World War burials there is a Kirkee Memorial within the cemetery of 1800 servicemen and women who died in India during the First World War.
The surrounding environs of the cemetery and the carefully maintained lawns are a very peaceful sight. The graves are marked with headstones with the names of the dead and it is poignant to see
the young ages at which some of them perished.
Given its out of the way location, the Kirkee War Cemetery is often
overlooked by people visiting Pune and they are missing a unique place of remembrance where one can spend upto an hour.
The permission of the Manager who lives across the road is required
to gain entry. It is common to see visitors from overseas who come to
pay respects to the war dead, some of whom could be relatives.

It’s a beautiful war cemetery located in the khadki cantonment area near Khadki bazar. The graves belong to soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the 1st world war. It remains open till 4pm and there are no entry charges. History buffs may walk down the memory lanes by reading the grave stones

This is an war cemetery from 2nd world war. Very old and also popular in Pune. The graves of our martryed soldiers are burried here. More than 100 of them are in total. The view also givesa goosebumos with a sad moment of their sacrifice for us.

I was in Pune for three days and had plans to see a bit of the city of Chatrapati Shivaji and the Marathas. As chance would have it I had to leave it hurriedly for urgent work. I thought I will not be able to see even one place in it.
As it happened, on the way to the Airport I happened to see the Cemetery from my vehicle and I stopped for a few minutes.
What I saw was another beautifully done cemetery by the Commonwealth Graves Commission. I had earlier seen beautifully done cemeteries at Kohima, Imphal and Guwahati.
This cemetery commemorates more than 1,600 Commonwealth fallen soldiers and a tribute to them. I could take some photographs. I wish I had time to explore it better. Maybe next time.

I first came across a war cemetery during my travels in Singapore and was moved by what I saw. It was only later that I came to know that my home city of Pune also had a war cemetery. Dedicated to the memory of the British and Indian soldiers who were killed during the 2nd World War, this cemetery is located in the cantonment area of Kirkee.
Located on the banks of the Mula river, this cemetery is maintained by the Commonwealth Graves Commission. The graves are well-maintained and so is the garden around it. The greenery gives a very peaceful aura to the place. There are numerous tombstones and engraved on the walls of the memorial here are the names of those who fell.
Unfortunately, most people are unaware of the significance of the place and pass by it without giving it a second look. Places such as this are a part of our heritage and similar efforts must be made in promoting it as a place to visit, as the efforts spent in its maintenance, which is quite good.
