Mahatma Phule Mandai (mandai means market in Marathi language) is situated in the old Shukrawar Peth area of Pune. This market is in the heart of the old Pune City. It is a colonial structure built by the British in 1886. It was earlier known as the Reay Market after the then Governor of Bombay, Lord Reay. It was later named as Mahatma Phule Mandai in honour of Pune's great social reformer Mahatma Jotiba Phule. The market building comprises of eight wings extending from the central structure having eight entry/exits. It was also used as the office of Pune Municipal Council till the mid 1960s with the General meetings conducted in the hall on the first floor.
Mahatma Phule Mandai, which houses hundreds of vegetable and fruit vendors, is the largest vegetable market in Pune. Its speciality is that all types of fresh quality vegetables and fruits are available here, round the year, at a very reasonable price. The market is very crowded on weekends, holidays and festivals. This beautiful 128 years old structure which has witnessed the history and progress of Pune, is a historical heritage landmark of the city today. The building is being renovated presently by the Pune Municipal Corporation.

Wide variety of vegetables and fruits in the Mahatma Phule Mandai.
Some say it's the biggest vegetable market in Pune City. The market is located next to Tulsi Baug. The market is always crowded because fruits and vegetable are available at lower cost than other places in the city, but not always - on Sundays and holidays it's comparable or even costlier.

The Mandai is one of the the original and oldest fruit and vegetable markets of Pune. The building is a beautiful 19th century structure and is one of the most iconic landmarks of the city. It is a hustling and bustling place where people from all walks of life congregate to buy fruit and vegetables at a good rate. The Mandai cha Ganapati is also very famous and is supposed to fulfill prayers of devotees.

In order to be fair I've to say that I went on 2 days countdown for DIWALI so It was so crowded that is impossible to describe.
If you're claustrophobic or you easily suffer panic attacks don't go there. Too many people, cars, motorbikes, children and mendicants (a few).
VERY difficult to park. I went there in the auto-rickshaw (Tuk-Tuks) which is seen as very unsafe. An it is of course! But you can't say you enjoined India if you didn't ride a Tuk-Tuk. It was fantastic! (for people like me, coming from South America, unsafe transportation is a kind of Karma)
So, as I was saying, this is an excellent market to buy spices unless you want also to get vegetables and fruits. No clothes there. Just for Gourmands. Several types of Masala, rare spices, chilis, dry vegetables and so. Packaging is ok to pass customs.
