- FVB06Vence, France2,224 contributionsA museum not to be missed - For me the #1 activity in PuneSightseeing is definitely the must-do activity in Pune. This museum has a great wealth of objects, and personally I found it as interesting if not more than the Prince of Wales in Mumbai. The museum is vast and the route is original and means that you never return to the same place The carved woods are of great splendor. But as we explore each room, we become more and more under its spell. Everything is well presented and highlighted. The part on musical instruments is also very beautiful; Fun: the entrance to the ladies' toilet is a magnificent carved door. Very originalVisited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 2, 2024
- Nidhi PPimpri-Chinchwad, India11 contributionsOne of my favourite places in the cityThis happens to be one of my favourite places to visit in the city. I generally go there for writing exercises when I have a writer's block and want to be inspired. Last year, I visited this place with an artist friend of mine and we spent the day writing and sketching throughout the museum. If you are going to visit with kids, make sure that they are in an age group where they are curious and can understand what is shown to them.Visited April 2023Traveled soloWritten March 17, 2024
- Meena MNew Delhi, India10 contributionsA morning well spentAn interesting, eclectic collection of artefacts housed in 2 wings of a building. I was short of time so could cover only one wing. Lovely local flavors that museums often overlook. Well worth a visit. Unfortunately space is short so artefacts are crowded into tight spaces, not well displayed, labelled & lighting is terrible. The collection deserves a well designed display and needs to be documented.Visited April 2024Traveled with friendsWritten April 29, 2024

- Bandya Mama52 contributionsMuseum is a treasure trove - Bandya MamaI recently visited the Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum, and it was an incredible experience! The museum houses thousands of fascinating artifacts spread across three floors. Some of the main attractions include beautiful potteries, antique mirrors, nut cutters, lamps, and exquisite textile items. The entry fee is ₹100 for Indians, with an additional optional ₹100 fee for mobile photography. You’ll need around 2 to 3 hours to fully explore and appreciate the collection. A must-visit for history and art enthusiasts!"Visited December 2024Traveled on businessWritten January 18, 2025

The area doesn't look huge. It's located in a narrow lane where parking is an issue. But forget all that. Once you step inside you'll discover a whole world of amazing idols, historic objects, ancient paintings, musical instruments and much much more. It closes at 5.30 pm and the ticket is Rs.60 for adults. We reached around 4.00 pm and had one hour time with us. We thought we'll easily see it all, but by 5.00 pm we realised we had to rush through the last 3 sections and needed 30 more minutes to fully see and appreciate the amazing collection by Raja Dinkar Kelkar. A must visit!

If you're on a visit to Pune, this is one of the best places for history buffs. Although this was a private collection of Raja Dinkar Kelkar, it was donated to government to make it into Museum.
You will find amazing works of art in storage, doors & war weapons used in ancient times in India, especially in the western parts of India (Maharashtra, Gujrarat & Kerala).
Each product made at that time, was filled with so much art that you wonder what are we doing now in the "plastic" world. We have lost so much of knowledge about making durable homes, utensils, clothes, musical instruments etc.

An immersive history lesson that threw light on how Indians of the subcontinent lived, loved, cooked, celebrated, decorated, clothed, housed, attacked, defended, travelled, prayed and performed. A history buff could easily spend 3 hours at the venue. More prominent direction signboards leading to the venue and dedicated parking space could help as would item
signboards with slightly more information. Also the museum shoppee could have more items reflective of Pune's rich culture and heritage.

From the outside, it appears to be a small museum but once inside there are multiple floors (Lift is also available). There are good artefacts at display and arrangement of these is as per international museums. The big deterrent is the parking which is not available adjacent to the museum and second is they accept only cash as the entry fees (Rs.80/-).

In 1962, when Dr. Kelkar delivered his deposits to the Department of Archaeology, Govt. of Maharashtra, it spawned into the proper body of a Regional Museum . This aided accurate exhibition and perfect sustenance of things. The air of eternal romance envelops the Raja Dinker Kelkar Museum, Pune. The stirring demonstration, in the Mastani Mahal, is reminiscent of the life of the valorous Bajirao Peshawa the first. It beautifully depicts the memorable moments of togetherness, shared by the Peshwa with his dear beloved, Mastani. A portion of the ground floor of the Raja Dinker Kelkar Museum has kept on display splendid Ivory articles, such as Ink-Pots, House-Shrines, Toilet-use things, Games and Playing Cards, named Ganjeefa. The 18th century, Parsee man, built of ivory, is a wonderful artifact from South India. Similar is the 17th century ivory model of Sree Ganesh , imported from 17th century Nepal. Variety is the hallmark of the Raja Dinker Kelkar Museum, Pune.

Surely a "must see" whenever you are in Pune. It got all you expect and more of what you wouldn’t expect in a museum. It’s amazing collection will keep you busy for at least an entire day. Interested in Indian history no matter from which angle? Go there!

The museum has an acute paucity of funds and thus has not been able to get professional help for display, interpretation, management, professional guide etc. It is one of the only museum worth mentioning in the city and a single man's collection.

This is a great museum, containing part of the life-time collection of just one man. There are lots of fascinating every-day items and house-hold objects, such as lamps, kitchen equipment, foot scrapers and paan making paraphanalia.
I thought the musical instrument section was particularly good, as well as the wonderful collection of carved doors.
The building itself is also a lovely old place and well worth 2 or 3 hours of your time.

A very nice museum in the heart of Pune. The collection is very impressive and as I was too understand only part of it is actually on display.
Items get a bit repetitive and display could do with a good revamp but otherwise a must see in Pune.

The footfall is not as much as it should be... But not crowed either. This is one mans' personal collection...so it's not like a fancy AC museum... but more like a walk through someones house.

Has the Kelkar museum moved to a new location or is it still at Natu baug?
