This place is located in the middle of the busiest place in Pune. It has very old trees and is a protected monument as per ASI. There are guards and ASI office located at its entrance and is very well maintained. It is clean and the temple can be accessed during day time only. The caves have been carved out of stone and give a good view of the entire complex. The place used to be visited by a local saint named Junglee Maharaj and there is a temple dedicated to him just adjacent to this cave temple.

1. Situated on busy JM Road, there is a Small underground temple that was supposedly built by Pandavas.
2. Like all temples dedicated to Shiva, there is a stately Nandi guarding the temple. Nandi is the sacred bull of the Hindu god Shiva.
3. On this festival of lights(Deepawali) the entire campus and temple is decorated with diyas or earthen lamps and looks simply stunning.
4. Massive banyan tree near the entrance of the place
5. This area was cut out of the rock around 1300 years ago
6. You will be thrilled to visit the Jangli Maharaj temple next door
7. The Pataleshwar caves temple is an 8th century monolith rock temple built by the Rashtrakuta Dynasty.
8. Patal is a Sanskrit word that means ‘underworld’ or ‘netherworld’ and eshwar means ‘God’.
9. The temple looks like a true beauty with all the finely crafted pillars, giant circular stones, and rotunda roof.

Had never imagined that a 1300 year old rock cut temple lies hidden along the busy JM road of Pune. Said to be the oldest structure in Pune, this temple lies below the level of the road and can be accessed directly or through steps behind the popular Jangli Maharaj Samadhi temple. It seemed quite popular among teenagers looking for a break from the heat. The garden at the entrance can do with some maintenance.
The circular structure popularly shown in the pictures of the place houses a huge Nandi idol while the main deity - a form of Shiva is in the cave opposite. The construction was abandoned half way as is evident from the lack of carvings within the caves even though one can see the markings left by the sculptors on the walls. Apart from the Pataleswar idol, there are idols for Ganapati, Parvati, Hanuman, Ram and Sita. The interiors were very clean and the atmosphere very peaceful and very cool being made of rock. While there were no priests around in the afternoon, active pooja is offered at the place.

This place is a hidden gem in Pune. This place is on Jangali Maharaj Road also called as JM road in Pune. We have to visit the Jangali Maharaj temole and then steps side form it to the caves. This place is crowded with people during afternoon and in summers as the rock caves provide cool surroundings.

In the heart of the city lies this ancient cave temple ...This architectural marvel is a rock cut temple..The serene atmosphere it provides makes it a great place..definitely must visit if you are travelling to Pune...

In between city hustle bustle, here is this cave. You cant imagine this place is within the city, in a most busy road
So if you are planning to go there. This cave is situated adjacent to JM corner and opposite xiaomi showroom. You will see one cycle repair shop just outside the cave entrance. There is no board outside, so just enter the park after few steps you will see a Nandi.
2 wheeler parking area is there.
Go early in the morning. It gets open at 0830am.

Visited this small temple complex last weekend. Although it's nothing particularly special, I was in the area to visit the adjacent Jangali Maharaj Temple. Since that temple was closed (at about 3pm on Sunday) rather than letting the effort go to waste I returned for a second visit to the Pataleshwar Cave Temple. I remain not particularly impressed with this place: it's really nothing compared with Ellora or Ajanta, or even Elephanta Island in Mumbai. But it does have the advantage of being centrally located in Pune city and, I suppose, if you haven't seen such temple before it might be of some interest.

Ended up there while my husband was having a business meet on JM Road.
Peaceful, clean and interesting. Probably the oldest attraction of Pune yet many locals didn't know about it. It's worth a short visit on the way to FC road or else.

The Pataleshwar Cave Temple is situated in Junglee Maharaj Road within the main city of Pune and is adjacent to the Junglee Maharaj Temple.It is below the ground level and has been hewn from a single (?) rock . There are number of caves inside which are interconnected to each other ,sculpted figures of gods and goddesses(?) in damaged condition are still visible on the walls of these caves.Unfortunately, there is no sign board at the site to inform the visitors of the details of these caves and the place could have been better managed by the authorities. Local legend states that Pandavas while travelling incognito had stayed in this place for a night and had carved the sculptures(??).

Its a heritage site in the Heart of the Pune city, Right next to the Jangli Maharaj Temple on JM Road.
The good thing is that the govt had started restoring the caves now and probably in the next few months it will turn out to be nice.
Tip:
Make a visit,as it hardly takes 20 mins to see it.

it is under ASI care so works like any Central Government Office except the fact that it is open even on Saturdays and Sundays! But honestly, an appeal to all...don't make it a picnic spot and eat your boxed food here. maintain the sanctity of this place.
