These caves are a lot smaller than Ellora and Ajanta but nevertheless worth a visit. Not only the great artistry but also the beautiful landscape and quiet atmosphere (only in the morning) were appealing. As it is located a little outside of Aurangabad you'll need to get ride. Therefore I'd recommend Ifran Shaikh and his nice little Riksha who gave us a safe and comfortable ride not only to the caves but to sights in Aurangabad as well (+919970928246)

We did not expect to find such an interesting object at this address. Specifically, these are a series of cave temples that were built in the second half of the first millennium AD. were created here by Buddhist monks. Due to their proximity to their counterparts in Ellora and Ajanta, these properties are somewhat undervalued, but you should take your time here - they are worth it. It's best to let these images work their magic on you and stop often.
The big advantage of this facility is that you can easily combine cultural assets with a wonderful walk with views of the surroundings of Aurangabad.
It is also very pleasing that this property is apparently not on the bus tourist route. That's why there are no short-haired people here who often communicate loudly and look for places to take selfies.

The visit is well worth it - don't overlook these cellars
It is neither the magnificence of Ajanta or Ellora, but it is a very beautiful and pleasant discovery
There are around a hundred very easy steps spread over approximately 300 m. We gradually discover the view of Aurangabad and the Mini Taj. There are few visitors
The cellars are divided into 2 groups and both groups are interesting, even if here and there there is an uncompleted cellar.
Some cellars are suspected of having been started in the 1st century, although the majority date from the 6th-8th century.
The entrance is always very austere, but as soon as you enter, the beauty of the sculptures stands out. All this dug into the mountain and in great darkness.

Aurangabad caves are located in the city of Aurangabad and are much smaller in number, size as well as popularity when compared to either Ellora or Ajanta caves. The caves are quiet easily accessible from Aurangabad city. The caves are cut from the rock on the face of the hill and are located at height. There is a flight of stairs from the base of the hill to the caves, which can be comfortably negotiated. The caves are being looked after by Archaeological Survey of India and the entrance to the caves is chargeable. The ticket counter is located, half way up the stairs.
Visitors also should note that there are two routes by which caves can be accessed. The formal route reaches the base of the flight of stairs and the informal, partly mud road directly goes up to ticket counter.
The caves are less frequented by the tourists. However, time permitting, they are worth a visit.

The Aurangabad caves are the most difficult caves among the caves at Ajanta and Ellora. You have to climb a stiff staircase to first reach the ticket counter. Though there is a road also leading to the same place, we were unable to find the starting point of the road. There are two separate sites. So keep your ticket with you till the end. Carry enough water with you. There is also a cooler near the ticket counter. The ticket price is Rs. 25 per person. As the two sites are 1 km apart, we visited only one side. The caves are above the ticket counter, and you need stamina to climb the hill to see all of them. It is on the outskirts of the city, and not many visitors are found here.

Although there are many options to visit both caves in price and convenience l thought l might highlight a very easy and cost effective way to visit both caves without all the confusion. Both caves are in different locations, Elora caves around 30kms (19 miles) from town and Ajunta around 100kms (68 miles) from town. Contrary to what is advertised in some brochures it is not possible to do both caves in one day. For us in our late 50's, the easiest and most cost effective way
was to visit the Ajunta cave site was to simply head to the Aurangabad Central bus station a day before , any ricksaw driver knows where it is , walk in and go to the pre book office (the locals are only too kind to direct you) and book a ticket to Ajunta caves 690 rp per person return trip on a volvo airconditioned
bus, it leaves at 8.30 am everyday except mondays arriving at 11am and leaves the caves at 2.30pm arriving back at the bus station at around 5. 3.5 hrs at Ajunta for was sufficient for us to see most of the caves especially the important caves 1,2 ,9,10,16,17 and 26. Just a note, currently there are alot of roadworks beng done on the Ajunta caves road and the trip is real bumpy. Elora caves we found more interesting especiall cave 16, we just hired a rickshaw driver from out front of Central bus station the day we pre booked our Ajunta tickets and for 800rp total to take us to Elora , he waited for as long as we liked and brought us back, certainly much cheaper than any tours. Dont forget to haggle a bit if you need to after all its India. The drive there in a rickshaw was surprisingly quick and comfortable. Just be aware there are entry fees at each site of 600rp per person. Hope this helps.

These caves are near to Bibi ka makbara.
Most of these caves were Buddhist vihars in 800AD. They have many statutes of Buddha and the influence of Hinduism on Buddhism can be clearly observed through Ganesha, and Laxmi sculptures...in side the caves. These caves are not known much,as they are overshadowed by Ajanta and Ellora. The connecting road is good but the caves are not lit from insdevthats why the entry is restricted after 5pm.

a really calm place to go early mornings of evenings, green surroundings make it refreshing ,though the caves r not v gud as compared to ellora but the walk up the staris in the beautifull surroundings is worth it. a small water fall in front of cave worth enjoying only when it is raining.

Hi, I visited Aurangabad, Shirdi, Shani shignapur, mahabaleshwar, Bhimashankar and pune in month of june, trip was for one week and around 1200 Km to cover sai samadhi, shani temple, 3 jyotirlings, ellora and some site scenes. I have taken Tavera taxi for 7 people from Mr M.D Hussain, I got quotation from at least 3 other vendors, but Mr Hussain provided me around 20% cheaper rate than next best alternative, Taxi was very good, driven was polite, aware of all places and always ready, even taxi run around 60 Km more than my planned trip but he did not ask extra payment for it and also he didn't count the money that I have given to him. Mr Hussain is a good person by heart and nature. Hussain alternately called me to check all things going good. His contact no is +918855835494, +919923616671.
If you ale planning for any trip to Aurangabad then my advise is to try Mr. Hussain service for travelling around Aurangabad.

I am 73 years old. I walk for 50 minutes every day. How difficult it is to climb 350 odd steps. Is there any other mode of going up besides walking
Written December 20, 2018
If you can walk 50 minutes a day and have no knee pains, you should be able to do it. The steps at Aurangabad caves are steep, it will not be a cakewalk but very doable. If you own a hiking stick, do take it along. Gives good support especially for the journey down. Climb at your own pace taking breaks frequently.

Hi Chandra,
I saw your comment on Ajanta and Ellora tour. I intend to visit them in February, I am interested in doing the visit with a guide, have you a recommandation ?
Thanks, Guy

My husband and I visited Ellora and Ajanta caves in October 2017. The Ellora Caves are an hour and Ajanta are two hours away from Aurangabad by car. We had arranged car and guides before we left Australia with an excellent Tour company in Mumbai. Highly recommend you (google) contact Abbas at India Someday, the company is very well run and Abbas will go out of his way to deliver for you. Prices are very good and wont break the budget! Enjoy, you are in for a fabulous time.

I think u have traveled this circuit well. I shall go to see Ajanta, Ellora & other sights nearby, Shirdi & Mumbai. Can u tell me how to travel these & accommodations at these places.
Written December 1, 2017
please allocate a full day for Ajanta.
Accommodation in Ajanta is best at MTDC Fardapur (if you have your own vehicle) - Fardapur has a canteen of its own , Another MTDC which is nearer to the caves parking slot is Ajanta T junction , but lack of canteen facility might be a problem , however eating nearby wont be much of an issue. So for convenience choose T-junction.Bookings can be made thru MTDC online booking. Make sure that you consider Monday close for Ajanta.
Ellora specially the Kailash temple (Kailashe Kelenkari) will charm you the most .Ellora is closed on Tuesdays(plz check it out). Other main sites Daulatabad fort , (trekking involved about 1000 steps)will rinse you out , we avoided(best photography post lunch) . plz attempt a silhouette session at the Biwi ka Maqbara and return to Hotel.
Best plan, from Kolkata choose Sai Express (weekly) to shirdi directly. Rest the night I would advice MTDC again , otherwise Hotel Saiesh , 100 mts within Sai baba's mandir. plz choose an early slot for darshan , you may register and book at online sai org in , do not attempt accommodation there , deposit your camera and mobiles at counters outside the mandir. On a normal day , darshan might take 3-4 hrs complete , including shopping. Move out by evening to Aurangabad . It is nothing wrong if you reach the T-junction Ajinta , by 8.00 pm. Rest for the night.
Next day attempt ajanta , rest the night at ajanta, Next day morning get off to Ellora - Ghirineshwar mandir- daulatabad - Miwi ka Maqbara - Aurangabad Hotel (Panchavati a cheap option).
Next day take Shivneri (Volvo AC) to Mumbai , else plan your train journey accordingly...
Happy Journey.....
If you are adventuring and like the monsoons then do not forget to visit between 15th August & Vishwakarma Puja...Greenery in Maharashtra with loads of "jharnas" is worth enjoying and you will experience a different canvas altogether.
