We visited Khajurao a couple of days ago and I was simply blown away by the beauty of the 1000 to 800 year stone temples.
This is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is meticulously maintained by the Archeological Survey of India. The exterior and interior carvings are simply stunning and as beautiful as described in guide books. We had a very knowledgeable guide named Sanjay Khare. +919425143587.
I'd reccomend a stop over at this amazing place if you have time on an India trip.

I followed the suggested route and this was the first of the Khajuraho temples that contained the famous erotic sculptures. The temple is dedicated to the four head form of Lord Vishnu, Vaikuntha Chaturmurti. Which was a bit strange because the idol of Vishnu in the sanctum only had three heads.
This temple sits on an elevated platform as do all of the temples in the complex. The outer walls of the temple are richly decorated with the aforementioned sculptures, but also many dedicated to the subject of other Hindu gods including Vaikuntha Chaturmurti, Ganesh and scenes from Hindu myths. One of the best temples to see in the complex and one I recommend making time for.

This is another temple in this western group of Khajuraho temples. You must have a guide to make the most of this UNESCO site.
The outstanding and intricate sculptures depict everyday life. This is one of two temples where one section where the sculptures are erotic and it is said these were the inspiration for the Karma Sutra.
The temple is set in a pleasant parkland setting and near other temples.
If you are in Khajuraho you have probably come to see the temples. I recommend them.

Lakshmana Temple, Khajuraho. The Lakshmana Temple is a 10th-century Hindu Rajput temple built by Yashovarman located in Khajuraho, India. Dedicated to Vaikuntha Vishnu - an aspect of Vishnu. A great experience.

If you like erotic pictures this is the temple for you. There are lots of figures all around the temple performing various acts with sexual content. Other scenes show people in all sorts of everyday acitivities. You can enter the interior via rather steep stairs and walk around the main altar within. This is one of best temples in the area.

This is the second largest temple in the western group of Khajuraho temples. It has a series of superb carvings on it's walls, each more beautiful than the other. A sense of timelessness envelops you as look at smiling maidens and naughty lovers caught in stone a 1000 years ago. The detailing of their garments, pose and expressions is breathtaking. A place to soak in history and mythology.

All of the temples in this area must be visited, if you are anywhere close by. I recommend spending at least one full day here. The shops in town will definitely bargain, and all is within easy walking distance.

Excellent work of sculpturists more than 1000 years back (950-1000 AD). Constructed by King Lakshman Barman. Interestingly these temples show sex freedom in those days enjoyed by royal couples in the presence of other girls. Polygamy and Bestiality acts are also shown by the craftsmen. Probably, Kapsutra was well practised in India, before the western world adopted it. However, I am still not convinced (even though my guide gave a couple of theories), that why such acts were depicted in the temples, which are places of worship. These monuments are now UNESCO conserved. These temples and horticulture around are well maintained. Worth seeing.

The Lakshamana Temple at Khajuraho is yet another exemplary monument. As the Khandariya Mahadeva Temple, this too has some depictions of sex poses. The two have often been related to the Kamasutra, the ancient Sanskrit Sex Guide. But I didn't find that the the postures here are modeled as per the Kamasutra. The guides will tell you that these were chiseled so that people don't become monks. However, the object could have been better achieved by keeping the depictions sensuous rather than erotic. There are indeed more sculptures with sensuality than those with eroticism. So, I fail to understand the existence of erotic designs on the temple walls. But, then most of the visitors are here because of this.

No. you can not walk between all the temples as they are far away. They charge nominal entrance fee. But it's recommended to take a guide who will explain all the details.
