Varkala is perhaps the best place Thiruvananthapuram to spend an enchanting evenings. Calm sea (from October to February), clean and spacious beach, peaceful surroundings and majestic sunset. Children will enjoy playing around. Excellent options for dining as well, especially for fish varieties. Week days are better as weekends and holidays witness heavy local crowd.

A nice get away from the daily grind, time at this beach can be a great rejuvenator. A beach considered safe for wading in, for a swim. The water and the beach is pretty much clean and a great place to unwind and to get some Sun. Not too crowded, towards the last quarter of the year, it was possible to get some space for oneself just to take in the beauty and hear the soothing sound of the waves. In the early mornings, near the south end entrance to the beach from the beach road, it is a common sight to see groups of devotees offering prayers and performing rituals to propitiate the spirit of their ancestors and the priests-in-waiting canvassing for clients amongst visitors to the beach. Overall a delightful and refreshing experience.

one of the must visit place if you are visiting kerela, the beaches are so clean with crystal clear water. The best time to visit here is the sunset when you can enjoy a nice view . If you want to stay also in varkala there are many option available on the cliff for staying and loads of cafe are there on the cliff where you get nice food , also in the evening you will see stall of sea food also which you can enjoy. Apart from the cafe on the cliff there is a huge market for shopping purpose.

We stayed on the south cliffs above the beach. It was a long trek down the stairs to the beach but pretty much worth it. The water is clear and warm. No dangerous currents to speak of. It was better in the mornings when it was calm. Often the wind came up in the afternoon and the waves became a little to big and chaotic for comfort. You can rent a beach umbrella for about 200 rupees which is worth it since there is very little shade. A nice experience.

If you love beaches, you should definitely visit Varkala beach. The main attraction here is the cliff. It's very easy to reach here. Varkala Sivagiri railway station is within two kilometers range and bus services are available to here. And also it's an easy access from National Highway 66.

Super clean and relaxed vibe. Can have fresh pineapple and coconut right on the beach for an unbeatable price. Chairs and umbrellas for rent also well priced and not overly crowded. Great spot for swimming!

Varkala to me is a very nice place to relax, eat good food and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere.
From October/November until around March, the beach is great - especially if you like to play in the waves, and the weather is nice and sunny. Warm? Yes! I would say around +30C more or less 24/7. Great when the heat is combined with a nice breeze from the sea!
This year the beach was not very crowded, so there is lots of space for you and your family. The beach has life guards - feels safe.
See you in Varkala!

Really nice beach with an amazing cliff where you can relax i the chaotic India. There are lots of people, but since it is a very large beach you can walk 15 to 20 minutes and be alone (something very difficult in India). There are also lots of options to have breakfast/dinner
If you are looking for party this is not the place.

מקום חביב עם חנויות ומסעדות טובות. בערב נחמד יותר. מקום נגיש לתחבורה הציבורית של הריקשות ה"תוק תוק". למי שנמאס אוכל מקומי , זה המקום.
Lovely place with good shops and restaurants. It is nicer to walk in the evening. Accessible place for public transportation of the "Tuk Tuk" rickshaws. For those who are fed up with local food, this is the place.

The sea is really rough during this time and its not advisable to go deep. But if u want to enjoy varkala during monsoons there are other ways also.

We are here now, it is hot so you will want to avoid walking a lot during the day. If you have a scooter it wont be as bad. Bear in mind most of the shops and restaurants on the cliff are now closed.

Yes you can take ola rental which will take you to Varkala and come back, best would be you can hire any other taxi but if you need branded you can try Ola with no hassles.

Olga, we had a private driver so not really able to advise - we flew into Trivandrum which I think is closer to Varkala than Kochi however Fort Kochin is a great place to visit if you've the time. As Tripadvisor will not allow links to html or website links, recommend you search india rail information for train/bus/transport information from Trivandrum to Varkala or Kochi to Varkala. Sorry cannot help you more.

Hi, I want to take my father who is 68 years old to Varkala. Is it really tough to reach the beach? Do we need to go through the stairs? How is Varkala overall for elderly people. He just want to sit and enjoy the see view. Awaiting some quick response as I need to do the bookings. Based on the response I will decide whether to choose Varkala or not.
Many thanks,
Dipak

HI there, the beach depending on the tide is accessible for the elderly via stairs to the black sand where there are lounging chairs there for rent each day to hire for your father to watch the sea, best down the left hand end of the beach close to the lighthouse end.
