I shall miss this now I am home. Such a lovely beach. Hopefully they will try a little harder to keep it clean. We did notice Europeans doing a beach tidy which they do once a week. Lets hope the locals realise how important it...More

Lovely clean beach with opportunity to hire surf and body boards, for 200 and 300 rupees respectively. The beach is surrounded by cliffs so you walk down a few flights of steps to reach. It's worth noting there are no beach bars/ restaurants on the...More

After being disappointed with Kovalam we were pleasantly surprised to find Varkala, with its pretty beach, heaps of restaurants and shops and chilled vibe.

Its one of the rare beaches in India where one can enjoy the beauty of hills and beach as well. There are 2 beaches in Varkala. The North Cliff Beach is less frequented by travelers where as the papanasam beach is having larger footfall. The...More

The mid mornings to afternoons (11am -4pm) the beach areas are quite hot so go prepared. The good thing is the beaches aren't very crowded and the evenings are pleasant.

I think one can arrange private fishing boats, but it might not be so simple and it would also depend on the weather

Varkala or Kovalam (6 Replies)
Hi, I am planning for a honeymoon trip to Kerala, I am in a fix on choosing between Varkala beach or Kovalam beach to include in my trip. Can anyone suggest which beach is better. I will be staying for a day & night in the last week of Feb. And it would be great if you can also suggest good beach resorts in the beach you would suggest. Since its my honeymoon, I have my budget a little high. Thanks, Srujan

Hi Srujan, The distance between Varkala and Kovalam is just about 1 hour and you hit Varkala first, when traveling from Cochin/Alleppey/Kumarakom etc. Kovalam is relatively older beach, with maximum number of resorts and hence quite crowded with both tourists, merchants, locals etc. Varkala is relativey new and hence not too exploited. Travel on Sunday (8 Replies)
I've booked accommodation at Fort Kochi and woul plan to go to Allapey on a Sunday, and later from Varkala beach to Trivandrum on a Sunday. Now I'm wondering if I might struggle with acquiring any form of transport. Does transport availability become less on Sunday's? This is in February. Thanks
